Wow, no mention of Genesis:
At age 18 - 19 they were writting songs about Revolutions (The Knife) and about great authors work (White Mountain based in Jack London's White Fang)
At the age of 19 - 20 they were singing about Greek Mythology (Fountain of Salmacis), Complex violence and Sci FI (Musical Box), Sarcastic views of Society (Harold the Barrel)
At the Age of 20 - 21 it was the turn of Hystory (Can-Utility and the Coastliners), The Bible re interpreted (Supper's Ready), Botanics (The Return of the Giant Hogweed), etc
- Robert Fripp was 23 when ITCOTCK was released and 28 when Red was released
- Jon Anderson was 25 when Yes was released and 27 when Roundabout appeared in Fragile
- Dave Gilmour was 23 when Piper saw the light (even when he was not a member yet) 27 when Echoes (the song) was released becaudse he was 57 when the album of the same name reached the stores.
- Ian Anderson was 23 when Jethro Tull released Locomotive Breath
At the Age of 24 Peter Gabriel had already ended his career with Genesis after making a complete conceptual albuium as The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,
Genesis was formed by him at the age of 15 or 16 in 1966 with Anthony Phillips who was one year younger plus Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford who were several months younger.
That's being innovative at a very early age.

I voted for Machine Gun by Hendrix.
I wish Hendrix would have stayed with that band because they had cooler songs, and Billy Cox is a waaaayyy better bassist than Noel Redding, in a matter of fact, Noel Redding blows at bass. 
That song was amazing, the machine gun sounds, the effects, everything. Jimi rocks.

Just a little confused as I'm not exactly sure who was how old when ...
went with Iron Butterfly ... which I think had a huge influence on
proggers ...
I know I was blown away when i found out the average age of the guys in
Free when they cut their first album Tons Of Sobs was less than 18 ...
Steve Winwood wuz another one ...

Hey Karn Evil, all the music from The Crazy world of Arthur Brown was composed and/or arranged by
- Arthur Brown
- Arthur Brown/Vincent Crane
- Arthur Brown/Vincent Crane/Mike Finesilver/Peter Ker
Carl Palmer is not credited for any song.
We're talking about the guys who created the music and/or lyrics or at least credited in the composers list, a player can be almost anyone but the task in thisthread is to CREATE, in the case of Genesis you don't see me mentioning Chris Stewart, John Mayhew or even Phil Collins because his contribution to songwritting and/or lyrics was almost non existent in the Gabriel years
Just to end, and because you mention him, Phil Collins is almost exactly the same age of Carl Palmer or to be more exact 49 days older than Palmer.
With the difference that almost at the same age, Palmer was only credited in two songs of ELP debut album and Collins was credited as co-author of each and every song from his debut in Genesis with Nursery Cryme.

Keith Emerson...early 20's...wrote the 'Five Bridges suite'...not only for his band but for an orchestra..gotta admit, witing for the orchestra, he did have help...but he Keith had the idea...and wrote the music, he had the vision lol....i think that was pretty good for his age
