I actually wasn’t sure how serious the OP was. None of the songs in the OP seemed at all dark to me, so I wasn’t surprised when people started posting actual dark prog.
If I put my music upon a light-dark spectrum, the songs in the OP are definitely at the light end. So, I can definitely understand people either assuming the OP was a bit of a joke, and having fun; or, as Ian has said, after other suggestions that were equally (not) dark were made, having some fun with the topic. From the title of the post alone, before reading the OP, my mind definitely went towards much of the (actually) dark prog suggested (either seriously or in fun), and the only reason I never posted suggestions of my own, was because I wasn’t sure whether this was a joke post or not. 🤷🏻♂️ |

Nothing wrong with having fun. The OP gave examples of songs they considered dark prog and yet most replies were way off the mark. If indeed it was a joke post, no prob, otherwise I think it's rude. It's common for some to not read anything but the topic and then respond. I find it frustrating and not helpful. But maybe I'm only joking and having fun?

Yup, but if you can't stand the dark, stay out of the closet (or keep the door open) ![]() If it's symphonic, then go for |

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword |

People don't know how much the OP knows. Maybe they're happy to have Univers Zero and Shub-Niggurath recommended despite them not being anywhere near to what they had listed or even what they had known already. They're dark for sure, so why not? It's good to broaden horizons, isn't it? By the way: Edited by Lewian - April 21 2022 at 14:11 |

This is the first thing that occurred to me upon seeing the songs mentioned in the OP: |

Hey guys! Long post incoming.
Firstly, apologies for not replying sooner. I've been at work all day and have had minimal access to the internet, plus when I got home I gave all of the suggestions a listen. Secondly, I really did word my initial post and the thread title badly! It's always tricky when you can't quite put your finger on what it is you're looking for but what I think I'm trying to say is music that does a really good job of sucking you in and you can picture the setting vividly. With the Bitter Suite I can really imagine myself at some seedy pub/club and One Slip definitely takes me to a dingy hotel room full of guilt. Some other examples that come to mind are Jethro Tull's "Pilbroch (Cup In Hand)" (Can really picture looking through that window) and Steeleye Span's "King Henry" (Ghost House!). I hope that helps make things clearer. Lastly, "Atmospheric symphonic prog with an edge" DOES sound like something I'd like and probably describes "Through My Fingers" pretty well. So by all means suggest more stuff like that. At the same time though I LOVE everything that's been suggested! I'm already familiar with some bands like VdGG and Univers Zero but it's been great discovering new stuff. Discipline in particular have really resonated with me. By all means have fun and keep suggesting! Big smile |

^ I love "Helpless Child" and resisted mentioning Swans since I have talked about it too much of late (one of my fave songs there and that is the one that got me into Swans).
And since BlackenedGlass brings up atmospheric music with an edge again, and has mentioned a Pink Floyd track in the original post (that takes you on a journey), I will mention another track from that album which is Floydish, "The Sound". Edited by Logan - April 21 2022 at 17:28 |

Great choice, Greg, but one can never talk too much about Swans

The title track, and the rest of the album is all wonderfully dark symphonic prog with lots of moogs and mellotrons (don't let the black metal-like title scare you, it's inspired by those italian horror movies/video nasties such as Cannibal Holocaust)

Try some of King Crimson music. Red and Starless have some pretty dark stuff. Ceremony by Spooky Tooth is also a great option.
