These two albums always get compared for the reasons given, but the music is so different it's difficult to chose. Depends how you like your music. Personally it's SB.

V by Spock's Beard for me. 
This is the record that jump started my massive interest in prog beyond things like Rush and Yes. Ironically, the first time I heard it I did not like it at all. It sat on my CD shelf for about a year and a half. On a whim, I decided to try it again and absolutely loved it. I then went out and bought the rest of the SB catalog.

Oddly, my initial experience with one of my absolute favourite metal albums, which is the other V here, is quite similar. I didn't like the sound and it seemed like I would never listen to it again. But, I had few new CDs then, so I decided to try listening to it again. I warmed to it a bit. After multiple listens, it literally became one of my favourite albums ever (it still is so).
