Subject: Interactive Poll X: Cover Your Ears!
Date Posted: January 31 2021 at 05:14
Welcome to my first Interactive Poll creatorship event! (Anyone can participate BTW...)
I'll keep it short. Nominate a song and a cover version of it (2 songs in total), and then when the voting process is commenced, vote for your 3 favourite options. You can also share other songs, but please put your 2 nominations in your original post.
Note: Please don't vote for your own nominations.
I think a cover is accomplished on condition that your version both reminds one of and alienates one from the original song, yet it is merely my viewpoint and has nothing to do with the rules here. You can come up with anything you like as long as you nominate a song and a cover version of it.
The cover you nominate shouldn't necessarily be a studio recording. It can be a live version too.
This time I'll nominate a Turkish song and a live cover version of it.
Barış Manço - Dönence: Barış Manço (R.I.P.) was one of the most prominent musicians of my country. His earlier works had even ventured forth into the prog domains, but he became popular (as is easy to guess) with his pop songs. Yet, even his pop style has an edge over the typical pop outputs. I guess he is not that much known globally, but he had many Japanese fans; he gave concerts in their country.
Here is a part of its lyrics' English translation:
I'm in the arms of the pitch-black night, all alone Somewhere far away, the suns are rising I know... Dönence (Tropic)
And here is a "crazy" cover of it. The guy here is called "Deli Vahit", which means Crazy Vahit (his name), or Vahit the Mad.

Nice theme. Looking forward to hearing what people come up with.
I actually knew "Dönence". A Turkish person I know once introduced me to it. Great song!

If the music is totally different, I don't think your first suggestion is counted as a cover. As for the translated cover versions, I think if it gives a "cover feeling", that would be OK.

The song "No Way Out of Here" was made famous when David Gilmour covered it for his solo album. Most of us here have probably heard that version of it, so I'm not going to post that one even if it is a great version. Instead, I'm going to post the original version of this song (yes, that's correct, Gilmour didn't write that song contrary to popular opinion).
The song was actually done by a band called "Unicorn" which was kind of a Buffalo Springfield-type band, and it unfortunately gets overlooked. So I'm going to use the original version first....
Unicorn - "No Way Out of Here"
Now, here is a really great cover of it done by Iron & Wine with Ben Bridwell (from "Band of Horses" who I have posted in the past) singing the lead. It's also quite an excellent version of the song.

EDIT: This is my selection. The other videos were deleted by request.

There's not a strong tradition for cover versions in Denmark, which makes my selection somewhat difficult. Many of those I do know about sound very commercial. Also, I want to select a cover that is considerably different from the original.
One option I was playing with is an album by Steffen Brandt on which he performs his own translations of Dylan songs, but I generally prefer the original versions. Brandt's versions aren't actually that different in terms of mood. Also the Swedish singer Mikael Wiehe has recorded many Dylan songs in his own translations, but I normally like him best when he sings his own songs.
Then there is music from other countries, but I know too few cover versions there.
Also, I want to like both the original and the cover...

My nomination is the second movement of Haydn's symphony No. 94 (known as the "Surprise Symphony"). First, the original version:
And here is the Hoffnung Music Festival take on the same movement.
And here as bonus material: "Carlotta's Galop" is composed by Nino Rota and is used in Fellini's 8 1/2. Here is the orginal version:
And here is a version by Petra Haden:

Went round with a couple of ideas, but came back to this in the end. I have always loved this song, I first heard the original version by World Party and later, was surprised to see it covered, as below, by Eliza Gilkyson. These are not so different as say, Dylan's and Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower," but I feel that they are complementary pieces, as the original is sort of an alt/rock treatment and Gilkyson gives it a more Americana feel. There were some others, like I said, but I don't think I've brought World Party to this party before.

Coincidentally, I had been listening for the past month or so to this music collective that does rock & metal covers with a brass band, so I will go with a cover by them. The hard part was deciding on what. A lot of the originals they cover are by Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Tool, and other bands that fall in that genre. Feeling some leftover protest from Lorenzo's poll, I went with a cover of this classic, which everyone knows.
Black Sabbath "War Pigs"
Though I could have chosen a lesser known song, this cover just rocks in my opinion. The horns absolutely get it down and the singer sings the sh*t out of the song.
Brass Against ft. Maya Azucena "War Pigs"
A bit more about Brass Against. Quoting their description from their website.
In this politically challenging era, it’s time to stand up against the machine. Brass Against is a collective of artists, led and curated by Brad Hammonds, who share in the goal of creating brass protest music that calls fans to action. We want the music we perform to sound inspiring and resonate with people’s emotions, encouraging them to act. We combine rock and edgy hip-hop to play music that's powerful and empowering. Brass Against is exceptional music with a political edge.
Also, I can't resist posting this bonus. Not just a war pig, but a pig.
MetalTrump "War Pigs"
Edit to add. Ah, didn't notice the other Sabbath cover in this poll. I am still sticking with this. Can never have too much Sabbath.

