Ok, maybe I'm a newbie here, but I love these kind of posts!
Especially when it comes to one of my most beloved bands...
Unfortunately I can't put up a poll, so if anyone wants to answer to this post he/she must write it here.
Soooo...
What is your most beloved album by Genesis?
You can just simply write the name, or if you want you can write why is your most beloved one.
Your choice! Wink

And since I started this, I should write first, right?
It is very hard for me to choose, especially between Nurcery Cryme and Selling England by the Pound.
I will 'vote' for Nurcery Cryme, but not lighthearted! Confused
I'm really very curious to see your opinions on that... Wink
If anybody wants please visit: http://www.gfreedomathina.blogspot.com/

This is my Blog mostly about Rock music, but also a few other things as well.

You are most welcome!

Thank you. :)

From the Gabriel-era Genesis: Nursery Cryme
From the Collins-era Genesis: Wind & Wuthering

Taking "most beloved" to mean "least loathed," Wind and Wuthering.

Gabriel era: Foxtrot
Post Gabriel era: A Trick of the Tail.

To be honest I don't think they put a foot wrong between 1970 - 1980.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Gabriel Era -- Selling England
Post-Gabe Hackett era -- Trick of the Tail
Full-on Phil Era -- Abacab

I actually like all of their albums except Calling all Barfbags though.

No, that can't be it.  Mass brainwashing seems more plausible.

My favourite Gabriel era album has always been Nursery Cryme. It is, to me, the epitome of that unique style of English pastoral rock that I fell in love with so many years ago.

Favourite quartet album is ATOTT - an incredible album in the wake of such a devastating loss.

As for the trio era, I love them all, but Duke, to me, ranks as one of the finest albums ever made.

Sounds about right.

In all seriousness, what I hear is two great tracks ("Eleventh Earl of Mar", "Blood on the Rooftops"), a mighty boring "epic" without a single interesting melody and a serious lack of dynamics ("One for the Vine"), two weak ballads that could have been something with a bit of work ("Your Own Special Way", "Afterglow"), a "Robbery"-ish song with a melody I don't enjoy and a poor performance by Collins on vocals ("All in a Mouse's Night") and three instrumentals that range from okay to sleep-inducing. It's not a terrible album, but I don't see what the fuss is about.

Peter G era: Trespass
Four man era: Trick of the Tail (Can't stand side one of W&W, and I just don't like Phil's voice on it)
Three man era: Duke but We Can't Dance is a very close second.

I re-listened to 'invisible touch' and I must confess it's not bad at all.

I think every song on Wind & Wuthering was fantastic. The musicianship is solid and their hearts are into it. This is just not some pop band going through the motions like so much of their later output represents to me, but rather like they were still like they were in the beginning as Hackett describes them "a songwriters collective." To those that don't like the album, then nobody can convince you of it's merits, but for those that love this album, they know why they love it and this kind of bond just isn't shared by all Genesis fans. These are the people I enjoy talking to, because they know how special the album is not only for the departure of Hackett, but kind of a memoriam for a magical time in these musician's lives. There is something so somber and mournful about this album. And all of this came to final fruition on Seconds Out.

And that's fine. The fact that I don't understand why people like Wind & Wuthering doesn't mean there are no legitimate reasons to enjoy it.

What is that supposed to mean? Do pop bands generally go through the motions while prog bands don't?

Pop bands are a lot more guilty of it than prog bands. It means that they're just in it for the money instead of making an artistic statement. Not all pop bands are guilty of this, but pop music is generally aimed at the lowest common denominator. This said, I do like some pop music and it's not that I'm totally against it, I just don't think highly of it compared to prog bands. Even prog bands make pop songs and I think more highly of them than a band whose sole purpose is commercial appeal.
