Subject: You Are in Orbit! Space-Rock Appreciation Thread!

I am opening this thread in honor of the 50th anniversary of the release of the album You by Gong.At first I thought to open a topic about the album as such, and then I decided to expand it to the entire subgenre of space rock.
So, welcome to the dedicated thread on space-rock, a genre that transcends earthly boundaries and takes us on sonic journeys through the cosmos.Whether you're a long-time fan or just discovering the ethereal sounds of bands like Hawkwind and Gong, please share your thoughts, favorite albums and songs, and personal experiences with this mesmerizing genre.Let's come together to celebrate the music that inspires us to dream beyond the stars!

Speaking of space-rock journeys, I'm thrilled to announce a gem
from 2006: the live video of Gong performing "Isle of Everywhere." This
cosmic performance is not just a gig; it's an intergalactic experience
that transcends time and space!

How wonderful, and a great way to start the thread (Gong-You)! Welcome to PA!!
I saw Gong in Chicago, March 10, 1996 and they were amazing!! Daevid Allen, Bloomdido, Mike Howlett, and Steffe Sharpstrings on guitar & synth!!
I looked Mr. Sharpstrings up recently, he is recording some amazing space-rock with glissando guitar, synth and all sorts!! Please check this out! He has a lot of material on YouTube and Bandcamp!!

Ah, the cosmic vibrations of the Gong as well as Mr.
Sharpstrings' echo are like a vortex of colours swirling in the mind's
eye. Daevid Allen and his merry band of sonic sorcerers—Bloomdido, Mike
Howlett, and Steffe Sharpstrings—were surely conjuring up a space-rock
symphony that danced with the stars and tickled the very fabric of
reality!🌈✨
Now, get ready to ride the waves of sound and spirit
as I share a live video of Gong feat. Steve Hillage performing their
mind-bending anthem, "Master Builder." Let's tune into the frequencies
of the universe and let our minds expand like a kaleidoscope in full
bloom, where the music flows like a river of stardust and every note is a
step towards spacey enlightenment!! 🚀💫

On the topic of Gong - You, it was only a fairly recent discovery for me that Steve Hillage's "The Glorious Om Riff" is a basically a version of "Master Builder" from You. I've always loved the "The Glorious Om Riff".
There is an irony that this thread is about all things Space Rock given that Gong is not in that genre on PA.
Anyway, I've always regarded Hawkwind as the definitive space rock band. Perhaps the ultimate Hawkwind album is the live Space Ritual. But my favourite Hawkwind track is "Opa-Loka" (from Warrior on the Edge of Time):
Another of my favourite space rock albums is Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye.

Gazeuse! Unravelling Gong's complicated discography of 57 varieties of album turned out to be almost as tricky as walking the high-wire at a Continental Circus. Gong have been in existence for over half a century now, so I thought it About Time we paid Tribute to a great band and Rejoiced together in their wonderful music. Gong breezed in like a Shamal with their debut album Magick Brother in 1970, but their real Breakthrough came three years later with the acclaimed Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy. Gong began as a band led by Aussie Daevid Allen, but they then had a Second Wind in the mid-1970's when Pierre Moerlen branched off to form his own jazzy version of Gong. A later third version of the band - known as Mother Gong - emerged in the late-70's, led by Wild Child Gilli Smyth. I don't want to create A Storm in a Teapot, but personally speaking, I wouldn't give a Flying Teapot for any of Mother Gong's albums, although I realise they have a strong following here at PA. Anyway, to cut a long story short, my favourite Gong album by far is Downwind - a precious album to treasure like an Angel's Egg - and I'll now Leave It Open for You to choose your favourite Gong album.

Ah, the cosmic conundrum of Gong! Isn't it delightful when subgenres play hide-and-seek? While Gong may be orbiting in the Canterbury scene on Progarchives, their sound is like a cosmic smoothie—blending elements of jazz, psychedelia, and yes, even space-rock! It's as if they took a detour through the galaxy and decided to drop off some funky vibes at the Canterbury café. So, while they might not have their official "space rock" badge on PA, we all know that their music can launch you into the stratosphere of sonic exploration. Who needs labels when you can have interstellar jams? Therefore, prepare to embark on a cosmic journey as we dive into the kaleidoscopic sounds of Steve Hillage Band's 2006 rendition of "Solar Musick Suite," where the sunbeams align and the music transcends reality! Tune in for a mind-bending experience that promises to warp your senses and elevate your spirit! 🌈😄

I've never thought of Gong as a Space Rock band either, but seeing as Gong were the first band mentioned at the top of this thread by a new PA member who's clearly a fan of Gong, this seemed like a good place to post their entire discography (and that's just for starters).

Should
I perhaps have titled this thread "The Cosmic Odyssey of Gong's "You": A
Space-Rock Revelation"? So there you have it! Gong's "You" isn't just
another "Canterbury" album; it's a transcendent experience—a sonic
odyssey that boldly claims its rightful place among the stars as a
definitive Space Rock creation. As we celebrate its 50th
anniversary this year, let us raise our glasses (or perhaps our bongs)
to this timeless space-rock masterpiece that continues to inspire
generations of dreamers and wanderers alike. ✨

Gong's You absolutely is a Space Rock album, as well as being Canterbury. Prog Archives is limited to one genre (or label) for whole discographies while band's individual album could be labelled differently commonly and individual albums could have multiple labels. I think it makes more sense in such topics to think on the album level rather than whole discographies. Not all Gong would be described as Space Rock. You is for me its spaciest album, and for me its greatest album, but the whole Radio Gnome Invisible Trilogy has Space rock qualities. The earlier Gong albums I would call Psychedelic, and later ones more on the jazz fusion/ jazz rock side.
Gong's You, Angel's Egg and Flying Teapot are all great and applicable to this topic. Whatever you call You, You is out of this world!

woven from the threads of Gongonesque spacey sound and Hawkwind's
interstellar heavy rock vibes. Imagine yourself floating in a nebula of
colours, where each note resonates like stardust dancing in the cosmic

Thanks, I enjoy all of that music, but what we call "Space Rock" is now rather moldy & old. I prefer Tangerine Dream in the genre.
Steffe Sharpstrings (former guitarist to Gong) is putting out some amazing, and new, Space Rock, please explore!! I'm VERY impressed!!

