early ELO works were OK before an abysmal fall into syrupy easy listening stuff

I love both bands, but ELP were the most consistent at producing quality albums - well at least until BSS.

As for ELO the only albums of theirs that hit the sweet spot for me are the debut, ELO2, and A New World Record. Everything else I find a bit hit and miss - and I mostly lost interest after 'Discovery' when they ditched their distinctive cello/violin accompaniments.

Neither are my favourites but I listen to ELO occasionally still, while it's been years sincee I wanted to listen to anything ELP.

ELP, had some easy, fun things, but, in general they were more towards the composing side of music and its interpretation than it was about a pop song.

Only thing missing is that one album cover with the poop coming out looking like gold!
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

ELO was in my Top 5 bands 20 years ago, but I find myself listening to ELP more nowadays, and hardly listen to ELO.

I'm not the biggest fan of ELP but they have some great material and I have a lot of respect for their originality and ability. On the other hand I don't remember any single moment in my life in which I wanted to listen to an ELO track, sorry.

I, of course am way more into the Krautrock, RIO, Post-Rock, Pysch and Folk sides of PA. I have seen some vitriol from various people into bands that goes way beyond your feeling a little pissed on a very bad day. I really am glad you decided against leaving PA at the time.

Thanks Thumbs Up. I was being a bit of a 'prat' , it was just unfortunate timing when I was not feeling my best. I've thought of leaving PA many times over the years but always end up sticking around. I enjoy the banter and learning about some new prog acts which I could never find any other way. You are one of the best and most thoughtful posters for sure and I appreciate it. On a side line I have made peace with my decision to leave my job, it was causing anxiety that I made it so abruptly, but it was for the best and I've not had any second thoughts.

Roy Wood is generally very famous in the UK for just one thing and it's that time of the year again!

Roy is much respected by those in the know but sadly will be mainly remembered for a cheesy seasonal song.

I am surprised that their early albums are not given more creedence. From The Sun To The World on ELO2 is wonderful and I like a lot of what is on those albums, no doubt Wood being a main driver. The later commercial stuff even up to Discovery still has musical merit in my opionion. Mr Blue Sky is part of a side long suite on Out Of The Blue and no one mentions that. I think they were at least as good as 10CC as a 'radio band' and Jeff Lynne was a clever creative guy. I wouldn't dismiss them. Maybe not that 'progressive' but still could play and they came from the same Birmingham (UK) rock scene that gave us the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and a few others.