Apparently I should put my nomination in my first post, which is this.
Tomorrow Never Knows, The Beatles & Daniela Andrade

Steve Hackett's Spectral Mornings and its cover version with lyrics would probably be too prog, wouldn't it? ... and too well known, I guess you all know the original at least.

It crossed my mind, and I'm very well aware about (non)including prog stuff especially if they have received 50 or more ratings. I'm not sure, but I think we can make an exception on this particular round. If it is up to me, I can allow one of the ProgArchived songs here. What do you and others think?

A couple of Twin Peaks tracks were covered already in the TV show soundtracks topic and recently I did a poll which mentions the album Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks, and I don't want to cover the examples I used there. Instead of going for instrumentals, I will go for two proper songs (have vocals) -- one used in Twin Peaks, and the 2016 "tribute".
Julee Cruise - "Into the Night" (1989)
Xiu Xiu - "Into the Night" (2016)
In the poll I did mentioning this Xiu Xiu album someone mentioned that they aren't interested in covers (I am), and in this case I think that Xiu Xiu have re-interpreted music and given it very much their own spin, so while based on other music and certainly directly inspired by it, it also has uniqueness.
* edited to change my "Into the Night" embed to a video that seems to work more globally (thanks Anders).
By the way, love the topic and title for it.

The rules given in the OP didn't exclude PA tracks for either the original or the cover, and because of this, both of my tracks are in PA. I think it's too late to change the rules now.

It is never too late. If necessary, I can edit my original post and rule the inclusion of prog stuff out, and so you can edit your original post and nominate some other songs.
I'm okay with prog songs, but we normally exclude them. Lorenzo? I'll do whatever you say, as you're the originator of the Interactive Poll format.

I really think it's up to the threadmaster. I'm fine with prog and I'm fine with excluding prog. We have done both, there is no general rule. Given that people have already included tracks on PA I think we should stick to that. However, everybody knows that a number of people don't vote for stuff they already know, so everyone can make their own attempt to avoid this if they want.

OK, as prog is allowed and my collection is somehow scarce of covers (and I posted quite a few of those I like most already in the earlier poll) I take a different approach here... namely I went through my favourite tracks of all times, of course all so good that one might think they're uncoverable, and looked for covers on youtube that are really great. And the winner is...
The problem of course is that everybody knows the original and this will cost me votes, but whatever... I can listen to the TNK original night and day, it is always fresh, and what Daniela makes of it is just incredible.
Doing this I also found great female covers of Can's Vitamin C and Radiohead's There There. Maybe I play them later.

So I listened to various ones and some of my thoughts -- I just want to focus on the first duo mentioned (since some listed more than one duo and I have some time constraints) and will work on the assumption that those are the nominated duos. This will be short:
Shadowyzard: "Dönence". I really like the original. The cover is kind of Dönuts (with an emphasis on nuts) and I appreciated it more musically when I just listened rather than watched. It's fun. I was thinking that I'd like to hear Crazy Vahit perform Tubular Bells, although then he might call it Tubular Balls cause its rather nuts.
Cristi: "Seawinds". I'd heard that Accept version and like it. On first listen I wasn't that keen on Therion's version, but the next day I played it properly without looking at the thread, hurrying through or being distracted, and I think that it's a great cover. The seawinds will change direction under the right circumstances.
I prophesy disaster: "The Garden of Earthly Delights". "USA, USA!" shouts the angry mob (MAGA crowd etc.) at the doors to the Capitol building. I knew the United States of America song, and love it. I might have heard the cover before, but I really loved it. I could well understand any reluctance or refusal to change your selection, because it's a great one. I was all for keeping America great with those selections. ;)
Hiram: "Type O Negative". That doomy BS, and I don't mean BS in a bad way, just Black Sabbath. A song I know quite well. I hadn't heard the cover before. The vocals take some getting used to for me (cookie monster stuff as it is sometimes called) but it works.
BaldFriede: "Satisfaction". I'd say I cant get no, but I really like the Dennerlein one. It's so very different that it took paying attention to and looking up to know that it is a kind of cover (more based on or inspired by than a cover I'd say, but then maybe my ears were too covered too easily notice). I'd actually heard both, the Rolling Stones one of course is famous, and the other I had heard because you often mention Dennerlein. I'm not sure if that is intended to be your nomination since you have mentioned four duos. Looks like you might have been thinking about changing it to Thoth (I already knew Nick Turner's Thoth and love it).
TCat: "No Way Out of Here". Cool, the Unicorn has transformed into a duocorn. I enjoyed those, and that is a very good cover (think I prefer it to the original).
The Anders: "Carlotta's Galop". I'm a fan of Nino Rota and 8 1/2 and enjoyed the cover version. I've definitely heard of Petra Goes to the Movies before.
Snicolette: "Is It Like Today?" . Definitely a country thing going on. Think I've heard the original before. I enjoyed both despite not totally being in my wheelhouse (getting outside of that wheelhouse is one of the joys of and interesting things about this series). I guess we all like being exposed to different types of music here
mathman0806: "War Pigs." More BS, my BS-o-meter is pinging hard and heavy. What a heavy and great song that BS one is. Definitely one of my favourite BS tracks and heavy tracks. That's kind of exemplary of how I like it hard and heavy. And that is a very cool cover.
Logan: "Into the Night". Twin songs for Twin Peaks. No need to comment more on my own selection (Just adding this in case it helps keep track of the order, although I might have made mistakes).
Ronstein: "For Absent Friends". Of course Genesis and the album it's off is very popular at PA, and I like the song. I think Sinclair did a terrific version.
jamesbaldwin: "Via con me". Looking at the original album cover, this is something of which I should be abreast. I like it, and the song cover.
Lewian: "Tomorrow Never Knows". of course I know the Beatles one very well, and it's a great one, and I really like the cover version. By the way, I would not discount voting for a duo when I don't know both versions well (or in this case, had never heard that cover).
Tancos: "Rythme Futur": This is one where I think I'd only heard the cover and not the original. Great stuff. I know of Django Reinhardt better than I know his music.
Tapfret: "Fairies Wear Boots". While I know Mirthkon quite well, I hadn't heard this. As expected, Mirthkon put its own very enjoyable spin on the music.
Hope I caught everyone.
{Just a note, when I tried to add quotes for songs to my last poll I was getting errors and so edited them out -- just a potential head's up}