Space rock, a genre that emerged in the early 1970s, continued
to evolve through the 1990s and into the 21st century, with new bands
incorporating cosmic themes and experimental sounds into their music. 🌌
Boldly exploring sonic landscapes, these artists drew inspiration from
earlier pioneers while also pushing the boundaries of what space rock
could be, resulting in a diverse array of sounds that resonated with
both old fans and new listeners alike.
⭐ 😊 🌍 ☄️ ⭐ 🚀💫 KREL’s journey from
local gigs in Greater Manchester to international recognition
illustrates both their dedication to craft and the evolving landscape of
music during the early '90s.✨ Their discography reflects an ongoing
exploration of sound that continues to inspire new generations of
musicians within the space-rock genre. 🌌✨😄🌠 Space Rock is here to
stay! 🌠😄✨🌌

🚀 Hawkwind delivered an amazing performance at the Stonehenge Free
Festival in 1984, captivating the audience with their signature blend
of space rock and psychedelic sounds while also embodying the spirit of
counterculture that defined the festival atmosphere. 🌅

I've always liked Guru, Guru. They are one of those bands in life that is divided into 3 parts. Space Rock, Jazz Rock , World Music....however...I don't see them that way because I hear a Space Rock style on the Fusion type albums and the more World Music oriented stuff. If you want to see it as divided that's fine. I like their approach to Space Rock. The longevity of it is evident from early 70s to the present on albums like Rotate.
Hawkwind I have mixed feelings sometimes depending on the end result or overall affect their albums have on me. Have close to 30 cds.
Gong are one of my favorites. I've been listening to Gong since 1973 so I'm up and down with my listening time. Maybe once a month I'll listen to Gong.
Amon Duul II ...I have the first 3 on cd.
Cosmic Jokers, Neu, Ashra Tempel, Can..I've been listening to these bands since the mid to late 70s. At one time I owned everything on LP. Now I have most of it on CD.

☀️ Hey there, cosmic travellers! 🛸✨” Buckle up your
space boots and get ready to blast off into the psychedelic universe of
sound, because we're diving deep into the celestial vibes of Spacemen 3,
a band that shot onto the scene in 1982 like a comet streaking across
the night sky. 😆 🪐 Picture this: minimalist instrumentation swirling
around you like stardust, with repetitive structures that pull you into
an immersive listening experience. It feels like you're drifting in a
nebula while beautiful music tickles your ears. Their albums, such as
The Perfect Prescription (1987) and Playing with Fire (1989), are
shining examples of their signature style—each track is a portal to
another dimension where time bends and reality melts away. 👽
🌕
Now, let’s take a little trip back in time to August 2, 1986. 🌙
Imagine yourself in The Enterprise Pub at Chalk Farm station in London,
grooving to the sounds of Spacemen 3—featuring the legendary Pete "Sonic
Boom" Kember, Jason "Spaceman" Pierce, Pete "Bassman" Bain, and
Sterling "Rosco" Roswell. They were the cosmic cherry on top of a bill
that included other stellar acts like The Instinks, The Jackals, and
Kill Ugly Pop. Can you dig it? This performance was not just a concert;
it was an astral projection into the heart of rock ‘n’ roll!🎉🌌 It's
actually where the shoegaze era began. ⚛ So grab your tie-dye shirts and
peace signs because Spacemen 3 is here to take you on a wild ride
through the galaxy of sound!✨🚀

🌙 Imagine, my cosmic friends, combining the mind-bending riffs of
Hawkwind with the mystical vibrations of Gong's ethereal language, all
wrapped up in the raw, untamed energy of punk rock! What you get is a
sonic explosion that is none other than the groovy soundscape of Here
& Now.✨ Before embarking on their free tour in 1978, Here And Now
had a serendipitous encounter with the legendary John Peel at an
open-air gig in the magical realm of Meanwhile Gardens. 🌈✨ This cosmic
connection led to a radiant recording session for his radio show,
capturing the very essence and pulsating heart of Here And Now. The
vibrations from this Peel session resonate through time and space,
encapsulating their unique sound and spirit! 🚀💫
So, let your mind drift and your soul soar as you tune into this celestial harmony that transcends earthly boundaries! 🌠🌌

Good move , my favorite Gong's LP (With Live Gong issued on Virgin in ... 1975 I think and Continental Circus movie soundtrack, filmed in 1969/70 issued in 1972))
Fav track from You is still ' Isle of everywhere'
I have always been more impressed by their musical qualities than by their weirdo and wacky humor.
In the same genre I recommend the soundtrack of Jérôme Lapéroussaz 's movie Continental Circus. No synths or sequencers at that time, just glissando guitar and effects.. This soaring music announcing the flying teapots but that accompanied a film about the world of the independent earthly speed bikers. It is quite paradoxical isnt'it ?

