^ Ok, sorry. I've misunderstood how you rate/listen to music in general then.

No problem. All of the album listings I copied and pasted here were albums I'd listened to previously on my Prog Britannia blog. Smile

Isn't Naxatras' "Waves" crashing onto the shores of our eardrums as if we're transported to a sea on a distant planet 🌌 ? In this magical ✨ version, the addition of a string quartet elevates the spacey mid-tempo instrumental to an otherworldly realm 🎻 while conjuring a beautifully haunting atmosphere. To me, the soaring strings and haunting guitar riffs 🎸 evoke imaginary the undulating waves of another planet's ocean 🌊, as if the music itself has become that sentient, pulsing fluid entity from a distant world. 🌌 ✨🔭

5 stars 2020: Aries - Because of My Fears - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ-_mRulzvY

ARIES     Ram-bam-ba-lamb! It's written in the stars that Aries are the most exciting thing to happen in Greece since the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, when the Persians defeated the Spartans, winning 2-1 after extra time. You don't need to climb Mount Olympus to meet the prog gods, because the tremendous trio of titans are all right here on this one amazing album. This is Space Rock, Jim, but not as we know it, going boldly where no Space Rock album has ever gone before (split infinitives permitting!). "Because of My Fears"  is light years ahead of any Space Rock album I know of, and where you'd have to travel to the distant galaxy of Andromeda to hear anything even remotely approaching this magnitude of brilliance. Aries shines as brightly as a distant Quasar - the brightest object in the known universe. The album is one long continuous five-part suite of music, so set the controls for the heart of the Sun, power up into interstellar overdrive at max factor five and prepare for a fantastic voyage of a lifetime in the best 43 minutes you've ever spent outside of the bedroom. It's a stellar stunner!  What REALLY sets this fabulous album apart though, is the beautiful siren-song call of the charming female vocalist. After all, when was the last time you ever heard a female lead singer on a Space Rock album? Probably never. The pounding percussive power of the Duracel drummer is worthy of a mention too, sounding like a battering ram with an artillery barrage of sound the like of which we haven't heard since the furious fusillade of cannon fire at the climax of Tchaikovsky's triumphal  1812 Overture. And let's not forget the incredible guitarist either, whose psychedelic, purple-haze freak-outs would make Jimi Hendrix jealous. This stunning Space Rock extravaganza is a sonic blast from beginning to end and one of the most electrifying albums you'll ever hear  this side of the Milky Way galaxy. Ad Astra!

Meanwhile, Russell Grant reveals what the stars hold in their heavenly little handbag for those of us born under the sign of Aries. Smile

Something tells me that you're going to absolutely adore this footage featuring 42 minutes of incredible performance at Kent University in 1979! 🌌✨ Beside Steve Hillage, the unbelievably talented lineup includes Miquette Giraudy, John McKenzie, Dave Stewart, and Andy Anderson! 🚀🎸🎶 🌠

Question for PA - how exactly do we define "space rock?"

I've been a fan of "space rock" for decades without really understanding its meaning.   I hail from Chicago, which was once called the "space rock capital of the world."  Touring space-rock groups like Hawkwind found a welcoming audience, and we had a very nice homegrown space rock movement with bands like Stratosled.

My interpretation of space-rock has been that it is highly dependent upon synthesizers, and I often would refer people to albums like "Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream.  However, there is a great variety of music under the banner of space-rock.

Thoughts, please?

✨ 🇫🇮 In the vast expanse of the Nordic soundscape, the contemporary ensemble known as Finnish band Taipuva Luotisuora emerges like a celestial body! 🪐 Their take on Space Rock 🎸 is a delightful blend of warmth and wistfulness, where synths swirl like nebulae in a dreamy galaxy, creating an enchanting contrast between the weighty gravitas of rock and the ethereal lightness of space! 🌠
Behold this stellar live performance of their mesmerising track "Volucris Orbita," which orbits around our hearts from their 2013 album titled "8." 🌕🚀 This footage captures the magic at the Cycle Club in Calenzano, Italy, where sound waves ripple through the cosmos, inviting us to drift along on this sonic voyage. 🌌🎶🛸

🛸 Space Rock is a guitar-driven genre characterised by its hypnotic, repetitive rhythms that create an immersive auditory experience, complemented by intricate electric guitar riffs and soloing and ethereal synths, resulting in a soundscape that is often both whimsical and trippy, inviting listeners to embark on a cosmic journey through sound. 🚀✨

🌠 Let's take a groovy ride back to 1977 when the music was pure magic! ✨ Igra Staklenih Perli, a 🇷🇸 Serbian band that floated through Belgrade's underground scene during that year, gifted us with some truly stellar sounds. 🌈 This live track is called "Lyzzard Square" 🦎 which is nothing short of a cosmic explosion! 🚀 This track is a kaleidoscope of space-rock vibes—original, exciting, and oh-so-trippy! 💫 The audio quality might not be crystal clear like the stars on a moonlit night, but who cares? It doesn't bother at all 'cause it features a dreamy and floatin' synths 🎹 , great guitar riffs 🎸, and thunderous bass sound! It's all about the space-rock journey from the year of Punk that can even be heard in this live recording! 🎶✨
A devoted fan crafted the visuals accompanying this celestial tune, a true testament to the love and connection we share in this vast universe.🌌 According to whispers from the YouTube ether, this magical performance was recorded at their concert at Belgrade University in 1977. 👽 So let your mind drift among the stars and let the music take you on an intergalactic adventure! 🪐 🌟

Hi,

Kinda thought about it all night, believe it or not.