Fine if I know the cover, but choosing the best cover is still going to
be really hard, as I don’t know any of the cover versions (so far). Here we go, with first impressions of Page
One.
Shadowyzard:Barış Manço
“Dönence” Begins with some
xylophone, then some synth hits and bass kicks in. There is a magnificence feel to this, also a
bit apprehensive feeling, especially when he begins to speak. Doubled guitar lead commences, and back to
the bass line. Very dramatic vocals and
stance from the singer when his part begins in earnest. Cinematic feel to this for me (not knowing
the words). Another guitar lead after a
repeating sort of bridge. The feeling
for me is of a history being told in song. Nice, never heard this before. Cover by Deli Vahit; This has much more of a
Disco-y/Middle Eastern treatment in the arrangement. This is actually a lot of fun, I enjoyed the
seriousness of the original and also how it fits so handily into a much lighter
frame. The dancers are so fun, too, I
spent some time in the Middle Eastern dance community, always enjoy seeing good
dancers in pretty costumes.
Cristi: Accept “Seawinds” A song of someone leaving home behind,
perhaps looking nostalgically at both times past from home and also of those
times before the life of the singer, to return.
Hard rock here, in a classic format for the genre. Cover by Therion: This has more symphonic
grounding, and with female vocals. It
has a richer tone to it, to my ear, the majesty of the piece feels more
properly decorated to match the heroic, yet wistful tone of the song.
I prophesy disaster: The United States of America
“The Garden of Earthly Delights” I heard
this a million years ago, it seems and I know I saw a copy or two cross my path
as a psych record buyer at a used record stoere in the early 80’s.Psych space
music with a female lead, who kind of reminds me of Jacqui McShee in a way, for
some reason, although she is not quite so clear as Jacqui. Lots of electronic sounds and
whirly-swirlies. The psych folks really
got a kick out of Bosch. I’m surprised
this didn’t do better in it’s time.
Cover by Snakefinger: The sound
is a bit different, with the male vocals and guitars! It mostly follows quite closely, otherwise,
except with less whirly-swirlies. But
still a nice, complementary piece, to be played side by side with the original.
Well done!
BaldFriede: Welcome to these polls! The Rolling Stones
“(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” Of
course I do know this one, so I’m mostly interested in hearing the cover you
selected, as I’ve not heard that. This
particular version is the original mono.
Great classic rock tune, with tons of sass. Cover by Barbara Dennerlein: Starts off with quirky organ and horns,
funky/jazzy percussion. Slows down a bit for some bass and then a horn
solo. What a fun cover this is, turns it
completely around. The Beatles “Yesterday,” Again, I know this one, a
beautiful, wistful tune, way beyond the boys’ years. Now on to the cover by Barbara
Dennerlein: Now, I think I know a little
more of what to expect, but let’s see what she does. This one keeps the feel more of the original,
with the organ also reminiscent a bit of Procol’s “Whiter Shade of Pale,” due
to it’s tone. Very pretty ornamenting
with the electric jazz-style guitar.
Nice riffing on the organ about 1/3 in, which leads to a more pronounced
shot of electric guitar. Kay Ballard
“In Other Words) (Fly Me To The Moon)”
Romantic period piece, an evergreen love song with orchestration typical
for it’s time with a superb songstress wistfully confessing her love. Covered by Barbara Dennerlein: This version is much snazzier and jazzier in
feel. I like the slip-slidy strings that
come in, gives it more of a gypsy jazz as opposed to almost a polka feel. She
is a lot of fun! Nick Turner “Thoth” Ethereal
flute begins the composition, percussive sounds in the background and some
twangy string something. Intensifies in
feel, then robotic (?) voice tells the tale of himself, as it is revealed that