Space rock bands I like a lot :
Ozric Tentacles ... always the same always different Noden Ictus : Ozric's related space/transe stuff Quantum Fantay : sort of Ozric made in Belgium Ship of Fools : Do they still exist ? Kosmogon : Mässan CD ( Nicklas Berg (from Anekdoten) project ) : like The tangerine dream I like ( Phaedra, Rubycon, Ricochet) My Brother the Wind ; also a Niklas Berg 's project , great free form stuff Causa Sui from Dannemark
By the way we labelled this kind of music as Space rock but
Sounds are made of material longitudinal waves travelling through physical mater ( air but also water, solid and other gases than air) In the void of space there is ..no atoms... no matter ... no waves so sound doesn't travel at all in space

I love Daevid Allen's Gong 1970-1974 + Shamal-Gong (not equally crazy 'bout the rest, I rather reach for Fish Rising over Gazeuze or Expresso II). You in particular is a desert island disc for me. A genuine trip and pyramid building masterpiece finale. But really I think all of Radio Gnome Invisible1-3 is my favorite trilogy in all of the arts. Regardless of shape, form or medium.
-This
21 minute space rock-epic underneath is recorded in 1971 is (to my
knowledge) the closest ever Gong* came to sound in studio compared to
how they come across from all the old live clips I've seen.
*I'm sure most of you know already, but in case some of You dont, this is peak era Gong in all but the name on the album cover:

Hi,
I'm not enjoying OT as much as I did 20 years ago. They kinda got a bit boring after John left, and Zia on the bass was not great ... just nice, but not very inventive or creative. When Brandi took over the bass, I thought it might be interesting, but she looked like she was still learning, and it was very basic for a while, and since then, the band has suffered. Basically it has gone slightly downhill, and not learned how to get creative and interesting ... probably too much Ed Wynne, and not enough anyone else.
The family band idea was interesting, but I think it also hurt the creativity ... it became all Ed and while Silas has definitely gotten better, in the process I think that Brandi suffered, and it appears that their relationship took a hit ... not sure.
The couple of shows on the net, are not that great. The bass player has the personality of a lamp post and the girl playing the flute, might be better, if they figured out how to make sure the flute can be heard ... and her dancing/prancing ... is ... well ... boring.
I think that OT best days, are behind them, and very far. Still love them, but sadly the replayes of old material is not even exciting. It was cleaner with Brandi.

🪐 Hailing from Sunderland, the vibrant port city nestled in Tyne and
Wear, England, Mr. Quimby's Beard has been captivating audiences since
their formation in 1983.✨ Over the years, this band has released three
studio albums and one live album, showcasing their unique sound and
artistic evolution. 🌀 They have performed countless gigs on both sides
of the Atlantic Ocean, often sharing the stage with legendary acts like
Hawkwind. 🚀
This particular video was crafted by the talented
member of Mr. Quimby's Beard, A.A. Pollard, who skillfully combined
various video imagery of the band captured during numerous gigs and
rehearsals. The music featured in this piece is drawn from their live
album titled "Mr. Quimby's Beard—Shrouded in Mystery (live 2001)" 🌠🎶

Oh, if you want to dive deeper into the cosmic soundscape that was GonG
in 1971 but live, just tune into the triple-LP concert album Glastonbury
Fayre: Various Artists. 🌈💫 This magical collection captures the
essence of a time when music was like a swirling vortex of colours and
sounds, and one whole side is dedicated to the Gong's mind-bending jam
titled "Glad Stoned Buried Fielding Flash & Fresh Fest Footprints In
My Memory." 🎶🌿 Suddenly, during Gong's celestial set, there was
even a power failure! But did that stop the cosmic travelers? No way!
They soared back into the stratosphere, and the gig continued like a
river flowing through a field of dreams. 🌊✨ Glastonbury Fayre was held
at the same time as the summer solstice, with the Pyramid Stage sitting
on the same ley line as Stonehenge and Glastonbury Abbey, and where free
spirits danced naked in the mud, embracing Mother Earth and letting
their souls trip out under the sun. 🌞🍃
And
let's not forget about Hawkwind! 🚀 They graced this festival with
their otherworldly presence too. Their unforgettable performance went
immortalised on this album with their track "Silver Machine And
Welcome," sending waves of spacey energy through every listener’s being.
🌠🔮
Then
there also were the Grateful Dead, bringing an American country-version of "space
rock" to life with "Dark Star," which stretches out for an epic 24
minutes! This track takes up one entire side of the Glastonbury Fayre
album, inviting you to float away on its cosmic currents. 🌀🎸 So if
you’re ready to embark on a journey through sound and spirit, grab that
album and let it take you on a ride through time and space! ✌️🌌💖

🌙🔮 In the ethereal expanse of the early 2000s, a U.S. ensemble known
as Secret Saucer emerged from the cosmic dust, weaving together the
sonic threads of various luminary acts. 🚀✨ This interstellar collective
is graced by the presence of Steve Taylor and Steve Hayes, two astral
voyagers who had previously traversed the musical galaxies alongside
legends like Nik Turner and Daevid Allen. 🛸 As they journey through
soundscapes, Secret Saucer conjures a mesmerising fusion of analogue
synthesisers and hypnotic rhythms, crafting an auditory experience that
not only pays tribute to the revered realms of classic space rock but
also boldly ventures into uncharted territories of sonic exploration.
🌌💫
With each pulsating beat and swirling synth, Secret
Saucer transports us to a dimension where melodies float like comets
across a starry sky, igniting our imaginations and expanding our
consciousness.🎆🌀🎇

Hi,
I'm glad to see this here. The Grateful Dead deserves to be mentioned on the history of "progressive" music, and while we concentrate on Echoes, CTTE and a few other things, some material like this one ... gets left behind, because it is American and not of English birth ... since they invented the world!
it's even sadder still that much of PA has gone to the "song" definition of "progressive" and "prog" and made the definition designed for the folks here, a bit left behind and ignored. Some of the materials/ideas mentioned in the definition exist in a lot of other musics out there, thus making the idea, of a guitar solo, redundant ... or the change of chords, even worse.
But extending a piece of music, and making it work, is something only the greats can do well, and The Grateful Dead deserve to be mentioned alongside of many of these ... besides one really important thing ... they didn't have to be super loud to get your attention, and that "solo" was not present by itself, so the guitarist looks like ... some dog out there!
The design of most excellent music is not about the solo itself ... it's about that solo being a part of the whole thing and kinda working itself in and out, without the ego/media attention ... and the GD had that in abundance.
Some bands were louder and noisier ... but The Grateful Dead gave meaning to the QUALITY of the music they played ... THEY HAD THE BEST SOUND SYSTEM OF ANY BAND OUT THERE. While others got louder, the GD got cleaner and prettier to enjoy ... now you know why so much of "pigprog" does not attract me at all ... you don't need the "solo", or the "attention", unless your music is far less valuable and important, and the loud part and solo makes it seem more important.
Also far out ... that GONG piece ... I have to get that CD now!

