I'm sure I left out many bands that deserves the privilege to be among the list, but I limit it to my ten favorites. About the mispell, english is not my first languange, and I apologised previously. I hope that you people can be tollerant with my errors...

I think you'll find there's an 'r' in virtuosic, Reed.

Just a bit of fun, buddyEmbarrassed

Might be an idea to select a country from "your location" in the Profile Editor.

Back to the poll. I think that, musician by musician, Yes (the Fragile Yes) has the best line-up, the best man in every instrument. Ok, maybe no the very best, but the aggregation of performers was the best, in my humble opinion.

I'd go for King Crimson circa Lark's Tongues In Aspic (off this list) - it's a shame that no good quality live recordings exist with Jamie Muir on percussion. All 5 musicians were remarkable players at the top of their form, and the interplay between them seemed telepathic. Outside of the list, I'd go for Magma circa MDK/Kontharkhosz.

Hard poll, lets see not counting miscelaneous instruments not common in all bands like flute, violin, etc.:

Best Keyboardist: Rick Wakeman Yes (1)

Best drummer: Bill Bruford - Yes (2) King Crimson (1)

Best Guitar Player: Steve Hackett - Genesis (1)

Best Vocalist: Peter Gabriel -  Genesis (2)

Best Bass Player: Tony Levin King Crimson (2)

So IMO is a tie between Genesis, Yes and King Crimson.

To untie I would chose the best lyricist and it goes for Peter Gabriel - Genesis (3)

My vote goes for Genesis.

Iván

Oh yeah? - Well just imagine this - Red era King Crimson (Fripp, Wetton, Bruford) and Rush are in the same pub. If Geddy Lee spilled John Wetton's pint, Wetton would deck him  before he could get his hands out of his pockets, so there!

Rush Cannot be considered, coz no key-wizzard leaves them a tad short, unless Reed is sugesting that Lee is better than wakeman on his oberheim ???

I tried to be dispassionate, and consider only in terms of ability. I nearly voted for (the original) Asia but discounted them because a) they're a band of prog musicians but play little prog, and b) because I don't think Goeff Downes is a virtuoso musician.

I went for Yes on the basis that all the members over the year have been enormously talented in their own right. I don't think Genesis were of quite the same standard individually.

It would be interesting to "combine" this current poll, with this one:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=703& amp;PN=1&FID=3&PR=3
to determine what age levels line up with what particular group(s).

Is it safe to say (OK, I know nothing is safe in an online forum... BUT), that the younger members
(anyone born after 1980) prefer the more guitar-driven group(s) ?

Personally: Gentle Giant  (as far as English musicians is concerned)

"I'm new here, so take it easy..."
