The point I was making (supposedly at the expense of 3F8Ts) was that we are naturally going to say that our favourite band/musicians are the best.

As for which are the most technically gifted, that is difficult to quantify. Some bands:Rush, Yes, KC and ELP for starters, lend themselves toward more virtuosic playing because of their style.Bands like Genesis and Gentle Giant are more understated in their instrumentation. Quite often it is like comparing a Quarterback to a Running Back in NFL or Central Defender to a Striker in Football. And as ultimately fruitless.

So anyway, which pillock thinks their favourite drummer is better than Neil Peart?Angry

Not my favourite guitarist but probably the best in the world at what he does. To coin a phrase from another great band 'Very heavy, very humble'.

Just my opinion mind you.

Reed Lover:

You are right on the money when you state that most people will post their fav musicians and not, from an objective point of view, the most gifted technically. Just dropping my two cents, I'd have to disagree about Neil Peart. The best prog drummer on the list is IMHO William Bruford. Not because he played in two of the greatest prog bands ever in the height of their days but because technically, really no one compares. Peart has some real nice chops and a great feel, but Bruford is a time-god. He can play in all signatures, when the rest of the band is playing in whatever other signature with such subtleness it's just unbelievable. Best guitarist on the list is Fripp or Gilmour IMHO. But there are far superiour players, such as Holdsworth or Steve Morse. Best Bass player would be Levin or Squire. But here also, can greater Gods be named. Thinking about Dave Larue, or even a Billy Sheehan.

Looking like the Yes boys have taken the title, Rush could not be considered..

A) Because although lifeson/Lee are in the top bracket you would have to place Howe/Squire above them !!!

B) From what I've heard Dream Theatre could well be better musicians also !!!

IMHO, Carl is so much better technically than either Peart or Bruford... and see, favorite band and all aside, this is one area I know.  I took percussion from 6th grade thru college.. I have a minor in college in music as a percussionist.  And I love Bill Bruford... and even Peart.... but nothing any of them has ever done has made me go "How the hell did he do that???".... Carl made me do that all the time.  Thats why I think he's a alien.... He's also the most hyperactive person I've ever known....

Well. Looking at the results of poll, and reading all the comments, it is obvious that the list must be redone. I suggest that other person do the job, and start again. Please include Rush and Gentle Giant, and some other bands outside the british island...

I was very impressed by the musicianship on Dream Theaters last album (Train of thought) Quite blown away, in fact.

Their music is a little too heavy for my tastes these days, though. If they had been around when I was 14 I would not doubt have thought they were the best thing ever.

At the end of the day it is all about opinion Three Fates, but I still think you allow your involvement with Greg to blind you.Yes he was a terrific vocalist a very good bassist and guitarist but being multi talented doesn't mean your great at all you do.If so we must throw in Mike Oldfield, who is superb at all the instruments he masters. As for choosing betwen the keyboardists that's possibly the most difficult. I think you'll find ample evidence of  Rick's piano skills on his various solo works but to split him or Keith would be the hardest.Squire is a remarkable bassist as is Bruford on drums. There will be many others we all favour, these are mine.Oh and lest I forget the greatest voice of them all Mr.Jon Anderson still touring and still as good as he ever was and that's simply viewing this from a singing point of a view.I really will have to listen to Gentle Giant, somehow I have missed them. Can anyone recommend what to listen to first.

He looks great for his age too. Didn't CP have some serious invasive surgery on his arms at one point. I think he was told that we never play again - certainly not to his old standard. What a brilliant turn around!

Nah, Sigod.  I would of lined that piccy up better if it was mine...  Its from Carl's site.

And to Fragile.. I felt that way about ELP long before I allowed Greg to blind me among other things..  And your wrong, being multi-talented is a great thing.. and yes Greg was great at all that he did (I can attest to that wholeheartedly)

And as much as I like Yes... Jon Anderson's voice???  Altho I'll give you that he's as good as he ever was... of course what that was is another question...

Having been intimate with a member of a prog rock band does put TF in a unique position, however such attachment possibly invalidates her opinions, Every man on here will swear that his wife is the comliest in the whole of christendom, but it's very possible that one mans sweetie-pie is another man's "Dragon in the Kitchen"....

Swinton, Opinions come from ones experience in life yours mine everyone.  Why would 3 fates be invalidated by getting to know the musicians no matter how intimately?  That statement is ludicrous.   Actually I think that makes her more of an expert of at least the bands she has traveled with.  She she's things the public never sees the way they practice both individually and as a band. She sees how things affect their music.

Acknowledging ELP is one of the most talented bands in Rock history I don't think individually they are the best players I have ever heard.  They had people they listened too and learned from also Carl learned from Louie Belson and Buddy Rich among others who I bet if you asked ELP they still would think some of these guys were better than themselves. So to say they are the best ever is still your own opinion only, 3 Fates.
