Or Jerry Goodman.

Oh how you slighted David Cross with his exclusion from this poll.

as I said in my initial post: I am certain I missed a lot that need to be mentioned. Jerry Goodman of The Flock and The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Lakshminarayana Shankar of Shakti are two other examples of serious oversight by me

Then please forgive the fact that I mentioned it.

I know this is supposed to be about violin playing only but Robby's voice is what made Kansas great.

Though this poll is almost four years old, I had to go searching for previous threads about prog violinists because I've only JUST DISCOVERED J-R Fusion pioneer MICHAL URBANIAK. I have been blown away not just by his innovative sound (he J-L- Ponty-ed the processed electric violin sound long before J-L P, L. Shankar, and/or ARTI E MESTIERI's Giovanni Vigliar ever did) but by his ability to surround himself with incredible musicians with which he could push the envelope of seriously great composition and jazz-funk sound as well as by his tremendous discography: the dude released--as a band leader/composer--over a dozen studio albums in the Seventies, pioneered the melodic synth funk that J-L P and Arti E Mestieri later copied and perfected, pioneered the Acid Jazz movement, and never stopped recording and touring or re-inventing himself to the end! And yet there are so few reviews here on PA--so few of us who have even heard of the dude--despite the fact that he has been living and recording as an American since 1973! 31 studio albums between 1968 and 2009! John Davies (Mellotron Storm), Scott from The Idiocracy (Evolver), Slava Gliozeris (snobb), and now me, are the only people here on PA who lay claim to giving this amazing artist his due! Let the word out! Michal Urbaniak's discography is at the top end of the Jazz-Rock Fusion hierarchy. And the dude was not only a virtuoso violinist and composer of the very highest caliber but a Montreux Jazz Festival award-winning saxophonist (in 1971 after teaching himself the sax)!!! How could this guy have not received his due props?!!!

Thomas Schmidt, from German Symphonic Prog band "Pell Mell"...especially his endearing transcription of Smetana's "The Moldau" from the Pell Mell debut album "Marburg"
