Back to the poll. I think that, musician by musician, Yes (the Fragile Yes) has the best line-up, the best man in every instrument. Ok, maybe no the very best, but the aggregation of performers was the best, in my humble opinion.

I'd go for King Crimson circa Lark's Tongues In Aspic (off this list) - it's a shame that no good quality live recordings exist with Jamie Muir on percussion. All 5 musicians were remarkable players at the top of their form, and the interplay between them seemed telepathic. Outside of the list, I'd go for Magma circa MDK/Kontharkhosz.

Hard poll, lets see not counting miscelaneous instruments not common in all bands like flute, violin, etc.:
Best Keyboardist: Rick Wakeman Yes (1)
Best drummer: Bill Bruford - Yes (2) King Crimson (1)
Best Guitar Player: Steve Hackett - Genesis (1)
Best Vocalist: Peter Gabriel - Genesis (2)
Best Bass Player: Tony Levin King Crimson (2)
So IMO is a tie between Genesis, Yes and King Crimson.
To untie I would chose the best lyricist and it goes for Peter Gabriel - Genesis (3)
My vote goes for Genesis.

Oh yeah? - Well just imagine this - Red era King Crimson (Fripp, Wetton, Bruford) and Rush are in the same pub. If Geddy Lee spilled John Wetton's pint, Wetton would deck him before he could get his hands out of his pockets, so there!

I tried to be dispassionate, and consider only in terms of ability. I nearly voted for (the original) Asia but discounted them because a) they're a band of prog musicians but play little prog, and b) because I don't think Goeff Downes is a virtuoso musician.
I went for Yes on the basis that all the members over the year have been enormously talented in their own right. I don't think Genesis were of quite the same standard individually.

It would be interesting to "combine" this current poll, with this one:
http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=703& amp;PN=1&FID=3&PR=3
to determine what age levels line up with what particular group(s).
Is it safe to say (OK, I know nothing is safe in an online forum... BUT), that the younger members
(anyone born after 1980) prefer the more guitar-driven group(s) ?
Personally: Gentle Giant (as far as English musicians is concerned)

Great Idea, Utah_guy, I'd like to see all posts connected so you can get a general idea about where people come from (musicaly that is). unfortunatly this forum doesn't allow a more elaborate enquiry-format. It would be great to make one though.
Anywhoa, I voted for Yes. because
Guitar 1. Steve Howe (progguitarist that is, Jimmy Page remains my Favourite, and allan holdsworth I now too little of)
Drums 2. Bill Bruford (1 would be Neil Peart in my list)
Keyboards 1. Rick Wakeman
Bass. 1. Chriss Squire (together with Geddy Lee)
Vocals 3. jon Anderson (1 is Fish, 2 is Peter Gabriel)
I do''t know Saga PFM and UK good enough to consider them.

first, i must say that my vote is for RUSH
as
to your comment on Lifeson, I don't think its that he's along for the
ride so much in terms of riding on the skill of Lee and Peart, Lifeson
is an outstanding guitarist in his own right and the band definitely
wouldn't be the band it was/is without him... despite that, I do agree
with you in the sense that he doesn't contribute to the band creatively
speaking. I think he's just one of those guys who wants to bust out a
mad solo... whether he had been playing in Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or
Rush... I mean, he stands out among his band members. While his band
members write and read deep philosophy, peart in particular, he's
getting arrested for assaulting a cop in florida while drunk.
btw, i got geddy lee's solo album in the mail finally today... i'll make a post in the CD section later once i get through it.

i am surprised dream theater arent on there. They are one of the best musically abled bands out there. Didn't they all go to a special musician college for years? Their music is so technical and advanced, the band can make dreamlike shredding solos, keyboard works, drum beats, 6 string bass lines and immense vocals look so easy, yet they are very complicated and difficult to play, making people drool at the sight of their godly talents.
They can even keep it up for live sets that are around 3 hours long and all of their incredible studio albums, never running out of brilliant ideas, experimental work, concepts and best of all, a huge range of the most incredible, original and challenging musician work ever!