From my current town of Kettering, the (now defunct) band 'Thee Telepaths' released https://theetelepaths.bandcamp.com/album/the-velvet-night" rel="nofollow - 'The Velvet Night' in 2019. I found it at Rocket Records about a year after the stopped playing; Still sealed, creased and a little beaten on the sleeve but cheap enough to take a punt on.
3 fuzzed-out, spacey suites with a 70's garage rock vibe, listed on their Bandcamp as the separate parts, but on the album sleeve just as 'Alpha Parts I-V (19:45), Epsilon Parts I-III (11:10), Delta Parts I-IV (11:09).'

How you conduct your own threads is your business. But knowing that you've spent maybe an average of five minutes or something for each of these albums - the ratings of complete discographies in other peoples threads borders on spamming in my opinion. It's like postulating your opinion of a novel after having read the first, tenth, thirtieth, ninetieth and two hundredth page. You do as you please, but I think it's a little unfair to the creators and artists.

Isn't Naxatras' "Waves" crashing onto the shores of our eardrums
as if we're transported to a sea on a distant planet 🌌 ? In this magical ✨ version, the addition of a string quartet elevates
the spacey mid-tempo instrumental to an otherworldly realm 🎻 while
conjuring a beautifully haunting atmosphere. To me, the soaring strings
and haunting guitar riffs 🎸 evoke imaginary the undulating waves of
another planet's ocean 🌊, as if the music itself has become that sentient,

2020: Aries - Because of My Fears - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ-_mRulzvY" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ-_mRulzvY
ARIES Ram-bam-ba-lamb! It's written in the stars that Aries are the most exciting thing to happen in Greece since the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, when the Persians defeated the Spartans, winning 2-1 after extra time. You don't need to climb Mount Olympus to meet the prog gods, because the tremendous trio of titans are all right here on this one amazing album. This is Space Rock, Jim, but not as we know it, going boldly where no Space Rock album has ever gone before (split infinitives permitting!). "Because of My Fears" is light years ahead of any Space Rock album I know of, and where you'd have to travel to the distant galaxy of Andromeda to hear anything even remotely approaching this magnitude of brilliance. Aries shines as brightly as a distant Quasar - the brightest object in the known universe. The album is one long continuous five-part suite of music, so set the controls for the heart of the Sun, power up into interstellar overdrive at max factor five and prepare for a fantastic voyage of a lifetime in the best 43 minutes you've ever spent outside of the bedroom. It's a stellar stunner! What REALLY sets this fabulous album apart though, is the beautiful siren-song call of the charming female vocalist. After all, when was the last time you ever heard a female lead singer on a Space Rock album? Probably never. The pounding percussive power of the Duracel drummer is worthy of a mention too, sounding like a battering ram with an artillery barrage of sound the like of which we haven't heard since the furious fusillade of cannon fire at the climax of Tchaikovsky's triumphal 1812 Overture. And let's not forget the incredible guitarist either, whose psychedelic, purple-haze freak-outs would make Jimi Hendrix jealous. This stunning Space Rock extravaganza is a sonic blast from beginning to end and one of the most electrifying albums you'll ever hear this side of the Milky Way galaxy. Ad Astra!
Meanwhile, Russell Grant reveals what the stars hold in their heavenly little handbag for those of us born under the sign of Aries.

Question for PA - how exactly do we define "space rock?"
I've been a fan of "space rock" for decades without really understanding its meaning. I hail from Chicago, which was once called the "space rock capital of the world." Touring space-rock groups like Hawkwind found a welcoming audience, and we had a very nice homegrown space rock movement with bands like Stratosled.
My interpretation of space-rock has been that it is highly dependent upon synthesizers, and I often would refer people to albums like "Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream. However, there is a great variety of music under the banner of space-rock.
Thoughts, please?

Space Rock is a guitar-driven genre characterised by its hypnotic,
repetitive rhythms that create an immersive auditory experience,
complemented by intricate electric guitar riffs and soloing and ethereal
synths, resulting in a soundscape that is often both whimsical and

🌠 Let's take a groovy ride back to 1977 when the music was pure
magic! ✨ Igra Staklenih Perli, a 🇷🇸 Serbian band that floated through
Belgrade's underground scene during that year, gifted us with some truly
stellar sounds. 🌈 This live track is called "Lyzzard Square" 🦎 which
is nothing short of a cosmic explosion! 🚀 This track is a kaleidoscope
of space-rock vibes—original, exciting, and oh-so-trippy! 💫 The audio
quality might not be crystal clear like the stars on a moonlit night,
but who cares? It doesn't bother at all 'cause it features a dreamy and
floatin' synths 🎹 , great guitar riffs 🎸, and thunderous bass
sound! It's all about the space-rock journey from the year of Punk that
can even be heard in this live recording! 🎶✨
A devoted fan
crafted the visuals accompanying this celestial tune, a true testament