this is the god, Thoth. Fades out. Next up is another look and listen at the god
speaking of himself again, with some great, searing space-out lead guitar and
percussion. I prefer this take rather
than the more synthesized voice one.
Hiram: I think this is your first time in these
polls? Welcome! Black Sabbath “Black Sabbath” Very familiar with this iconic piece, pretty
much set the stage for metal ever since.
Very ponderous and atmospheric, slow build and solid performance that
gradually builds in speed and intensity by all these young kids. 😊 Covered by Type O Negative A
lot in the same vein (lol), but even more slow and ominous than the original (although
the original was considered shocking by some in it’s day, by these guys’ time,
not so much). This one adds some whu whu
whu noises and spooky keyboards to the even-more-spoken (and growly) than
Ozzy’s vocals. They follow much of the
trajectory of the original, with the pace picking up towards the end, as things
just get steadily worse for the narrator.
Mike: Unicorn “No Way Out of Here” Americana/Alt Rock-ish band here. I like the rustic sound of them, you have a
great ear for this kind of thing, always interested to hear what you bring that
is out of my more normal-for-me sphere.
Some twangy guitars, nice harmonies, maybe a banjo in there? A bit of
piano underpinning, makes me think the place they’re talking about is some
haunted honky-tonk somewhere down a back road.
Careful if you go inside! Covered
by Iron & Wine and Ben Bridwell. You may remember I love Iron & Wine,
but I’ve not heard this, so looking forward to it and here we go. Here it is presented in a more Americana than
Alt Rock sound, although at times the harmonies are reminiscent of
CSN&Y. Same almost haunted place
feeling, but with some steel guitar and crisper vocals and harmonies. This one gives me chills. Excellent choice and an excellent cover of
the original. 2nd selection
of Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” Raggedy electric guitar opens and jumps right
into their particular blend of heavy/grungy/alt/rock. The guitar continues relentlessly driving
this song of rebelling against an abuser.
About 2/3rds in, the pace slows to the end. Cover by the great Johnny Cash. This one has the classic Cash sound, with
relentless acoustic guitar this time, Johnny’s evocative voice and piano
underpinning. I find him more
convincing, truly, in his portrayal of quiet, rather than loud, anger. Covered again by Sara DeBell. This one starts off with clop-clop percussion
and xylophone, some slidy, slithery strings and bouncy keys. Joined in 2/3rds through with a bit of
orchestra and organ. Definitely a truly
different version! Quite a lot of fun
The Anders: Nina Rota:
“Carlotta’s Galop” Loved the
film! And a galop it is, indeed! Maybe with a few fences taken, too. Definitely has the feel of cinema, there is a
comedic edge to it (fittingly), I could see a vaudeville orchestra take it
on. Cover by Petra Haden. This one is even more comedic, with it being
done (all?) with voices. Really fun,
warped Warner Brothers cartoons feeling to it.
These were both inspired!
Intrigued to hear more of this.
George: Black Sabbath “War Pigs” Another Sabs classic piece, crunchy and heavy,
Ozzy’s almost-monotone giving the song a feeling of numbness. Bill’s powerful drumming keeps driving it
forward. Covered by Brass Against ft
Maya Azucena. Very heavy, this time with
so much brass! Great idea to cover this,
in this way. Oh yeah, great pipes on
Maya! Absolutely just as powerful, with the
band as killer as the singer. And a
bonus, MetalTrump’s “cover. “ So funny!
And I so agree with you.
Lewian: This one I do know and I just love this
version. I think it’s just
spectacular. I hope some others here
haven’t heard it with the vocals and lyrics put to the piece, so they can have
the joy of hearing it for the first time.
I know you said it’s out of competition, but I do love seeing it here,
anyway.

