Hmm.....should I make this poll or should I let Alex do it....meh, he's a little slow on the uptake, so I guess I have to pick up for him.Wink Anyway, we're at the end of Round 1 and the start of Round 2, and we're kicking things off with an apples and oranges poll, where we have the return of the masters and founders of neo-prog against Italian fusion band Area. Which one will triumph? That is for all of you to decide.

Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages.

Marillion's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=233
Area's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=26

And at the risk of sounding like a broken record, please feel more than free to discuss both bands.

Recap:

A2:  Gong v. Area    (18-19)

Unlike Area vs. Gong, and like Mahavishnu Orchestra vs. Marillion, this is a no-brainer for me.  Area appeals much more to my tastes -- fantastic band.  I tend to prefer jazz-rock to melodic rock.  Area beats Arena too.

EDIT: Incidentally, it's interesting that both times Marillion was put up against a jazz-rock band.  Considering that many consider Mahavishnu Orchestra to be THE Prog Jazz-Rock Fusion band, and it lost to Marillion, it does not bode well for the lesser-known Area in this poll.

Won't vote, since I don't listen to either, but I just want to say, "Camel got beat that badly?"

Area, comfortably. Much fonder of Demetrio Stratos' half-yodelling and the crazy sax lines than Marillion's style.

Wow, wow, wow....

Could've never imagined that Area would be so popular anywhere.... More than Gong!!!

Anyway I go for Marillion, by quite a distance.

Marillion - either with Fish or Hogarth.

From what I've heard from Area, it seems it's not the band for me. Still, I have strong negative feelings toward Marillion (know more than ever since it beat MO, I suppose) and I had to vote for Area. I don't wish to agitate any Marillion fans, but it has to be said sooner or later: Misplaced Childhood strikes me as the worst prog album I've ever heard! That is the magnitude of my disliking and believe me, I'm not just saying that because of the MO thingy Smile.

Marillion. I've been listening to their early albums with Fish and I'm loving them all.

By the way, who won the first PA battle to stardom?

At that time, it had a different name which escapes me. The final round was KC barely edging out Yes by something like 63-60 or somewhere around there.

I hardly stand Marillion and can't get into Area.
So voted for Area.

Marillion's in the lead. How unprogressive is that? They're just a stadium band that can't fill stadiums. Area's high art.

But don't believe in me

Oh, I was actually going to ask about this after noticing not seeing KC......this time around are you using only bands that weren't in the first one?

I really have to ask why....though i'm sure you've argued the point tens of times already.

Marillion.

On basis of Fish era - don't listen to them so much nowadays and not really been inspired by one of their recent albums (exception:Brave).

Like Area, but am relatively new to them.

Two excellent bands!

I went with Area, based on the strength of Crac! and their debut!

RIO/AVANT/ZEUHL - The best thing you can get with yer pants on!
