Oh come on - stop your sobbing! What's wrong with you? Just look at the list so far. It's wonderful. Made up of members here sharing some of their favorites with each other. If someone quite new to this progressive folk were to stumble over these seven pages - and decides to check out the 34 albums (soon to be 40)... that would be a potential gift for life. I think its a beautiful thing.

It does contain real folk, but not much real prog, so it's hardly surprising. I'm sure the list would look quite different on a folkarchives-site.

It was 1969 FFS!  Plus, Fairport had already pioneered prog-folk on their previous album (Unhalfbricking) with 'A Sailor's Life' - their whole approach to electric folk was progressive but if you want the evolved prog you seem to ascribe to Tull then look no further than 'Sloth' which came out a year later.

This was not about my personal preferences or tastes. Just how little surprised I was at the results. I don't care if music is "prog or not", but just happen to like a lot of music labeled as such. Personally I prefer Jethro Tull a little unproggier than on Thick as a Brick - and also I mainly like "my kind of folk" to have a more of a traditional oriented approach and less "rocking" than Fairport Convention.

Of that complete list of Paul's (the latest), I can say that I have not heard only 3 of those and that more than half of those albums are in my collection and then some.

My big point is similar to yours ... how many well meant and complete listens have more of the voters in this poll considered before choosing their best or favorites. I's even difficult for me to think that one ISB album is better than the other, but EARTHSPAN is so far and away one of the most inventive and emotionally charged album, with some incredible vocals, and it happens to be the one album by the ISB that most folks have not heard or enjoyed, like they might have the earlier stuff, which is still fun for sure, but not as alive and strong (and well recorded) like EARTHSPAN was. 

It's a difficult poll for me, and while I will never discredit JT, his presence for me is not really what a lot of this music is really all about. However, Ian's ability to mix and match and take things to another area/level, is INDEED, special. AND, some of it is lyric driven, which is often one of the big points in a lot of folk music. At least in its history ... so to see it not continued as "prog-folk", takes the group away from the listing completely! 

How we need more Pentangle's these days ... instead of more loud bands professing to be "progressive". And the Brittish/Irish/Celtic (both French and Irish) folk music is an area that is so far and away an enjoyable listen that when you get started, you are likely not to finish it! Even the American scene going back to the 30's and 40's is very good ... and sadly will never get a listen ... Woodie Guthrie did all he could for ... who knows?
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