Normally I prefer to vote for songs I didn't already know, but this time around there are quite a few familiar songs. So I am not sure if I can keep it this time.

Here are my comments on the first songs.
Shadowyzard
Barış Manço - "Dönence". Again, I already knew this song, but since there are so many familiar songs in this poll anyway, it might actually be a contender in the end. I love the xylophone intro and its interplay with the trademark "keyboard wizard" stuff. Quite proggy, and I also like that there is a clear oriental flavour to it. Later it turns into some funk/disco with a really great guitar solo. Unfortunately the cover version is absolutely not for me. It does have some entertainment value, and it is quite fun to watch, but I clearly prefer the original version.
Cristi
Accept - "Seawinds". I knew about this band, but not really their music, and the song is new to me. A sort of hard rock ballad, and quite an interesting one. The composition isn't that straight forward, and I like the tone of the lead guitars. The cover version by Therion sounds like it's from sometime in the 90's (the other says early 80's to me). The two versions aren't exactly worlds apart, and I wouldn't try to pick one of them.
I prophesy disaster
I think I had heard of the United States of America, but I haven't heard any of their music - at least not to my knowledge. Typical late 60's psychedelic sound. Not what I listen to the most, but I like it. Reminds me a bit of Jefferson Airplane. I like the soundscape with various sound effect. The Snakefinger version is very different. More avantgardistic, and much more up my alley. But I like both versions. Contender.
BaldFriede
I know both "Satisfaction" and "Yesterday" forwards and backwards and can sing them in my sleep (is "Satisfaction" your nomination by the way?), but the cover versions are new to me - all instrumental and in the jazzy area. Sadly that type of jazz does little for me. The original versions are sublime of course. "Fly Me To the Moon" I had heard of, but I hadn't actually heard the song before. I've never been a fan of Tin Pan Alley and things similar to it.

Thoughts from page one, more later.
Shadowyzard
Never heard of either of these artists before. I think the only Turkish musician I've known this far is Erkin Koray (who is amazing!). Original is cool pop disco rather typical of its time I think with nice funky basslines. Will have to check out more Barış Manço later. Modernized cover is good fun for a while but not my kind of stuff really. If the guy actually does everything he seems to do simultaneously, you must really admire his skill.
Cristi
Aside from "Metal Heart" and "Balls to the Wall" I'm not at all familiar with Accept and I guess this is not them at their most typical? Cover is a nice surprise as I expected something heavier from Therion (as I did from Accept).
I prophesy disaster
Lovely offbeat oddball pop, both the original and the cover. It's a pity the USA had such a short career. Snakefinger is a big favourite of mine and he really makes this song his own.
BaldFriede
Original is of course one of the most famous rock songs and deservedly so. Barbara Dennerlein turns it into something stylistically quite different with success. I can see what's the fascination here, but not my kind of stuff.
Then it's my own choices. A spontaneous decision as I was listening to Type O Negative at the time.
TCat
Not familiar with the song before. Original is great, I love how it grows towards the end and there's some excellent bass playing there. Cover is in more modern americana style. Not bad but I prefer the original.
The Anders
It's been ages since I saw 8 1/2 (or any Fellini film for that matter). Very fun and very soundtrackish song. The cover is even more fun!
Snicolette
Nice pop/rock song. I think I prefer the cover just slightly over the original.
mathman0806
War Pigs is my favourite Black Sabbath song. I knew the cover version already as well and I think they do an excellent job. It might've been even better if they had left the guitar out and gone with just the horns.

To continue on with the BS, there is the story of Jazz Sabbath. About 16 minutes long.
This clip gives the "original" version of Iron Man (Derek the Ironing Man).
This was released last year and done by Adam Wakeman (son of Rick). Also a touring keyboardist/guitarist for Sabbath and Ozzy.

