I would have to stay with the original.

It's definitely TB II for me,I didn't even really think the first one was any good at all until the 2003 re-recording,I have never liked the original, even TB III edges ahead of that one!

The answer is obvious: the original
The 1975 orchestral version come in second position.

The original ... although I suspect it's one of those dogmatic things, because there have been certain segments where I though Tubular Bells II outdid the original ... have a soft spot for Tubular X too

One time i get on Internet a live version of Tubular Bells with Steve Hillage on guitar, i can remember it was from 1974, but unfortunatly the sound was poor (and even worst because of MP3 compression).
But the music was fantastic.
Does someone else knows it?

It's actually from 1976 and it's out now on dvd. I think it's called The Essential Mike Oldfield or some such rubbish, because it's not the essential at all,it's filled with all the ghastly pop videos he did in the 80's,but there is some good stuff on it too, like the live version of TB I with Steve Hillage on guitar. At least good stuff for those who have been pining for that to be released for some years now,and there are some mildly interesting promos from the 70's on the dvd too and finally the full video extravaganza of "The Wind Chimes" can be enjoyed in all it's computerized, late 80's glory but personally I find 21 minutes of dancing Balinese among computer images a tad tiring,so I still prefer just the music without the visuals.

No,it's not called The Essential Mike Oldfield at all,I was thinking of another one,it's called Elements. Much better title considering the content.

Great!

How long is the piece with Hillage?
Is the sound good?

It's only the first part of TB,in other words about 25 minutes, which makes me think you might be right about another live version made earlier anyway because from the dim, dark unknown regions I refer to as my memory,I do now recall that an earlier live version was done, probably in 74,in Royal Albert Hall or a similar place and that cannot be this one since this is from a tv performance. I don't think the first one was filmed, perhaps that's why another one was made for tv. And the sound quality is very good.

It has to be the first version.

In first place it was original and surprised the world with the one man Orchestra.

It was so shocking that a Foilm company bought the rights of the album for The Exorcist, and if we add the fact that this release was the starting point of Virgin Records, a once explorative and experimental label, we're before the one and only version.

Some of the others are good too, but only remakes of the original artistic expression, not the same value IMO.

I'd say the original TB's A-Side with most of the TB2 B-side, ending with the Sailor's Hornpipe from Boxed. And with 'Far above the Clouds' as a bonus track.

Great, so there are two versions, involving Hillage

If my memory serves me right, yes. Which is a very shaky premise at the best of times, mind you.

I saw him do it live at Knebworth. Not exactly festival material but still cool to have been there.

Santana were awesome.

The version he did at Knebworth was great and it was released on video in 84,that's the one that's called The Essential Mike Oldfield. It also contains "Ommadawn" part one from the same concert, also great. There are many, myself definitely included, who are waiting eagerly for this to be released on dvd but so far it hasn't happened for some mysterious reason. Every other bloody thing he has ever done in front of a camera,no matter how insignificant, has been released on dvd by now but not this. I'm not the only one puzzled by that. I've had the video for 20 years now and it has long since worn out so the dvd is looong overdue!