I never thought of anything is this or that ... other than "jazz", "rock music" and "classical" ... and the rest ... fits into the area "who cares".

I think one of the problems of classifying anything and them compartmentalizing it into the corner of the closet, makes it "better" and easier to find and discuss. The fact of the matter is that this is an idea, and not exactly true, since tomorrow yo want to do something else with your music, and you will NEVER be defined or spoken about your own music, like it was described and prescribed.

IF, the idea of "space rock" made any sense, a lot of the stuff in the early Fillmore's and then UFO's and other places would be listed ... but no ... we still think that The Grateful Dead is just another garage band, that was not creative and inventive, and above all, based on the notations ... were doing REAL MUSIC, instead of just four-square notes and chords. Listen to DD describe it ... even he was amazed at the notes and abilities of the players involved ... we refuse to give credit to any of them! Oh, excuse me ... Eight Miles High ... is space rock, specially if you can find the long versions, starting with Golden Earring! It was once mentioned that the Fillmore did not have stage space for keyboards ... which allows for guitars to have their fun!!! But in Europe, keyboards were better appreciated and used ... and given a lot more credit for the ambience created.

Originally, I think it was "the trip", and it didn't matter how it was done. You had Iron Butterfly with an organ, and the Fillmore's with guitars, as an example. Their main drive and idea, was tripping, since it is thought (and actually believed) that every one was a moron and were stoned senseless, when you know that some folks would not exactly live that way at all or took their musical knowledge for granted.

I think, that the idea "changed" when the music all of a sudden was about SPACE, and you got to remember that in the late 60's and early 70's were the MOON years ... and lyrics that had any kind of mention about space, helped take it away from simply the TRIP that was before, where the subject matter was not important.

I tend, to get out of the room, the minute someone mentions "space rock" ... basically because the idea has become ridiculous and not even well defined, and on top of it, many musicians are simply making noise from the start, which does not exactly is considered "space rock" ... we don't look at Faust as that at all, but if you get stoned (as many if us did way back when!) and listened to those early albums, they were trippy and far out ... and you didn't worry about it being space rock, or space noise, or just sounds being stretched and distorted via a new synth. I guess that means that Ax Gernrich is an idiot making all that noise and doing a really good impression of Jimi ... but prog/progressive music lovers will never put on those albums, specially the live ones with the totally out of this world noise from the guitar! Sorry Ax, we don't like your style of space music!

The issue, that hurts is seeing a lot of people call this thing as "space rock" and the lyrics, themselves have nothing to do with "space" (here there or anywhere) at all. And because something were extended, we think it was the root of "space rock" ... one example that is really off key, is one of the samples posted, or early Hawkwind, and in fact they duplicated this later in "Electric Tepee", since in essence, it was just a far out powow that took place as the band got setup with some of them or not would not even be important, but all of a sudden, a drum/noise circle, becomes a band, known as Hawkwind, and they never sounded like that ... except for that bit at the end of the "Electric Tepee" album, which rock fans, specially progressive rock music, or prog rock music fans, do not like, because they are not sure why that is even there ... and we having got to the part, yet, where we have, more than likely, mis-represented what the band was about! Hawkwind or not!

Now, while some may label their tunes as space-rock, I prefer to orbit around the notion that they are more akin to the Berlin School of Electronic Music—a shimmering nebula of pulsating rhythms and celestial melodies!✨✨✨🎶
But hold onto your helmets, fellow travellers! 🪐💫 I simply must honourably share a stellar gem from their 1977 live album "Encore." 🚀 🌌 Enter "Coldwater Canyon," a track that transcends time and space with its mesmerising soundscapes. 🛸 The electric guitar solo by Edgar Froese is nothing short of a cosmic odyssey—distorted and drenched in otherworldly vibes, it spirals through dimensions like a comet streaking across the night sky! 🎸🌠

According to TD members 3/4 of Encore were collage of live tracks overdubbed in studio.
The fourth track is an almost complete studio track ( with elements from Oedipus Tyrannus a TD opus composed between Phaedra and Rubycon)
(same statement for Ricochet whose side one is a studio work with added reactions of the crowd borrowed from a Croydon (UK) gig )...

🚀 Prepare to embark on a transcendent journey through the orbit of current space-rock with the sonic odyssey known as "Mesozoic Sunrise" (live in Zagreb, 2021) 🌅 the track by 🇭🇷Croatian band Lizards Exist 🦎
🌌 The interstellar instrumental unleashes the guitar from its earthly confines, sending it soaring into the stratosphere with mind-bending solos that twist and turn like UFOs darting through the night sky. 🛸Meanwhile, the bass, drums, and keys swirl around like planets in orbit 🌎 🛰️ , dancing harmoniously within the gravitational pull of the main riffing framework. 🔺🏜️🌙 🪐💫

Hi,

Saw this tour in LA at the Greek Theater, with the lights and magick of Laserium in the show. The picture at the back of the album is the trees in the back of the open air theater, "on fire" from all the lazers ... it crackled, fizzled and had everyone going wow. Of the 4 times I saw TD, this was the best one, although the original first tour at the Santa Monica Civic was excellent and probably more exciting since it was their first time here. But "Encore" is the far out one, because "I was there" and saw it all ... totally far out and a night to remember forever.