First impressions of Page Two Entries: Wow. This is gonna be another terribly difficult one.
George:Out of Competition, mashup Beyonce ft
Kendrick Lamar “Freedom”Begins with
some Farfisa sounding organ then Beyonce sings with her diva-style vocals, a
song of rebellion and a call for freedom.Spoken part in the final third part.Kinda liked it until then, not fond of speaking in music much, but could
hear how this speaks to many.Rage Against
the Machine “Freedom”Hard rock sound
mixing it up with hip-hop.Driving beat
and speaking-style vocals.I liked the
guitar solo in the middle, even though in general, this is not my style.Mashup:Brass Agains ft Sophia Urista “Freedom”Really have fun listening to these guys, they cover heavy music really
well, and I like this lady’s voice, it’s more “natural,” sounding to me than
Beyonce’s.I much prefer this to either
of the originals.Brass Against Bonus of
“Rusty Cage”, again with Sophia Urista.I really like her vocals! And
this ensemble.Creative way of switching
up heavy rock.
Logan: Julee Cruise “Into the Night” I actually remember this one from the show,
being a big fan, fittingly eerie.
Ghostly female vocals over soft percussion and keyboards. Deeper key sounds about halfway in. Orchestral surprise near the end. Cover by Xiu Xiu: Sharper percussion opens and strong
orchestral hits, with electric guitar lead and high bell sounds. Much more forceful than the original in
feel. Makes me think of if Clannad were
to do a tortured sort of song, with the layers and the slightly obscured vocals. Deep “Twin Peaks,” underwater type guitar
lead about halfway in. I like this one a
lot.
Ronstein: Genesis “For Absent Friends” Of course very familiar with this
classic. Wistful, sweet song, that feels
so very charmingly English to me.
Covered by Richard Sinclair This
one much more straight-forward, without the effects on the vocals. Lovely piano joined by guitar and flute-y
voices? Or keys? Not sure how they are doing the effect, but it’s
very fitting for the piece.
Cristi:Spandau
Ballet “Through the Barricades” Synth
and pretty plucked guitar begin the tune.
Wistful song, honouring sacrifices.
Soulful sax solo near the end of the tune. Cover by Dida Drăgan şi
Compact Născută sunt să cânt. This
time a woman takes the mic, to very good effect. They go for a more dramatic midsection here. Moving ballad, no matter which way it’s done.
Lorenzo: Paolo
Conte “Via Con Me” This one feels a bit
sarcastic, darkly bright, if that makes any sense. Love the break with the vibes and the flutes
(?). Seems as though it could be part of
a musical. Covered by Negri per
caso: This is even bouncier and jazzier than
the original, with a chorus of vocalists supporting the male lead
vocalist. It’s a fun piece. Either way, I can see choreography involved,
also. It’s very catchy.

^ Thanks, Snicolette. I'm very glad that you could appreciate the cover version. I've been somewhat nervously anticipating reaction.
By the way, I feel very unsure about how I will be voting based on the ones I covered (listened to all of those three times already, but I think it's going to need at least two more spins). All have merit in their own ways, and I will be judging how the cover compares and contrasts with the original more than how much I like the original, if that makes sense. Or just go with my gut at the time, which is how I usually do it no matter how many angles I think of to approach things. Think it through, then throw that away and just go with it is often my way. All of the music has opened up more and more the more I spun it.

A couple of quick comments before I'm off to work.
Logan
Twin Peaks, Lynch, Badalamenti, Julee Cruise - love all of them. The song is so connected to that whole "Lynchian" feel of being in a dream that is slightly disturbing and anything can happen, beautiful or ugly things. Excellent jump scare orchestra hit. I've been meaning to check out Xiu Xiu for a long time. Why I haven't done it yet, I really don't know, as this sounded pretty much as I expected them to sound like. Can't beat the original but that's not the point. Very good cover and another great new find for me from this poll.
Ronstein
Short pastoral ditty, classic of course. I think it works better in the album context than as an individual song. Cover version does a good job, nothing more, nothing less.

First listen through Page Three:
Lewian: Since first entry on other page was not In Competition:The Beatles “Tomorrow Never Knows”Of course, again, very familiar and also one of my fave Beatles tunes
and LPs.Very esoteric, experimental,
psychedelic piece.Cover by Daniela Andrade: Here
on solo electric guitar, she does have a little bit of a lisp, not sure if it’s
intentional or not. Still keeps the
dreamy feel of the piece, there is a nice chorus with herself a couple of times,
way back in the mix, with a tiny bit of some kind of keys underpinning that
part. Lovely and turns it into another
thing, entirely, in this singer/songwriter mode
Mike's Addition:Cover of “Crazy Train,” by the Louisville Leopard
Percussionists: Here a bunch of cool kids on vibes and drums, some keys and
bass for variety. What a lot of fun,
especially the soloists! It made me
happy, too. 😊
Tancos:Welcome to these polls, Tancos!Django Reinhardt “Rythym Future”Killer gypsy jazz guitarist (duh) just having a little bit of fun, here.Wonderful, comedic yet also virtuosic piece
of music, performed by a master and accompanied by a clarinet, I believe. Now on to the cover, by Atomic Ape:This one has more forward percussion and instead of clarinet,
saxophone.Guitars are electric here.
Definitely the same song, but dressed in different clothes.I especially enjoyed the final third, where
everyone cuts loose, even more than previously.Excellent!
Tapfret:Black Sabbath “Fairies Wear Boots”Also very familiar with this one (people love to cover Sabbath, don’t
they?).Fun to see those youngsters in
this live video.Covered by miRthkon: This cover is very different, starting with
horns, will be interested to see where they take it. The horns continue on, repeating, as the
guitars and drums kick in FULL force, then they drop out and resurface
sporadically as the song continues. The vocalist
takes the job on with a bit more melodic of a vocal than Ozzy, yet staying true
to the lead vocal melody. About 2/3rds
in they do a very creative vocal juxtaposed with the repeating horns once
again. Really an intriguing take. The Louisville Leopard Percussionists
take on YYZ by Rush:More of
these great kids on their vibes, what complicated stuff they have taken on,
they are just amazing. And not only
because they’re kids. This one made me
just as happy at Mike’s.😊

