he is great, but in my opinion he is not the best prog metal drummer,
the best pm drummer is alex holzwarth of sieges even...just listen to
their records and you'll get my point.

As I noted in another similar thread, for me the determination of who is the "best" drummer (which is already a subjective idea) is made by asking a single simple question: who could play who else's parts? For example, could Peart play Bruford's parts in Crimson, Yes or UK? Could Collins play Peart's parts in Rush? Could Portnoy play Collins' parts in Brand X? Etc.
In this regard, I believe the two best drummers in prog are Marco Matteuzzi and Claudio Trotta, both of Deus ex Machina. Either of them could easily step into Crimson, Yes, Rush, UK, Dream Theater, et al, and play those drummers' parts. However, with the possible exception of Bruford (and possibly Collins, maybe, given his work with Brand X), none of the drummers above would last four minutes in Deus ex Machina, especially when DeM is really moving...
If you want to hear "frightening" drumming, listen to DeM's live album, Diacronia Metronomiche. Trotta's drumming on that album is almost beyond comprehension: no matter how fast or complicated they get, Trotta does not lose one second or miss one beat. And we're talking about live drumming, where you don't get a chance to overdub if you screw up.
Peace.

IMO A SKILED DRUMMER WITH PROPER STUDY OVER HIS PARTS CAN STAND ANYWHERE.
DONīT TELL ME THAT PEART PORTNOY BOZIO ETC CANīT PLAY A PART IF THEY PRCTICE ON IT.
THAT STANDS FOR ANY MUSICIAN WITH A CLASS SKILLS.

Neil Peart, Mike Portney, Bill Bufford and of course Carl Palmer...... but "The Professor", Neil Peart gets my vote hands down.

Check my avatar and you'll know who gets my vote.,
altough i love every drummer listed. But it's kind of
unfair because i we talk about drummers (and not
prog-drummers) there a whole bunch left out (Vinnie
Colaiuta, Carter Beauford, Horacio "El Negro"
Hernandez, Mike Mangini, Virgil Donati, among
many, many others).

That's your opinion,I grew up with a father who played drums,3 older brothers that played drums,am a drummer myself, and was exposed to both of them quite a bit while growing up.I think they were both equally good.

Where is Virgil Donati?
Where is Billy Cobham???
Where is Vinny Colaiuta???
and no Gadd? no Tony Willianms? no BUDDY???
These are the founding fathers of progressive drumming.

Quite a list to choose from. Have to go with Neil Peart.
Buddy Rich? Neil had to start from somewhere! What a legend!

Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru deserves a special mention, because he is the inventor of the "Mani-Tom", a tom that can be in- and deflated with air via a hose that is blown into during play. There are some very good examples of the use of it on the live album of Guru Guru (which I highly recommend, by the way).
