I noticed this recently, Those two albums have a lot in common.

*Both Released in the same year
*Both have the same name
*Both have almost the same cover

Now if I go even further:

*Both are the bands' fifth album
*Both are in the same length

Plus both are amazing! Big smile

Now, about the music...... completely different.

Agh close, my opinion could change upon revisiting Symphony X, but i'm giving it to the Beard this time around. At the End of the Day is really just a perfect song, it does not feel as long as it is and every transition, solo, and melody just feels so on the money and seamless, lots of other really good songs on there as well. Great symphony x album as well, Evolution is one of my favorite prog metal openers.

also, weren't both released on the same label? Off the top of my head I think its Metalblade records

SyX... Their V is my all time favourite album... It actually and drastically changed how I see music. I would've called it the best album ever too, if it weren't for some obvious Dream Theater influences in the album. I still sometimes call it so though, to attract attention and vex people. LOL

SB's V is excellent too, though.

Spock's Beard cause I like their style more.
BTW I've just watched "Making of V" and really enjoyed it.

Symphony X all the way. They're my favorite progressive metal band (not tech/extreme). Spock's Beard never did it for me.

I will say, I think at the very least Symphony X crushes SB in the vocal department

I will abstain from voting as I love both of these albums with an equal weight, but for different reasons.
In my world, this is a tie.
Thanks, yogev, for initiating this particular poll.
I'll be interested in how it plays out!

I noticed this when they both first came out (which was right around the same time). I was 30 years old at the time. Anyway, there are also similiarities between Genesis lamb lies down on broadway and Spock's Beard's snow album.

I've actually never heard that Symphony X album (so no vote) but I do have the Odessey which is ok.

These two albums always get compared for the reasons given, but the music is so different it's difficult to chose. Depends how you like your music. Personally it's SB.

V by Spock's Beard for me.
This is the record that jump started my massive interest in prog beyond things like Rush and Yes. Ironically, the first time I heard it I did not like it at all. It sat on my CD shelf for about a year and a half. On a whim, I decided to try it again and absolutely loved it. I then went out and bought the rest of the SB catalog.

Oddly, my initial experience with one of my absolute favourite metal albums, which is the other V here, is quite similar. I didn't like the sound and it seemed like I would never listen to it again. But, I had few new CDs then, so I decided to try listening to it again. I warmed to it a bit. After multiple listens, it literally became one of my favourite albums ever (it still is so).