Thanks Hiram for the thoughtful commentary.
I particularly liked Twin Peaks for the Badalamenti music, but definitely appreciate the Cruise (and others) music too. I've come to appreciate it more. I was the same with Xiu Xiu as I'd read things about the music at this site years ago but only very recently started listening as I came across that Twin Peaks themed album by accident (when looking into 2016 albums at rateyourmusic) and am a big fan of Twin Peaks.
This is the first track on the album, in case anyone is interested (it could be more unique):
The original Badalementi version was my nomination for an earlier poll in this series about TV soundtracks.
And Lorenzo, thanks for the video (had seen the film before and interesting to hear it now in that context).

And to sum it up with extras on Page Four and dr wu23:
George:Thanks for the info re Jazz Sabbath, btw.I love what they do with the Sabs material.
BaldFriede:Cover of “Tomorrow Never Knows,” by 801:Begins with repeating guitar line and snapping
bass, adding in wavering synths, definitely bringing psych to a meeting with
electronics.Vocals are reminiscent of
the original, especially when they get to the second verse.Extra cool that this was done live, obviously
in the hands of pros.
Logan:Xiu Xiu, cover of “Laura Palmer’s Theme”I like this one, it’s just as somber as the original
but a bit more up-front, although it lacks some of the delicacy that I felt fit
the young girl’s untimely death.
dr wu23: Dobie Gray “The In Crowd” Great early sixties pop song with a stellar
vocalist. 😊 I remember
we all watched “Shindig,” so I might even have seen this. Classic.
Covered by Bryan Ferry: Another class act, Mr Ferry. Here, he gives it a much more late 70’s,
early 80’s rock feel, more driving guitars and quavering vocals. Super-cool fingersnaps and strong horn section. Made me smile. 😊

I'm afraid I'm a bit behind. Will try to catch up.

So this is from where I left.
Hiram
Black Sabbath - "Black Sabbath" is one of several songs I knew in advance. I still struggle to get Black Sabbath. I'm aware of the impact they have had, but the music does little for me; maybe you just have to be a heavy fan... The Type O Negative version begins with some very creepy sound effects. Also it contains spoken words rather than singing - until the tempo change. Again: not for me, but tastes differ.
BaldFriede pt. 2
"Thoth" (original) starts with some tick-tock sounds and a flute of sorts. Then enter a beat, and later an electronically manipulated speaking voice. I like it, but I think I would have to hear it some more times. The other version doesn't sound that different sonically (it appears to be the same artist), but it's a different composition of course. Once again there's spoken word. I liked the first version much better.
TCat
Unicorn - "No Way Out of Here". I didn't know this one. I'm undecided as what to think of it at this point. Maybe it requires a relisten. It sounds like it's from the 1970's. I like some of the guitar work, but I find the lead vocals a bit anonymous. Iron & Wine with Ben Bridwell: I think I like this version better, especially the transition to the chours. A more sparse use of the pedal steel would do good. Not that I don't like pedal steel, but it would be more effective if it just came in once in a while. Good song in any case.
Soundgarden - "Rusty Cage". I once had Superunknown copied to a cassette tape, but I only rarely listened to it. The Badmotorfinger album I haven't actually heard before, so this song is new to me. Apart from Nirvana who were usually very melodic, grunge is not so much my thing. Not that it's a bad song in any way, but were are in the area of heavy guitar riffs and hard rock screaming, and it is not exactly my home ground. But I acknowledge its qualities. Johnny Cash (the clip provided in the original post is blocked here, so I am listening to the music video instead) is more up my alley. More restrained. Sara DeBell: And now for something completely different. It starts with a metronome and several other pling plong sounds. Then there are som jazzy keyboard instruments. Clearly an original take on the song, and not without humour. I also like the strings, they make a nice contrast. An all instrumental version.

Better late than never... I was away for a film shoot this week in a zone without internet (which is quite good, actually), so I had no time whatsoever to listen to all the suggestions yet, but here are mine.
Sorry for giving you another very well known song, but it is the band that covers it that interests me more here: Shaka Ponk. They are a French electro-punk-hip hop-funk-rock-fusion band and their live performances are generally nothing less than tremendous! And they have done quite some interesting covers. My nomination is from the live music TV show Taratata, which often asks bands to team up with another artist and do a cover, so here Shaka Ponk plays with the Berhollet sisters (two young popular violonists...), but it is Shaka Ponk all over ! PLAY THEM LOUD!
The original: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit:
The Cover: Shaka Ponk - Smells Like Teen Spirit:
And for the pleasure of it, another very well known original and the cover by Shaka Ponk...
Kim Wilde - Kids in America:
and Shaka Ponk's version:

