No Gabriel, Hackett and/or Phillips.....No Genesis.
They should had changed the name to The Phil Collins Band, any person who didn't started with ABACAB knows that Genesis is really two bands....One Prog and adventurous, the other popular and IMHO mediocre.
I don't care what Genesis did in the 80's and 90's, that's another band. But the merit of their first 10 albums (I include the melodical FGTTR), is not affected for what Collins and his pals did.
I remember when people said that Genesis was in R&R Hall of fame because Collins...Well, the only member of Genesis with a solo place in the Hall is Peter Gabriel, despíte all the loud voices of the Pop Genesis fans.....And heard rumors of Steve Hackett being inducted very soon.
Iván
PS: Rolling Stones also recognized Pink Floyd...That doesn't make them less.
The magazine normally is crap, but sometimes they hit the nail in the head

Your comments regarding Genesis seem frightfully accurate to me. The thing about King Crimson is they never had very good tunes did they? On the magazine front, try PROG magazine, it's excellent.

sorry dude.. you'd be up against Ivan... and I wouldn't put a dime on you or anyone but myself against Ivan and I have no dog in this one. I like King Crimson about as much as Genesis... at least King Crimson did something worthy of the adoration they get

No old friend.
I'm became wise enough to know that no matter what people say, the music of Genesis won't change.

Actually, it's a good topic for a separate discussion: when we rate a band, should we look at their entire body of work, or only consider their top pieces. made in their peak era by their best line-up(s)? Neither would be unfair, but the results can be dramatically different. Pink Floyd had the Barrett period, the Waters-Gilmour period, the Waters + linemen period, and the Watersless Gilmour-Mason period. Then there is Yes proper vs. Buggles-Yes. There is pre-Bruford KC, the 1973-1974 KC, the Belew KC + the Projekcts, and the consequent variations thereof with Levine, Harrison etc. Initially, PT wasn't even a band, and the 1990's PT were not the same as the 2000's PT.
Ivan_Melgar_M wrote:
PS: Rolling Stones also recognized Pink Floyd...That doesn't make them less. | Of course not. It simply indicates a higher degree of mainstream recognition. Some bands, like Supertramp and Genesis, embraced this opportunity and morphed into pop bands. PF didn't, IMO, although many feel that post-Waters PF is as pop as it gets. Opinions differ.
Roxbrough wrote:

I classify the Bruford-era KC as progressive jazz, which follows different melody-making philosophy than symphonic (Genesis) or space/psychodelic (PF) music.

Ivan, the point that I'm trying to get across is Genesis did not end well. You're acting like they were the Beatles who walked out on a high note. I don't care about what would happen if they tried now in the year 2015, the point is they didn't and they 99% chance won't because they don't have it in them anymore. King Crimson on the other hand has been interesting since 1981. You can argue classic Genesis from Trespass to Wuthering is better than classic Crimson from Court to Red, but you could also argue the reverse. |
In fact, Beatles reaped the harvest of their early pop successes to gradually get more and more experimental. I don't know of any 70s prog rock band that did something equivalent to that. To be fair to them, they (the big ones) were already accepted as prog by the mainstream and trouble began when the popularity of prog began to wane. From among the bands/artists listed on this website, I can readily think of Talk Talk and Radiohead as examples of bands which began to gamble AFTER tasting initial commercial success. I doubt there are a lot many others.

Why, everytime i see a post from you, I have to see a man's ass and a naked woman? (this last part is ok but.. have some decency xD)
(btw both bands are legendary.. if there wasn't for KC there'd be no Nirvana, therefore no tons of other bands and the same with Genesis)
