BaldFriede put up Rolling Stones' Satisfaction and Barbara Dennerlein's cover of it. Today, while doing some sidestepping in Cyberspace I stumbled upon this other cover by Björk and PJ Harvey, quite phenomenal, I think... So, for your pleasure:

My first two votes go to:

1: Rythme futur (Django Reinhardt + Atomic Ape)

2: Into the Night (Julee Cruise + Xiu Xiu)

I still haven't decided where my third vote will go.

I'd like to thank those who voted for "The Garden of Earthly Delights". It's good to see Snakefinger doing well in these polls again. The first time was "Magic and Ecstasy", also a cover but of an Ennio Morricone number from "Exorcist II: The Heretic".

I've known Snakefinger's version of "The Garden of Earthly Delights" from shortly after the time of its release, but only discovered The United States of America's version within the past few years. I find it interesting that The United States of America's approach is very psychedelic, whereas Snakefinger's approach is far more sinister. I do prefer Snakefinger's version, regarding it as one of my favourite Snakefinger tracks.

Made my votes with some comments:

1. The In Crowd (Dobie Gray + Bryan Ferry): I remember the original and have liked it. I am not sure if i had heard the Bryan Ferry version before, but it is just darn cool.

2. Rythme futur (Django Reinhardt + Atomic Ape): I've head of Django Reinhadt but had never taken the time to listen to his music. Definitely something I like and the Atomic Ape version is wild in a good way. Enjoyed listening to both.

3. Tomorrow Never Knows (The Beatles + Daniela Andrade): Of course, know the original and is one of my all-time favorites by the Beatles. I think the first cover of it I had heard was the 801 Live version, followed by the Phil Collins version. Really liked DAniela Andrade version and how she captured the song with her voice and guitar. A different take on the original.

Honorable mentions:

There were a number of songs + covers that came close.

4. Fairies Wear Boots (Black Sabbath + miRthkon): I am a Sabbath fan and definitely like this different take on the song. I had gone through it a few times and it was a winner at first listen but the vocals didn't sit as well with me subsequently. Also, a mention on Type O Negative's cover of the other Black Sabbath (other than my suggestion). I like Type O Negative, but one of their strength's is their sense of humor and for me, their best cover is that of Seals and Croft's Summer Breeze.

5. Satisfaction (The Rolling Stones + Barbara Dennerlein): Thoroughly enjoyed the playing and performance by Barbara Dennerlein, but I didn't feel so connected to it as a cover of the original.

6. Into the Night (Julee Cruise + Xiu Xiu): I think I preferred the cover over the original of this one. Nice cinematic feel in my opinion. It kept my attention.

7. No Way Out of Here (Unicorn + Iron & Wine): Did not know before that David Gilmour's version is a cover. That is one of my favorite's from that album.

8. Dönence (Baris Manco + Deli Vahit): Absolutely enjoyed the original. First time hearing that. The cover didn't do it for me. If we were voting just on one song, the original would have been on my podium.

Very glad to see that Mike. I have really enjoyed your contributions, and while reading your and other people's comments may even be my favourite part of this (not just when it comes to my choices but generally), it can be very time consuming even when doing short comments.

On another note, this is based on a comment in another poll, that I felt like sharing here.

I did a poll which included Cardiacs' Stoneage Dinosaurs, and Shannon wrote this in response:

Well I checked out the cover on youtube and was moved by it. I was especially moved by Steven Wilson's heartfelt and warm message about Tim Smith to go with the video (brought a tear to my eye so I wont repeat it, one can follow the link from the embed to read that if one wants).

So here is the original and the cover:

Very happy to read this. I know how you're feeling, I also sometimes put pressure on myself to write comments just to give something to the people who point me to all this great music, but I'm much more of a listener than a writer really, so at times I also can't do much more than just vote.

I'm already a World Party fan and love that track, but honestly I thought Eliza's cover wasn't that captivating.  When I'm already a big fan of a track, then the cover has to be stellar or I'm even more judgmental over it, so that's my fault.
No apologies necessary, it just didn't hit the nerve for you. There were many other wonderful covers in here, as well.  One thing that is obvious is that the participants here really listen closely and weigh their choices.  And that is all one can ask, for a fair listen.

PS Very glad you're going to continue....Not everyone can comment at length, esp all the time, it's not a requirement, whatsoever!

Today I finally got to listen to the playlist (thanks George!). This time no elaborate comments from me (next time better?), just on my final choices... Quite a good listen overall, with some very well known songs (and unknown covers) and some unknown treasures. My choices are based, of course, on my own musical preferences, but also on what I like in a cover: for me it has to be some kind of homage to the original and at the same time presenting the signature of the band/artist that covers it, appropriating the song without denaturing the original (i.e. turning it into something that is only showcasing the covering artist/band but gone too astray from the original...). Based on this, my votes go to (in order of preference):
- Into the Night (Julee Cruise + Xiu Xiu)
- Is It Like Today? (World Party + Eliza Gilkyson)
- No Way Out of Here (Unicorn + Iron & Wine

I also very much liked Snakefinger's cover of The Garden of Eartly Delights, Daniela Andrade's take on Tomorrow Never Knows (quite interesting how she conveys that psychedelic stance mainly with her voice...), the Atomic Ape jam-like take on Reinhardt and the humour in Haydn's Surprise Symphony (but I guess this really works out better when being present in the concert room...)... And how the Dönence's typical 80s synth pop/rock changes into a typical 90s/2000s (?) dance track is quite fascinating...

It could be Is It Like Today, very catchy and two nicely different versions, Via Con Me, very fresh and uplifting, or Into The Night - here I probably like the original most but it's a bit harder to get into Xiu Xiu's version.

I also like the miRthkon Black Sabbath cover, but the original not that much, and the United States of America song is just gorgeous, but I knew that one before and the cover doesn't quite meet my taste.

Anyway, I have to make a decision, and I say just about: Into the Night, on the strength of the original, and Xiu Xiu at least has some potential.

The two I love most here are No Way Out Of Here (I love David Gilmour's one and wasn't aware that that's not the original, very nice having two other good versions of this), and Rhythm Future (such a joy of playing). There are a few candidates for no. 3 - next posting...