and LPs.Very esoteric, experimental,
psychedelic piece.Cover by Daniela Andrade: Here
on solo electric guitar, she does a little bit of a lisp, not sure if it’s
intentional or not. Still keeps the
dreamy feel of the piece, there is a nice chorus with herself a couple of times,
way back in the mix, with a tiny bit of some kind of keys underpinning that
part. Lovely and turns it into another
thing, entirely, in this singer/songwriter mode
As to "Tomorrow Never Knows":
Yep, I know that one, too, and I thought of it when thinking about this poll. However, it's much closer to the original in its mood, so I like it, but it's by far less, let's say, surprising than the one of Daniela. Also I like Ringo's drumming more for this one, and the no drums approach has better chances to attract me to a cover than doing things differently from Ringo.

I'm glad you listened to the Sara DeBell version of "Rusty Cage" as I'm not sure if anyone other than you and Nickie actually listened to that one. I put it there to show the contrast further extending the contrast with the original and Johnny Cash's version, showing that you can interpret any song any way you like and almost get a new song out of it.
By the way, that Sara DeBell album "Grunge Lite" is all grunge songs done in a way that almost makes them "supermarket friendly", but it also is quite an interesting collection of deconstructed and then rebuilt songs. Worth a listen.

And suitkees comes in, just under the wire:
suitkees:
Nirvana “Smells Like Teen Spirit”
Very familiar with this tune, of course.
I love Tori Amos’ cover, can’t remember if I included that in the
previous covers poll or not, just for fun.
Covered by Shaka Ponk: Here is another pretty female vocal taking
the song on, and ooooooh! With strings! Loving this.
For some reason, it is so much more ominous to me when a woman sings
this song. She’s joined in with the male
vocal as well, next. This is just so
restrained and spooky. In this version,
the band kicks in full bore after the first couple of verses. Kind of an amalgam of the acoustic way to do
this song, along with the heavy grunge way it was done originally, with some
classical overtones as well, provided by the strings and full chorus. Definitely this one may be a contender for
me. Kim Wild “Kids in America” Very 80’s tune, didn’t remember it at first,
until the chorus. Made for MTV. Cover by Shaka Ponk: This time staying basically true to the heavy
synths and upbeat feel of the original, but it’s quite a bit heavier. The kids were so much more optimistic in the
early 80’s! I like this a lot better,
though. 😊

If there is still time, here is another pair: The second movement of Haydn's symphony No. 94. First, the original version:
And here is the Hoffnung Music Festival take on the same movement.

As much as I enjoy these polls, I just can't seem to put in the time that I would like to with everything else that I am doing in the site. I'm afraid I'll have to bow out as far as participating, though I've tried to make it last as long as I could. Thanks to everyone for the fun and for sharing. I've become more familiar with some excellent music since this poll started, and thanks to Lorenzo for inviting me along with his excellent idea.
As far as this poll, I will go with my first choice with the song "There's No Way Out" for my nominating song.

^ TCat, sorry for your decision, but all the best to you anyway.
BTW, please put your nominations in your first post here, and put them as the 1st and 2nd videos. I'm requesting this from all of you. There has already been 5 pages here, and my job will be easier if all of you do that. Thanks.

Okay Cristi, I won't make it a problem but was it very hard to edit your post in the first page?

First page was Accept and Therion which I decided not to use in the end.

I've stated my request twice. Wasn't it clear enough? Or is "editing" a demanding job?

I want you to edit your original post and add your nominations as the first and second videos. Therion and Accept can stay under them. But not necessary for you, as I'll not forget this. Haha.

I edited my first post. My nomination is: The second movement of Haydn's 94th symphony.

And concluding (most likely) with The Anders:
The Anders:
Haydn’s “Symphony No. 94,” the 2nd movement. I think most people know at least the basic
melody to this, especially in this forum.
Does have little surprise dynamic changes within a mostly light and lilting
melody. It eventually repeats the
lilting phrases more emphatically and adds swirling strings to the fore in a
merry dance, and then back to the teasing lightness with woodwinds. Strings continue down the lane and are met with
another bout of more dramatic orchestration, ending with soft and sweet. Covered by the Hoffnung Music Festival: Here is the same piece of music, albeit with
VERY big dramatic shifts, done in a comedic way. They continue with this approach with very
slippy-slidy strings when the occasion warrants it and very stern accentuated
parts. This is really fun, overall,
reminds me of Warner Brother’s cartoons.
Certainly Haydn’s intent was to be comedic, as well, though of
course, we don’t have a live recording
of his music with audience from his time.
Can’t help but wonder what he would have thought….was he funny, or would
he be upset?

Meanwhile, anyone can STILL participate. You have more than half a day.
