Topic: New feature: Quick Rating Posted: November 09 2010 at 15:01 |
Hello fellow proggers !
Today we decided to implement a feature to the site that I was very looking forward to.
That feature is the Quick Rating (aka QR) of albums from mostly everywhere on the site. When logged in, members can easily star rate any albums where we added the QR widget. Just mouse over, and click the grey/red stars to add or update your rating. This widget allows you to know how you rated the album, and can update your rating anytime. Nice !
There is 2 concerns that I will discuss now.
1. Since we will add more and more ratings only to the site, reviewers take note that I have also increase the weight of review rating from 5 to 10x for members, 10 to 20x for admins and collaborators. Understand that we still value more detailled reviews over rating only. But I encourage members to quick rate to increase the overall value of the site top lists and average ratings to help discover the best prog out there from reviews or by checking average ratings or top lists. The algorithm that order top albums lists also take into consideration the other albums number of ratings, so it's a win-win option here. Warning: this will change the top albums list for sure, I think J-Tull TaaB is back #1 !
2. About converting a rating only to a review, this feature will be implemented in the next days/weeks and be available in your member reviews profile page. We want to allow conversion of quick ratings to review to be published on the homepage as regular new review. We will update this thread once available.
Please surf around to find the widget and start rating more - this will improve in the long run, the value of average ratings of albums , top albums list too. We will add this widget in other pages in the next days. Stay tuned.
Please report any issues and comments here for now.

I've tested it and it seems to be working perfectly EDIT: seems like I spoke to fast, when I click on "see all reviews/rating" for an album I get a "script timed out" error.

Or was I mistaken?

I have been having loading errors though most of October and November and just before the change was implemented I could not get in the site.
So that you know.
This will be an interesting change indeed, but let me put this sugestion here: Why don't you put two different ratings? One being the collab/admin/reviewer/member rating and the other being the quickrating you just implemented.

Yeah, I thought it was 1/5/10 as well. I personally don't see the quick rating having a significant impact on the number of ratings given, but I don't mind downgrading the weight of a rating only because they are pretty worthless to the random browser.

It's the same rating, I don't see how the method makes any difference at all. That would also defeat the purpose completely, because it would force members to go to the individual album page to give a rating that actually matters and they wouldn't bother to give any more ratings if they have to to the same amount of trouble that they do now.

Indeed, for member's review-rating, the weight is 10x (from 5).

Ah, that's ok then. It's interesting how the top lists have been reshuffled, but they're probably a more accurate representation now: I've typically never heard of any of the people who have given ratings only.

Is this why the site was down earlier?

Ah. I was wondering why the Top 250 list was so different.

It's certainly interesting. I won't be using rating so much (mostly) because of one certain reason. When I rate something and then for example one month later I want to write review for it, I cannot do so on album's page, but the only way how to write the review then is in my reviewer page - http://www.progarchives.com/ReviewerPage.asp
EDIT: So far, so if it will be implemented in a nice way, it will be a great thing Max Changing weight of ratings is a logical step (I think I also suggested this in past :-) ) and haven't messed up charts so much. We'll see guys.

I've just quick rated a load of albums and I feel a bit dirty now. First time I ever rated without reviewing. Is there any way I can unrate them?

^ I would like to rate a little bit, but I'm not sure if (after some things will be implemented) I'll get my rating => review to the main page.
For past ratings-only I mean.

You can change it by clicking it anywhere again. M@X did say so above.
