So I found out (surprised I hadn't heard of this until now) why people around here have all the DT hate - it's jealousy, man! You just can't stand that they have THE (FACTUALLY) Greatest Drummer alive!
(Queue the "well so and so is more 'tasteful'" comment bs, heh heh) Current record: Former record: And an awesome breakdown: |

I love DT , but prefer Portnoy!!!
And my favourite bit of drumming - listen to Alan White - Live on Yesshows - gates of delerium (especially the musical break.battle section) - nobody could have drummed that better...listen to it and if you like drumming YOU'LL LOVE THAT....

Interesting that you equate speed with greatness.

Dude...I wasn't born yesterday. I have heard many, many versions of "Gates of Delirium", and yes, I do consider it one of the greatest prog compositions. By the way - while I do personally think Mangini is the greatest drummer alive (after seeing him live and having to reattach my jaw many times throughout the show), there is some tongue in cheek and teasing going on here. Hence the winkity winks. |

Nah, music should be in 4/4 all the time and never do anything interesting or unusual.... |

Because music is purely analytical.

Because music should be painfully repetitive.... |

Good idea. There's no reasoning with people who think music is about technique and nothing else. |

Haha, that's what the whole above conversation is! I'm enjoying it, personally. I have ceased to care - see the "Raters Who Suck" thread: I had a catharsis when I realized that NO ONE is reasonable when it comes to music, and the only thing anyone here is doing is stating how much they enjoy a piece of music or not. Oh, people pretend it's more than that, but if you really think about it (I mean, in the sense of not trying to prove what your gut came up with through your head), you'll realize that measuring enjoyment is the only thing ANYONE can do when it comes to music. Now, I do with people thought more about WHY they enjoyed or didn't enjoy music more, as when I have done this it's often changed what I enjoyed or didn't enjoy.... |

OK...so, I can start calling groups "The Beetles", "Lead Zeppelin", and "Leonard Skynard"? |

Dream Theater are a very popular rock band. Their fans are great in number. Their drummer has strong skills on his instrument. They make lots of albums.
