Welcome to my first Interactive Poll creatorship event! (Anyone can participate BTW...)

I'll keep it short. Nominate a song and a cover version of it (2 songs in total), and then when the voting process is commenced, vote for your 3 favourite options. You can also share other songs, but please put your 2 nominations in your original post.

Note: Please don't vote for your own nominations.

I think a cover is accomplished on condition that your version both reminds one of and alienates one from the original song, yet it is merely my viewpoint and has nothing to do with the rules here. You can come up with anything you like as long as you nominate a song and a cover version of it.

The cover you nominate shouldn't necessarily be a studio recording. It can be a live version too.

Have fun!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

This time I'll nominate a Turkish song and a live cover version of it.

Barış Manço - Dönence: Barış Manço (R.I.P.) was one of the most prominent musicians of my country. His earlier works had even ventured forth into the prog domains, but he became popular (as is easy to guess) with his pop songs. Yet, even his pop style has an edge over the typical pop outputs. I guess he is not that much known globally, but he had many Japanese fans; he gave concerts in their country.

Here is a part of its lyrics' English translation:

I'm in the arms of the pitch-black night, all alone
Somewhere far away, the suns are rising
I know... Dönence (Tropic)

And here is a "crazy" cover of it. The guy here is called "Deli Vahit", which means Crazy Vahit (his name), or Vahit the Mad. Star

Nice theme. Looking forward to hearing what people come up with.

I actually knew "Dönence". A Turkish person I know once introduced me to it. Great song!

What about a new composition to the original lyrics, or translated cover versions?

If the music is totally different, I don't think your first suggestion is counted as a cover. As for the translated cover versions, I think if it gives a "cover feeling", that would be OK.

As you wish. Same lyrics, totally different music:

The song "No Way Out of Here" was made famous when David Gilmour covered it for his solo album.  Most of us here have probably heard that version of it, so I'm not going to post that one even if it is a great version.  Instead, I'm going to post the original version of this song (yes, that's correct, Gilmour didn't write that song contrary to popular opinion).

The song was actually done by a band called "Unicorn" which was kind of a Buffalo Springfield-type band, and it unfortunately gets overlooked.  So I'm going to use the original version first....

Unicorn - "No Way Out of Here"

Now, here is a really great cover of it done by Iron & Wine with Ben Bridwell (from "Band of Horses" who I have posted in the past) singing the lead.  It's also quite an excellent version of the song.

Iron & Wine with Ben Bridwell - "No Way Out of Here"

EDIT:  This is my selection.  The other videos were deleted by request.

There's not a strong tradition for cover versions in Denmark, which makes my selection somewhat difficult. Many of those I do know about sound very commercial. Also, I want to select a cover that is considerably different from the original.

One option I was playing with is an album by Steffen Brandt on which he performs his own translations of Dylan songs, but I generally prefer the original versions. Brandt's versions aren't actually that different in terms of mood. Also the Swedish singer Mikael Wiehe has recorded many Dylan songs in his own translations, but I normally like him best when he sings his own songs.

Then there is music from other countries, but I know too few cover versions there.

Also, I want to like both the original and the cover...

I'm not so big on covers and I still work on the other poll... anyway, I'll come up with something.

My nomination is the second movement of Haydn's symphony No. 94 (known as the "Surprise Symphony"). First, the original version:

And here is the Hoffnung Music Festival take on the same movement.

And here as bonus material: "Carlotta's Galop" is composed by Nino Rota and is used in Fellini's 8 1/2. Here is the orginal version:

And here is a version by Petra Haden:

Went round with a couple of ideas, but came back to this in the end.  I have always loved this song, I first heard the original version by World Party and later, was surprised to see it covered, as below, by Eliza Gilkyson.  These are not so different as say, Dylan's and Hendrix's "All Along The Watchtower," but I feel that they are complementary pieces, as the original is sort of an alt/rock treatment and Gilkyson gives it a more Americana feel.  There were some others, like I said, but I don't think I've brought World Party to this party before.  Smile

Coincidentally, I had been listening for the past month or so to this music collective that does rock & metal covers with a brass band, so I will go with a cover by them. The hard part was deciding on what. A lot of the originals they cover are by Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, Tool, and other bands that fall in that genre. Feeling some leftover protest from Lorenzo's poll, I went with a cover of this classic, which everyone knows.

Black Sabbath "War Pigs"

Though I could have chosen a lesser known song, this cover just rocks in my opinion. The horns absolutely get it down and the singer sings the sh*t out of the song.

Brass Against ft. Maya Azucena "War Pigs"

A bit more about Brass Against. Quoting their description from their website.
Quote In this politically challenging era, it’s time to stand up against the machine. Brass Against is a collective of artists, led and curated by Brad Hammonds, who share in the goal of creating brass protest music that calls fans to action. We want the music we perform to sound inspiring and resonate with people’s emotions, encouraging them to act. We combine rock and edgy hip-hop to play music that's powerful and empowering. Brass Against is exceptional music with a political edge.

Also, I can't resist posting this bonus. Not just a war pig, but a pig.

MetalTrump "War Pigs"

Edit to add. Ah, didn't notice the other Sabbath cover in this poll. I am still sticking with this. Can never have too much Sabbath.

Apparently I should put my nomination in my first post, which is this.
Tomorrow Never Knows, The Beatles & Daniela Andrade

Out of competition:

Steve Hackett's Spectral Mornings and its cover version with lyrics would probably be too prog, wouldn't it? ... and too well known, I guess you all know the original at least.