Reed, I like Rush but nobody individually better? Collectively as band they are one of the tightest I have seen but individually I have seen many guitarists, Bassists, Vocalists and drummers/ percussionists I thought were a whole lot better Here is a listing:
Guitar: Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, John McLaughin, Al Dimeloa, Alan Holdsworth
Bass: Jaco Pastorious, Stanley Clarke, Tony Levin
Vocals: Steve Walsh, Steve Perry, Greg Lake, Peter Gabriel
Drums: Buddy Rich, Louie Belson, Michael Walden, Billy Cobham

I know ain't I pathetic?
Steve Walsh is a great singer period. Not just for Kansas. If he could write better songs he would have made it on his own.
You didn't say prog drummers as comparison you just said individualy better. As for trendy I know a lot of people who think Pert is the s*** of s*** who never heard of Carl Palmer or Bill Bruford etc. They only listen to rock/metal. He has way more fans than CP would lets say. I have seen both and I am impressed with CP in that he plays different styles of music. I know within Rush Pert does that too but not to the degree CP does. They are both great but after seeing Louie Belson and Billy Cobham at a drum clinic I was just devistated. Now maybe if I saw Pert in that forum I might feel the same way.

I chose Pink Floyd, because of
1. Rick Wright - was the most universal keyboardist
of all listed, while Wakeman, Banks and Emerson
where playing ditties with their electronics, Rick was
already creating atmospheres and soundscapes.
2. David Gilmore - his psychedelic licks deserved
center stage in the biggest progressive band of all
time.
3. Roger Waters - bass was more of a musical
barometer than squeezing out notes as well as a
vocalist that could write epics and concept albums.
4. Nick Mason - drummer with uncanny nack to pull it
all together.
a nod over ELP and Yes, with Gentle Giant the most
advanced with difficult time changes and bizarre
vocal arrangements.

I'm with richardw here: there has never been a band of better, more versatile and virtuosic - the word specifically used by the creator of this thread - musicians than Gentle Giant. Does this mean Kerry Minnear is better than Rick Wakeman? No, but it doesn't have to. It simply means that Minnear is not only an excellent all-around, virtuoso keyboardist, but that his playing, style, etc. "fit" with GG as well as anything Wakeman did with Yes. The same for all the other musicians in GG. And let's not forget that each of them is a multi-instrumentalist, with Minnear playing keys, cello, vibes, recorder, glockenspeil, percussion - all at virtuoso level - and all the others playing at least five instruments at very high if not virtuosic levels.
Thus, my order would be:
Gentle Giant Yes (Anderson, Bruford, Howe, Squire, Wakeman) ELP UK (w/Bruford, not Bozzio) Genesis (circa Selling England and The Lamb)
I also notice that only english-speaking bands are represented. Personally, I think the musicians in Deus ex Machina are easily equal to anyone represented in the poll. Again, based on the word "virtuoso" used by the creator of the thread.
Peace.

Disco comes from the 70s. Punk too.
Lots of good music, sure -- but plenty of mindless, irritating radio crap, too.
Thermonuclear war threatened us all -- that felt more terrifying, or depressing, than amazing -- at least to me.
We weren't all (3F excepted) running off to San Francisco, naked but for the flowers in our hair, you know. We went to school. We worked. We got killed in Vietnam. Our parents were likely stricter than yours, too.
It mostly felt pretty normal and mundane at the time.
Now the 60s, on the other hand, were one big acid-dropping orgy/love in! All was bliss! Even cats and dogs used to get along....

Why everybody forgets about Steve Hackett, by large the prog' guitarist with better and more solo works.
Hackett is by far more versatile than Howe, if you notice Howe has played Your Move and Clap as hsi solo pieces for more than 30 years in each and every concert without change, as if he hadn't anything more to impress the audience.
Hes an awesome player but believe me neither of both tracks is really a challenging piece, both are in fact very simple, no comparison with Horizons and the two solo works Hackett plays in each cocert, because he hardly repeats a piece.
My two cents.

