Most progressive music contains at least some amount of "cultural appropriation". Who should be the arbiter of how much is too much? I'd vote for "nobody", or in other words: Stop taking offence. Grow a thicker skin. Don't just preach liberalism, practice it. Instead of demanding tolerance in an ill-advised way (which actually is the exact opposite of tolerance, or at least leads to it via a slippery slope), practice it by tolerating other people doing things that you don't agree with.

And honestly, it's mostly fine. Let's take Gabriel era Genesis. In this kind of case you're portraying a character, you're telling a story. It's all tropes. But, the sheer philosophy behind hip-hop and rap is to do the opposite. The rapper doesn't use someone else's lyrics and the rapper doesn't pretend to be someone else, like they're playing a character unless it's super obviously stated! Example: 1. An American rapper has a song about living in a ghetto and gun control. 2. A Polish rapper has a song about living in a ghetto and gun control. Option 2 looks like someone's copying a style without choosing not to adopt the elements that sound out of place and out of character when you change the setting from the US to Poland. ^ Oh good, I'm glad I missed the point. I understand you don't like - I probably wouldn't like it either - but at least they try to create something; that goes with hits and misses. I honestly don't think the misses are because of the language or culture, but maybe more a lack of talent, creativity or otherwise. There are many examples where the mix of different cultural elements (musical styles, for example) create something worthwhile. I posted a track by Orange Blossom in the latest Interactive poll which is an example of that, I think. (I cannot give examples of Gangsta rap, because that is not a genre I like...).

Yes. I agree. It can absolutely be done with taste! That's pretty much how a lot of fusion musical genres all around the world came into existence! Just do it wisely.

^ Indeed. And when you talked about Hip Hop and I referred to Orange Blossom it actually made me think of this track (that whole album is, IMO, a wonderful example of a mix between rock, Arabic music, electro, Hip Hop and still other elements... No Gangsta Rap, though ;) ): |

It is sort of a record. The last time urination was used in a post was in 2006: Once in a blue moon I've mentioned farts or poops in the Prog Music Lounge, but generally I've kept that in the Just for Fun section. I try to behave. It's not easy.

The New Decemberists album is the finest they've ever put out, not sure if that's a hot take, since it's new, but Joan in the Garden alone is amazing

KC best album is Islands and everything after it except for Red is not that good.
Trespass is only surpassed by Selling England by the Pound for Genesis. A Time and a Word is among the top three Yes albums and the orchestra was a good addition to their music. The last really good Floyd album is Wish you were here, the rest is just ok. Gentle Giant would be better if they kept their experimental nature of their debut. Porcupine Tree is only remotely prog until 1999 or 2000 Family's real gem is Family Entertainment All the Magma output is very good except from MDK Most of the 90s and newer prog bands missed the point because what was great about Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, KC, GG, Tull, etc was that it mmixed great instrumental passages, complexity and musical prowess with sing along choruses and humming-to melodies. |

^I agree that Time and a Word is sorely under-appreciated.
On the other hand, I am very intrigued when bands like Bubblemath or Panzerballett create melodies that are difficult to hum along to, and they are from the 21st century. So perhaps you missed their point, or their point simply doesn't appeal to you. |

The Gentle Giant records "The Missing Piece" and "Giant For A Day" are fantastic, and I give more time to listen to them than their earlier material (except for Free Hand which is my all time fave of theirs).

On the one hand, that's an overwhelming number of bands, "most." On the other hand, there are both many bands that adhere to that formula, and there are many that choose to forego it. |

^Yeah, as I was saying above, either widen your search, or just admit it comes down to taste. These broad generalizations based on personal bias really do a disservice to people making really killer music out there.