Question for PA - how exactly do we define "space rock?"
Hi,
Kinda thought about it all night, believe it or not.
I never thought of anything is this or that ... other than "jazz", "rock music" and "classical" ... and the rest ... fits into the area "who cares".
I think one of the problems of classifying anything and them compartmentalizing it into the corner of the closet, makes it "better" and easier to find and discuss. The fact of the matter is that this is an idea, and not exactly true, since tomorrow yo want to do something else with your music, and you will NEVER be defined or spoken about your own music, like it was described and prescribed.
IF, the idea of "space rock" made any sense, a lot of the stuff in the early Fillmore's and then UFO's and other places would be listed ... but no ... we still think that The Grateful Dead is just another garage band, that was not creative and inventive, and above all, based on the notations ... were doing REAL MUSIC, instead of just four-square notes and chords. Listen to DD describe it ... even he was amazed at the notes and abilities of the players involved ... we refuse to give credit to any of them! Oh, excuse me ... Eight Miles High ... is space rock, specially if you can find the long versions, starting with Golden Earring! It was once mentioned that the Fillmore did not have stage space for keyboards ... which allows for guitars to have their fun!!! But in Europe, keyboards were better appreciated and used ... and given a lot more credit for the ambience created.
Originally, I think it was "the trip", and it didn't matter how it was done. You had Iron Butterfly with an organ, and the Fillmore's with guitars, as an example. Their main drive and idea, was tripping, since it is thought (and actually believed) that every one was a moron and were stoned senseless, when you know that some folks would not exactly live that way at all or took their musical knowledge for granted.
I think, that the idea "changed" when the music all of a sudden was about SPACE, and you got to remember that in the late 60's and early 70's were the MOON years ... and lyrics that had any kind of mention about space, helped take it away from simply the TRIP that was before, where the subject matter was not important.
I tend, to get out of the room, the minute someone mentions "space rock" ... basically because the idea has become ridiculous and not even well defined, and on top of it, many musicians are simply making noise from the start, which does not exactly is considered "space rock" ... we don't look at Faust as that at all, but if you get stoned (as many if us did way back when!) and listened to those early albums, they were trippy and far out ... and you didn't worry about it being space rock, or space noise, or just sounds being stretched and distorted via a new synth. I guess that means that Ax Gernrich is an idiot making all that noise and doing a really good impression of Jimi ... but prog/progressive music lovers will never put on those albums, specially the live ones with the totally out of this world noise from the guitar! Sorry Ax, we don't like your style of space music!
The issue, that hurts is seeing a lot of people call this thing as "space rock" and the lyrics, themselves have nothing to do with "space" (here there or anywhere) at all. And because something were extended, we think it was the root of "space rock" ... one example that is really off key, is one of the samples posted, or early Hawkwind, and in fact they duplicated this later in "Electric Tepee", since in essence, it was just a far out powow that took place as the band got setup with some of them or not would not even be important, but all of a sudden, a drum/noise circle, becomes a band, known as Hawkwind, and they never sounded like that ... except for that bit at the end of the "Electric Tepee" album, which rock fans, specially progressive rock music, or prog rock music fans, do not like, because they are not sure why that is even there ... and we having got to the part, yet, where we have, more than likely, mis-represented what the band was about! Hawkwind or not!

According to TD members 3/4 of Encore were collage of live tracks overdubbed in studio. The fourth track is an almost complete studio track ( with elements from Oedipus Tyrannus a TD opus composed between Phaedra and Rubycon) (same statement for Ricochet whose side one is a studio work with added reactions of the crowd borrowed from a Croydon (UK) gig )...

Hi,
Saw this tour in LA at the Greek Theater, with the lights and magick of Laserium in the show. The picture at the back of the album is the trees in the back of the open air theater, "on fire" from all the lazers ... it crackled, fizzled and had everyone going wow. Of the 4 times I saw TD, this was the best one, although the original first tour at the Santa Monica Civic was excellent and probably more exciting since it was their first time here. But "Encore" is the far out one, because "I was there" and saw it all ... totally far out and a night to remember forever.

In the ether of the space-rock cosmos, where sound waves ripple through
the cosmos like shooting stars, we find ourselves reflecting on the
legacy of the early UFO. 🚀🌌 These pioneers charted a course into
uncharted territories, steering away from keys and diving headfirst into
the heavier realms of space-rock. 🚀🎸 Their sonic explorations have
not only left an indelible mark on music history but have also inspired a
new generation of cosmic voyagers who continue to push the boundaries
of sound today. 🌠🎶 Among these modern-day astral travellers is the
🇫🇷French trio SLIFT, whose music resonates with a cosmic energy that
is as vibrant as a supernova! 🌟💫 With their heavy riffs, SLIFT crafts
tunes that transport listeners to distant galaxies where time bends and
reality shifts. 🛸 Their live performances are drawing fans into a
whirlpool of sound that feels both exhilarating and transcendent. 🎤🌌
Their
15-minute performance of "Citadel on a Satellite/Hyperion," which was
recorded at Mix'art Myrys, Toulouse, in 2020, is one of their
interstellar journey's most unforgettable moments that are filmed and
saved in a time capsule. Listening to this version makes one feel as
though floating with this amazing trio, who seems to continue where UFO
left off with space rock in the early seventies, through space on the
tail of a comet, despite nearly total absence of synths! ☄️ 🌠🎸✨