Reed lover you are as unbelievably silly as Three fates and as blind to your faves but comparing any of these to the best musicians in the business namely the Yes boys is carrying your personal loves into the realms of fantasy. I'm sure if Clowny was around he'd agree with me |
Surely you jest... First .. Keith was like a combination of Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman & Patrick Moraz all in one. He could handle a Hammond, any synth, and a grand piano... and even a grand piano spinning around in the air... never heard Tony or Rick do much decent piano work, and Patrick could do piano but wasn't all that great on a hammond... neither could Rick or Tony... so there is no way that any keyboardiest from Yes could compare talent wise to Keith Emerson...
Second - Greg Lake - played bass, lead guitar and acoustic... sometimes all in one song... and he sang all the vocals (like an angel, no less). He had the hardest working guitar roadie in the business. Never saw Steve Howe play bass, or Chris Squire play lead or acousitc.. and both of them have no vocal talent... they just don't have the talent or the flexibility that Greg has. Then Jon Anderson's vocals sound like he's on helium or at least wearing extremely tight underwear most the time. So thats 3 guys in Yes that can't compare to Greg.
Then there's Carl. Carl's just amazing... I think he's an alien, he has the fasted one handed drum roll I've ever seen... he's been classically trained on all percussion instruments including concert tympani, the glockenspiel, the xylophone, gongs, bells, etc, etc... He plays with more emotion than I've ever seen Alan or Bill play with. I think thats one of the main things that I know... you feel him when he plays... its emotional.
So you guys can vote for your favorite bands... but I know that technically and emotionally... ELP will always be the best!!
And of course, the best looking group as well!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went with the mass and chose Yes. They're all fantastic musicians. ELP came a VERY close second!
In a way, I was almost tempted to choose Asia because Steve Howe was an amazing guitarist, Carl Palmer THE great drummer, Geoff Downes was a more than adequate keyboardist (but no Wakeman or Emerson) and John Wetton was a brilliant bassist/singer, and I am a great admirer of what he did with UK, Roxy Music and King Crimson.
I went for Yes however, because even though Asia had a ton of talent it was most definitely never realised in a Prog sense (but I do like them as a melodic rock band...NOT Prog!)

first, i must say that my vote is for RUSH as to your comment on Lifeson, I don't think its that he's along for the ride so much in terms of riding on the skill of Lee and Peart, Lifeson is an outstanding guitarist in his own right and the band definitely wouldn't be the band it was/is without him... despite that, I do agree with you in the sense that he doesn't contribute to the band creatively speaking. I think he's just one of those guys who wants to bust out a mad solo... whether he had been playing in Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or Rush... I mean, he stands out among his band members. The point I was making (supposedly at the expense of 3F8Ts) was that we are naturally going to say that our favourite band/musicians are the best.
As for which are the most technically gifted, that is difficult to quantify. Some bands:Rush, Yes, KC and ELP for starters, lend themselves toward more virtuosic playing because of their style.Bands like Genesis and Gentle Giant are more understated in their instrumentation. Quite often it is like comparing a Quarterback to a Running Back in NFL or Central Defender to a Striker in Football. And as ultimately fruitless.
So anyway, which pillock thinks their favourite drummer is better than Neil Peart?

Reed Lover:
You are right on the money when you state that most people will post their fav musicians and not, from an objective point of view, the most gifted technically. Just dropping my two cents, I'd have to disagree about Neil Peart. The best prog drummer on the list is IMHO William Bruford. Not because he played in two of the greatest prog bands ever in the height of their days but because technically, really no one compares. Peart has some real nice chops and a great feel, but Bruford is a time-god. He can play in all signatures, when the rest of the band is playing in whatever other signature with such subtleness it's just unbelievable. Best guitarist on the list is Fripp or Gilmour IMHO. But there are far superiour players, such as Holdsworth or Steve Morse. Best Bass player would be Levin or Squire. But here also, can greater Gods be named. Thinking about Dave Larue, or even a Billy Sheehan.

I have a minor in college in music as a percussionist. And I love Bill Bruford... and even Peart.... but nothing any of them has ever done has made me go "How the hell did he do that???".... At the end of the day it is all about opinion Three Fates, but I still think you allow your involvement with Greg to blind you.Yes he was a terrific vocalist a very good bassist and guitarist but being multi talented doesn't mean your great at all you do.If so we must throw in Mike Oldfield, who is superb at all the instruments he masters. As for choosing betwen the keyboardists that's possibly the most difficult. I think you'll find ample evidence of Rick's piano skills on his various solo works but to split him or Keith would be the hardest.Squire is a remarkable bassist as is Bruford on drums. There will be many others we all favour, these are mine.Oh and lest I forget the greatest voice of them all Mr.Jon Anderson still touring and still as good as he ever was and that's simply viewing this from a singing point of a view.I really will have to listen to Gentle Giant, somehow I have missed them. Can anyone recommend what to listen to first.

