Gorgoroth is so heavy you really can't pinpoint a certain note.  Gorgoroth just sounds like screaming air blasting out of an amp.

I gotta say Opeth's Morningrise as being the heaviest I ever heard. Now, their other stuff is right up there but Morningrise tends to have that heavy edge that doesn't seem to be in the rest.....not to say that the others aren't heavy.
Can you tell me where my country lies...

Symphony X: Divine Wings of Tragedy is pretty heavy. Also, their CD The Odyssey has some heavy metal traks (not the sone "The Odyssey" itself)
If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud!

Atheist is one of the best example for progressive brutal bands. All their three albums are to re-released by Relapse at the fall of 2005. I recommend them to everyone who has the ability to bear jazz/fusion and death metal at the same time.
So the heaviest prog albums are:

Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Lethargy - It's Hard To Write With A Little Hand
Voivod - Phobos (it is not just heavy but the most difficult album I've ever heard)

as far as Opeth goes you guys...I'd say My arms your hearse is their heaviest...that or Deliverance.  My arms is the better album though, so I'll go with that one...April Ethereal and Karma...god damn excellent tracks.

Heaviest prog metal album?

I'd say Atheist - unquestionable presence, Atrocity - Hallucinations, Demilich - Nespithe is famn jazzy and  brutal, Ved buens ende is some crazy progresssive black metal...

War by Messhuggah from Rare Trax because I can't get anyone to stay in the same room with me when I play it and they can handle the others.

I totally agree with Abbath, exactly what I was going to post! I never really thought of Dream Theater as being heavy...but Meshuggah is! And if you would like to hears something REALLY heavy, try Scarve, the french band with an amazing drummer! I don't think it would ever get into progarchives, but the drumming is superb!
Currently listening to:
- Andromeda
- Pagan's Mind
- Kamelot

I'd say Nile's new album, undeniably heavy, and very prog for a death metal record

It's a shame that their previous vocalist quit the band ...

Progressive death metal, an area not really covered by this site, is the area you really should check out - Meshugga, Cryptopsy, Death, Dying Fetus, Obiturary, Necrophagist, Morbid Angel, the list goes on. If you want to find something unique, you need to step away from this site and find some stuff for yourself - i suggest some directory sites of possible bands to look up, a file sharing/p2p program like KaZaA or WinMX and Amazon to buy your disks.