1971: Nektar - Journey to the Centre of the Eye - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kynjoDkG1vw" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kynjoDkG1vw
NEKTAR Achtung! Nektar are NOT German, despite the band being formed in Munich at the tail end of the 1960's, and despite them being based in Germany for much of their career. No, this band are as British as tea and crumpets and a game of croquet on an English summer lawn. Nektar have had a long and illustrious career, with many changes of line-up along the way, and it all began with this spacey album, the intriguingly-titled " Journey to the Centre of the Eye" (1971). The band are still going strong 13 albums and nearly 50 years later with their latest album "The Other Side" due for release in 2020. This album consists of 13 tracks, although it's really just one long spacey suite of music as there are no noticeable breaks between the songs. Let's travel back in time now to the halcyon days of 1971 and take a "Journey to the Centre of the Eye."
The album opens appropriately enough with "Prelude". This brief 1-minute prelude features spooky, swirling sound effects and mysterious noises to put you in the mood for some classic Space Rock. We're in Hawkwind territory here, so hold on tight and prepare for an ""Astronaut's Nightmare". Strangely, the opening to this song reminds one of a Beatles' number, but that first impression doesn't last for long. This is pretty impressive stuff with the keyboard player going hell for leather on the Hammond organ and with the singer sounding like he's on some far-out psychedelic acid trip. The guitarist is no slouch either as he fires off some stunning guitar leads, not to mention the drummer, who's pounding away on his kit in true Space Rock tradition. It's freaky, it's spacey, it's mysterious, but most important of all, this is great music. Prepare to be amazed! If you can't "Countenance" that, then how about this, because this is Track 3: "Countenance". The pace is now slowed down somewhat with some very pleasant and laid back organ playing. Don't be fooled though, because that was just the opening and there's a wild psychedelic guitarist on the loose and he's here to show you what he's made of with some good solid riffing. The song ascends triumphantly into a tremendously uplifting crescendo of sound to take you into Space Rock heaven. We now arrive at "The Nine Lifeless Daughters of the Sun" which is presumably about the nine planets of the solar system, although there's nothing lifeless about the Earth, or indeed this instrumental rip-roaring organ-driven number. Onwards now at Warp Factor 5 to Track No. 5 "Warp Oversight". There are lots of spacey plinky-plonky noises to be heard in this eerie number with a Hawkwind-style spacey rhythm phasing in and out of the mix. It's all very atmospheric and mysterious, but no less than you'd expect from a classic Space Rock album. We're now almost halfway through our journey as "The Dream Nebula I" closes out Side One. Just lie back and enjoy because this is beautiful music, and there's more to come too as "The Dream Nebula II" continues on the opening of Side Two of the album. "It's All in the Mind" is up next, although it's not all in the mind that this is a great song and a superb album overall. And now onto "Burn Out My Eyes", the longest track on the album, running at nearly 8 minutes long. Again, this is another song that's designed to carry you into orbit on a rocket- propelled blast of Hammond organ, wild guitar riffs and a powerful singer soaring on a wave of emotion. Onwards now to "Void of Vision", a manic free-for-all as the Hammond organist takes off on a flight of fancy, throwing caution to the wind. Track 11 "Pupil of the Eye" gallops along at impressive speed, firing on all cylinders with a pounding rhythm and the vocalist giving it his all and more besides, in the style of David Byron of Uriah Heep. "Look Inside Yourself" now for the penultimate song on the album with our fantastic journey nearly at an end. It's a short 1-minute barnstormer of a song which takes us into "Death of the Mind" to close out the album. The grand finale to the album is a bombastic and grandiose song full of triumphal pomp and ceremony to conclude this superb album in fine style. The journey ends, but this was just the beginning for Nektar!
This marvellous album of classic Space Rock has really stood the test of time and it's sure to delight fans of Hawkwind. The album sounds as fresh today nearly 50 years on, as it did at the time of its release when Space Rock was just taking off, way back in 1971. "Journey to the Centre of the Eye" deserves a treasured place in any Prog-Rock/Space Rock music lover's collection. With a debut album as impressive as this, Nektar's later albums have got to be well-worth a listen too.

THE FLOW Go with The Flow! A chilled-out band from Greece's third city of Patras, in the far north of the Peloponnesian peninsula. The Flow first streamed into view back in 1999, with their one and only album of spacey, mellow moods having an Incubation period of four years. Their hypnotic music is as chilled out as a daiquiri cocktail on ice with a slice of lemon on a sun-kissed Mediterranean beach with the waves gently lapping at your feet and with a dog gently lapping at your ice cream. The music is as delicately pleasing as a fragile Grecian urn with the heavily-accented vocalist only adding to the delightful Greek charm of this modern Krautrock classic. "Incubation" features swirling waves of laid-back rhythms gently ebbing and flowing like the tide, together with lashings of cool and breezy psychedelic grooves. And so, if you've ever wanted to sail the Aegean Sea without leaving the comfort of your armchair and you're in the mood for a sun-dazed, psychedelic haze of in-and-out phasing that sounds so amazing, then you'll surely have a pleasant voyage - and don't forget the sunscreen!

HIERONYMUS DREAMSpace Rock's coming home! Nostos is the dominant theme in Homer's Odyssey, where a Greek hero returns home from an epic journey, including battling in The Trojan War, being shipwrecked, and heroically dealing with various other trials and tribulations along the way. Nostos was the Arnold Schwarzenegger of his day, dispatching his enemies with suitably heroic aplomb whilst no doubt delivering sardonic one-liners along the way, something along the lines of "Tha epistretso.", for the classical Greek scholars amongst us. Hieronymus Dream are an anonymous quintet of psychedelic shamans from Rhodes Island, the largest of the fifteen (not twelve) islands of the Greek Dodecanese - in stark contrast with the smallest US State of Rhode Island, which is not really an island at all. The name of the band draws obvious inspiration from Dutch painter Hieronymus Bosch, who's noted for his horrifying, nightmarish depictions of Hell - so not the kind of paintings you'd want to hang up on your bedroom wall. Hieronymus Dream's first EP "Clairvoyance" was predictably followed by their first full-length album: "Nostos" the album we have here. The intriguing album cover, featuring a dramatic image of a giant snail wrapped around the thin atmosphere of the Earth, gives some indication of the weird and wonderful music contained within, which incidentally, was released on the Weird Beard label - although you don't have to be a weirdy-beardy vegan type to enjoy the spaced-out, psychedelic grooves on this cosmic dream-ride though the final frontier of space. So stock up with dilithium crystals, set phasers to stun and prepare to energize, as the astounding sounds and amazing music of Hieronymus Dream take you on the best space trip around the universe since Hawkwind first went In Search of Space back in 1971 - and you don't even have to leave the comfort of your space-rocking chair. Oh, and don't worry, the hypnotic music of Hieronymus Dream is nothing like the sonic shock wave of Hawkwind's pounding and pulsating music. No, "Nossos" is more healing and soothing than an hour spent reclining in Dr. McCoy's sickbay, so enjoy this pleasure cruise through the inner regions of the erogenous zones and just lie back and think of Greece.