Swinton, Opinions come from ones experience in life yours mine everyone. Why would 3 fates be invalidated by getting to know the musicians no matter how intimately? That statement is ludicrous. Actually I think that makes her more of an expert of at least the bands she has traveled with. She she's things the public never sees the way they practice both individually and as a band. She sees how things affect their music.
Acknowledging ELP is one of the most talented bands in Rock history I don't think individually they are the best players I have ever heard. They had people they listened too and learned from also Carl learned from Louie Belson and Buddy Rich among others who I bet if you asked ELP they still would think some of these guys were better than themselves. So to say they are the best ever is still your own opinion only, 3 Fates.

Your statement is sort of an encouragement to me. I am a grandfather now, and the older I get, the more I appreciate the past, ESPECIALLY when it comes to music.
Yes, it truely was an amazing time for me personally and I think for western culture in general.
I recall it being so exciting - especially in the early 70's - when all
this progressive music was in the process of being created.
Question #1: Will there be another cultural / philosphical revolution

# 1. In my opinion, NO, not to that extent, but I do feel that there is some return to quality tastes in music... I think that's why this forum is growing. More and more musicians are pushing into diversifying their music.
# 2. Whilst the major media seems to be dumbing down, the underground movements are getting smarter and gaining recognition. Even in progressive rock circles, changes are occuring, sites for downloading music, on line warehouses and purchasing businesses are popping up left and right. It must be working or they'd have hit the toilets by now.
I'm patient.

Frenchie:
Re GG, get Octopus, In A Glass House, and The Power and the Glory. Those are their three "must-have" albums.
Threefates:
I agree with you re Emerson. However, Lake is simply not the "virtuoso" bass player that Squire is. (I would say he is about equal to Wetton). Nor, as good as he may be, is he a "virtuoso" guitarist of any type - certainly not like Howe, Holdsworth, Fripp, Gilmour, even Hackett. As for Palmer, although I did not see them live, I have heard all their albums, including the live ones. Palmer is simply not the versatile virtuoso that Bruford is, or perhaps even Collins (if you include his work with Brand X). Palmer may be every bit as good at what he does (especially re "speed") as Bruford and Collins, but he is simply not as versatile or virtuosic.
Velvetclown: I saw Wackerman drum with Zappa's band; he was somewhat "restrained," but amazing and tasty all the same.
Re drummers in general, Peart is largely a "journeyman": he is highly technically proficient and generally tasteful within the bounds of what Rush does, but he is no Bruford, Collins, Palmer, etc. He may be a "virtuoso" solely from the point of view of technical proficiency, but he is not particularly versatile. Colaiuta is scary, and certainly a virtuoso in every way.
That's my two cents...

I have to disagree with you here Maani. I never said Greg was a virtuoso on any of the guitars, just the fact that he plays them all, bass, acoustic, lead and rhythm, extremely well and within the same song at times; which makes him much more versatile than the others you mentioned. Also he can do that while singing some very complicated stuff at times... with epic long lyrics... You try remembering all the words to Pirates.... Also I would put him up against any of those guitarists on an acoustic.. including Steve Howe...

Who would of thought it, but I disagree with you on this also. My advice.. next time Carl is in town doing one of those drum clinics... go see what I mean. I think you'd retract that statement!! Reed Lover:
According to Webster's, a "journeyman" is "an experienced reliable worker or performer especially as distinguished from one who is brilliant or colorful."
I maintain that Peart, as good as he is technically (and I do not argue this at all), is not a particularly "creative," much less "brilliant" or "innovative" player. Nor do I find him particularly "inspiring." Indeed, I find him very "machine-like," rather than having any emotional grounding or "charge." "Colorful?" Maybe, to a minimal degree. But he is, as the definition says, mostly "experienced" (i.e., technically proficient) and "reliable."
"Journeyman" may be slightly overstated - but only slightly.
Peace.

In the Uk a journeyman is someone not talented enough to make it at the highest grade.
Could be a goal for the next 12 mnths Maani. Secure an interview with Mr Peart and inform him that in your humble opinion he is neither creative, brilliant or innovative.
Have you ever listened to Signals or Test For Echo?
As for the legendary drum solo-could be red-faces all round if he grabs a Grammy!
Your opinion, which of course you are entitled to,is just that. You present it as received wisdom or a holy proclamation,my friend and that is what qualifies you for that award.
