I've been interested lately in listening to really dark and gritty progressive rock music, songs that really take you somewhere. I've no idea the best way to describe it so help there would be appreciated too, but here's a couple of songs that are along the lines I was thinking of:
Marillion: The Bitter Suite Pink Floyd: One Slip IQ: Through My Fingers Thanks in advance!

I'd say this one qualifies and is guaranteed to take you somewhere I could think of hundreds more but as your examples are 2/3rds Neo Prog, I'll wait with Univers Zero and Igor Wakhévitch

Echolyn - "All This Time We're Given". The entire album this song comes from, "I Heard You Listening", is dark.

Since Saperlipopette! has already mentioned "A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers", I'll mention a dark symphonic album that I've been playing quite a lot lately: Arachnoid - Arachnoid. Toutes Ces Images / Segamisec Setout |

That's exactly what I was thinking, how dark do you want to go? Because this is dark. Edited by Nogbad_The_Bad - April 21 2022 at 06:51 |

I would be interested if the OP would respond and let us know if any of these suggestions are what they had in mind. Most of these responses are far from the example songs given in the OP.

Based on his original choices. atmospheric symph prog, I would recommend the recent IQ albums.....Road Of Bones and Resistance. (I personally prefer Dark Matter and Frequency regarding IQ ) but Road of Bones sounds perfect for his needs.
I do think Discipline with Parmenter falls into that area as does some VDGG. Edited by dr wu23 - April 21 2022 at 09:59 |

I agree.....sounds like he's looking for more atmospheric symphonic prog with an edge but not as dark as some of the things posted. ![]() |

When I think of dark prog, I immediately do think of many things that have been listed that I love, the Igor Wakhevitch, Current-93, Univers Zero, Shun-Niggurath, Arachnoid (and for those that like that, try Shylock and the lighter Carpe Diem), as well as music by Comus and others.
I didn't remember the songs in the OP, but checked them out. They seem quite jaunty to my dark disposition -- can be rather sad. One I thought of, but it is mabe a little more sad than dark and yet also not as jaunty as music in the OP, but I think could appeal to those tastes is Porcupine Tree's "Heartattack in a Lay By" (but not right...). Maybe as grumpy progfan put it, symphonic prog (or I think melodic prog) with an edge (and maybe some angst) would be a good description. I would think various Steven Wilson could kind of fit the bill.... Discipline was mentioned, and that seems a good one fro your goals. Maybe music from Galahad's Empires Never Last: Edited by Logan - April 21 2022 at 11:08 |

I did, I saw people had made loads of great suggestions so decided to have a little fun with it, I'm sure Trane was the same.