🌌🚀 The most cosmic of the
non-space-rock records that otherwise belong to the genre of symphonic
prog, in my humble opinion, is the debut album of the 🇭🇺Hungarian band
Solaris, "Marsbéli Krónikák" ("Martian Chronicles") from 1983. That
record stands out like a shimmering star in the night sky. "Martian
Chronicles" is not just a collection of symphonic prog tunes; it's an
interstellar journey that invites listeners to float among the stars and
dance on the red sands of Mars!🔴 🌠 Imagine embarking on a cosmic
voyage, where each note is a comet streaking across your consciousness.
☄️ "Martian Chronicles" weaves intricate melodies and celestial
harmonies that transport you to distant galaxies. 💫 The lush
orchestration envelops you like a nebula, while the rhythmic pulses echo
the heartbeat of distant worlds. 🌀 As you drift through this sonic
tapestry, you can almost feel the gravitational pull of Mars drawing you
closer to its mysteries. 🔴🪐🌌 💫 Each track is like a chapter in
an epic space-saga, inviting listeners to ponder their place in the
universe while tapping into their inner Martian spirit! 👽 🛸 "Martian
Chronicles" captured the imaginations of prog fans and sparked dreams
of Martians dancing under alien moons. The music flows like stardust,
igniting visions of intergalactic adventures and cosmic encounters! 🌙
🎶🌠 But lo and behold, it wasn't until the shimmering year of 1995,
after the celestial vibrations of Solaris graced the stage at Progfest

The band played the epic from the album, titled "The Martian Chronicles

Fortunately, great footage that captures that

JADE WARRIOR have always been there lurking in the background, like a silent samurai, poised to strike with a new album release. This three-piece British band have been around since 1970 but never quite made it to the "big league", although their exotic melodic prog albums are every bit as good as some of the more well-known prog bands of the time. They emerged from the Psychedelic Rock band, July, who released one self-titled album in 1968. Jade Warrior released seven albums during the proggy 1970's, including:- "Jade Warrior" (1971); "Released" (1971); "Last Autumn's Dream" (1972); "Floating World" (1974); "Waves" (1975); "Kites" (1976); & "Way of the Sun" (1978). They followed that studio album up with the compilation album "Reflections" (1979), released at a time when Jade Warrior were taking a long six year hiatus before coming back with the "Horizen" album in 1984. Jade Warrior's first three albums were released on the Prog-Rock Vertigo label, before switching to Chris Blackwell's Island Records in 1974. In total, the band have recorded fourteen studio albums throughout their long career with their most recent album "NOW" released in 2008. The line-up for this first self-titled album consisted of Jon Field (flutes, percussion); Tony Duhig (guitars); & Glyn Havard (bass, vocals). The album is notable for not including a drummer in this first line-up. Let's step into the mysterious oriental world of Jade Warrior now and check out the album.
Getting the album underway, we're on the move with "The Traveller", opening to the sound of a gentle acoustic guitar and floating flute with a percussionist lightly tapping away on the bongos. The exotic music conjures up images of some faraway land in the mystical east. Wait a minute though - what's this!? Leaping out of nowhere like a sleeping samurai comes a fuzzy electric guitarist with a soaring spacey solo. This is Psychedelic/Space Rock like you've never heard it played before. This is no gentle Japanese tea ceremony in the style of Marlon Brando's "Teahouse of the August Moon". No, this is a soaring sonic nirvana of fuzzy acid guitar, designed to exhilarate and elevate the mind and body into a state of euphoria - and you don't even need any psychedelic substances to get high. All you need is this emotionally elevating music. Floating gently back down to Earth now, comes the Blues-Rock number "A Prenormal Day at Brighton". This song is no laid-back "Bell-Bottom Blues" though. No, this is a spirited, toe-tapping Blues-Rock number with attitude, which is all the more surprising considering Jade Warrior didn't include a drummer in their first line-up. Instead, we have a percussionist pounding away on whatever he can lay his hands on with the fuzzy psychedelic guitarist taking us right back to those halcyon days gone by when hippy guys and gals wore flowers in their hair. We're in deepest darkest Africa for the next song "Masai Morning". It's all very ethnic in the opening with the sound of a floating flute and what sounds like an African tribesman pounding away on the percussion. It sounds like the kind of tribal music you might hear on a wild African safari, or if your budget doesn't quite stretch that far, watching old repeats of "Daktari". First impressions aren't always right though, because the wild guitarist is just waiting in the wings to give us another dynamic burst of some fuzzy guitar riffing. This is energetic ethnic music that's best listened to on a verandah with a glass of jungle juice in your hand as you watch herds of wildebeest galloping across the savannah. Failing that, you could just lie back at night with the lights off and dream of being on safari amid the breath-taking scenery of Kenya, ala Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep) in "Out of Africa". Floating into view now comes "Windweaver", a beautifully laid-back mellow groove with some super soar-away guitar and flute soloing. This is gorgeous music that floats along like a cool gentle breeze. Just lie back and let "Windweaver" weave it's magical spell on you. The music segues nicely into "Dragonfly Day" to close out Side One. It's the longest song on the album at nearly eight minutes long. This is another cool and gentle groove with the ethnic sound of the tom-toms, acoustic guitar and feathery flute carrying us away to some warm and distant far-eastern land. It's psychedelic transcendental music to lay back and meditate to in a passionate "Purple Haze" of sound. The music is very much in the style of that other well-known psychedelic and spiritual band, Quintessence. This music is moody and magnificent!
Moving swiftly along through Side Two now, so as not to get hopelessly bogged down in a long review comes "Petunia", a back-to-basics raw Blues-Rock number, reminding us that this is a British Rock album we're listening to here and not some multi-ethnic tribe of musicians from Asia and Africa. Next on the line is "Telephone Girl", an upbeat and uplifting wild psychedelic guitar groove with the percussionist passionately pounding away on the bongo drums. This is a tribal psychedelic revival that's foot-stompingly good. Next up is the bizarrely-titled "Psychiatric Sergeant", a fluty number which is very reminiscent of Jethro Tull. The flautist is in full-flight on this energetic song, which immediately conjures up an image of Ian Anderson standing on one leg in typical merry minstrel fashion. Next, we're taking a "Slow Ride", a light and delicate acoustic guitar and fluty instrumental melody. This leads us gently into the closing number and the highlight of the album, "Sundial Song". This song is a veritable potpourri of exotic music, opening with a flawless flute and gentle percussion, followed by an aggressive samurai thrust of heavy guitar riffing, and then effortlessly transposing back into a marvellous mellifluous floating wave of sound for the magnificent conclusion.
This stunning debut album from Jade Warrior has it all! It's a spicy multi-ethnic cocktail of exotic instrumentation that's a little bit off the beaten track. If you're in the mood to spice up your life with some exotic and experimental non-western music that's not on the usual tourist trail, then take a psychedelic trip back in time with this superb album of musical exploration. This is a timeless album of intoxicating melodic prog that improves with age, just like a fine vintage wine.

