It has to be the first version.
In first place it was original and surprised the world with the one man Orchestra.
It was so shocking that a Foilm company bought the rights of the album for The Exorcist, and if we add the fact that this release was the starting point of Virgin Records, a once explorative and experimental label, we're before the one and only version.
Some of the others are good too, but only remakes of the original artistic expression, not the same value IMO.

I'd say the original TB's A-Side with most of the TB2 B-side, ending with the Sailor's Hornpipe from Boxed. And with 'Far above the Clouds' as a bonus track.

It's only the first part of TB,in other words about 25 minutes, which makes me think you might be right about another live version made earlier anyway because from the dim, dark unknown regions I refer to as my memory,I do now recall that an earlier live version was done, probably in 74,in Royal Albert Hall or a similar place and that cannot be this one since this is from a tv performance. I don't think the first one was filmed, perhaps that's why another one was made for tv. And the sound quality is very good. |
Great, so there are two versions, involving Hillage

If my memory serves me right, yes. Which is a very shaky premise at the best of times, mind you.

I saw him do it live at Knebworth. Not exactly festival material but still cool to have been there.
Santana were awesome.

The version he did at Knebworth was great and it was released on video in 84,that's the one that's called The Essential Mike Oldfield. It also contains "Ommadawn" part one from the same concert, also great. There are many, myself definitely included, who are waiting eagerly for this to be released on dvd but so far it hasn't happened for some mysterious reason. Every other bloody thing he has ever done in front of a camera,no matter how insignificant, has been released on dvd by now but not this. I'm not the only one puzzled by that. I've had the video for 20 years now and it has long since worn out so the dvd is looong overdue!