'WEirding' by Astra ia also great....I have Eclectic Measure by Hypnos but been a while since I played it.
As you know AStra turned into Birth and 'Born' is also very nice though I like the vibe better on the Astra lps.

I was initially planning to choose just one favourite album by each Space Rock artist, but the temptation was just too great to go overboard with Pink Floyd when there's so many stellar albums to choose from, although The Division Bell would've been my #1 choice.

For the die-hard fans of Berlin School 🌀, though that
stuff sounds like space-rock 🪐, I'd like to recommend the records by
🇩🇪German guitarist Günter Schickert. 🌌🎸 He was initially a roadie
and assistant to Klaus Schulze, and that is how he got into electronic
music. 🚀✨ He released two solo albums in the 1970s. "Samtvogel" was
released in 1975, and four years later the album "Überfällig" followed,
initially released by Sky Records and then re-released in 2012 by the
record label Bureau B. 🌠📀 If you listen to the music on "Überfällig,"
you inevitably think you're hearing a lot of synthesiser music on the
opening track "Puls," but it's actually guitars that you're hearing
here, supported by other sounds such as bubbling, wind, children's
voices, and beyond. 🎶🌌 It sounds really exciting and is very
repetitive, hypnotic, and cosmic indeed! 🌌🔊

I think OHEAD and Tangerine Dream (particularly their older stuff) are prime exemplars of space rock, even though TD is classified as prog electronic.
Although they have some spacey moments, I don't really consider Gong to be space rock, and Hawkwind is more psychedelic than space. I'm somewhat perturbed that PA puts space rock and psychedelic together in the same genre, as they are very different in my mind.

Hi,
I think your idea is not right ... take away Michael Moorcock, and we likely would not give a damn about the whole thing, and consider it stupid. And Hawkwind, did try to get rid of Michael Moorcock, and finally was able to do so (got him back with Warrior ... ), but the idea, and thought of it not associated with "space" seems to be something that most fans do not appreciate much.
All it takes is "Hall of the Mountain Grill" and then "Astounding Sounds/Amazing Music" to realize that there was a lot more to Hawkwind than "space" that we refuse to let go. Both the long cuts in AS/AM are not about "space" at all ... and this might be one of the reasons why some folks kinda quit Hawkwind by that time, as Reefer Madness is seriously anti-dope, and Steppenwolf is also very serious about our doped up ideas about mind and body! Just like the book! The "magic theater" is the idea, not the reality!
And we think that the "space" illusion of it all is better and more important ... please stop being a stoned kid showing your youth. . Hawkwind, by 1976 and such had grown tired of the space idea. Nik Turner, kinda took it with him some and created some nice stuff until he passed away, but ... but ... but ... it also means that anything stated and said was not important, because the idea of "space" (influenced by the moon events at Nasa and 2001, the film) was more important.
Maybe if you had seen 2001 at the Cinerama Dome and the large stoned crowd, you would have gotten a better idea of it all, and I think that Hawkwind had grown up some ... beyond just being a stony farm band!

Hi,
This, if anything, shows how much Simon House was valuable to Hawkwind, and helped make the music flow a lot more than we give it credit for. Simon House first appeared in "Hall of the Mountain Grill" and specially in the first side of the LP, made that album special in just a few tracks.
If you check the lyrics, in many ways this is about how they see a lot of folks thinking about Hawkwind ... and their desire to let go of that illusion ...
...
So you think the time is past, The life you lead will always last Chaotic fusion's of your soul, Down below that rocky knoll Through the clouds an open sky, The wind flows through your watering eyes The sounds are pitched to draw you On your never ending journey On The edge of time, The edge of time, The edge of time
(... and I probably would add a monkey saying ... you are stoned ... you are stoned ... a la 2001!!!)

I run a radio program in Belgium (progscopie) and our last show was about cosmic sixties: so space rock but made in the sixties. I'll make another one next thursday as we still have plenty to present.
Any suggestion of titles that are space rock AND from the sixties (like Interstellar Overdrive and 3rd Stone from the sun which are for me good examples).
Thanks

Mort Garson may have been the first composer to create occult albums using the Moog Synthesizer...but with a distinctive style regarding mechanical rhythms, poly chords, and oddball signature lines that revolved around a theme and subject matter of the occult. This was pursued in 1969 by Beaver And Krause, but only in a few pieces featured on the album Ragnarok. "CIRCLE X" being the closest with similarities to Mort Garson.
The idea was to create a entire album on the occult using the Moog Synthesizer and Mort Garson was the most accomplished at that. There were others such as Ruth White and her 7 Trumps Of The Tarot and Pinions...which is very dark but somewhat differs from Black Mass and The Unexplained.
Keith Emerson in the early 70s was writing dark pieces in ELP such as The Barbarian but his usage of the Moog Synthesizer to create dark music was quite different from Garson.
On a personal level I observed keyboardists in the early 70s who were Electronic or had played in Progressive Rock bands reproducing some of the sound and style heard on Black Mass and Perhaps it's just Garson's essence and his overall influence.
Cds I have:
The Wozard Of Is Black Mass The Unexplained Plantasia Sacred Bones ( compilation of unreleased material) Journey To The Moon And Beyond.
