I just love wild violin, and all of these violinists can go really wild. I am certain I forgot a lot, so please feel free to name them. these were just the first that came to my mind. many of them are actually multi-instrumentalists

I would have voted for "Violinski" of ELO if he'd been on the list. Smile

I think I prefer Eddie Jobson. Still, he isn't only a violinist. He is a great keyboardist too. So, he is a very complete musician. Unfortunately, he is one of the most underrated prog musicians. So, Jobson is to me. He's one of my favourite prog artsits, really.

Ponty, followed by Jobson and Steinhardt. There are plenty of fine players in the Prog Folk category, although we might technically call them fiddlers.

I am still quite blown away by L. Shankar--and not just by his ten-stringed, double neck electric violin, but by the skill he exhibited even before he started playing that monster. I've also been quite enamored of the work done by Shankar's older brother, Lakshminarayana Subramanian--especially when working with Usted Ali Akbar Khan.

Both Lakshminarayanan brothers have been at the fore front of the whole East-West fusion, each collaborating with an incredibly impressive list of Western artists, including, but not limited to John Handy, Stéphane Grappelli, Larry Coryell, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussein, Frank Zappa, Peter Gabriel, Yehudi Mehunin, Jean-Pierre Rampal, Ruggiero Ricci, Joe Sample, Stanley Clarke, Chick Corea, George Harrison, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John, Steve Vai, Ginger Baker, and Jean-Luc Ponty.

Ah, Clog Dance. The man with the blue violin. I think he is still performing these days on one the offshoots of ELO. I think I liked Wilf Gibson a bit better. Gibson also performed on KC's Islands album.

From the list I picked Lockwood.

Chris Karrer is probably not the best when it comes to vituosity, but the use of violin in ADII just appeals to me so he gets my vote. Graham Smith's appearance in The Quiet Zone/The Pleasure Dome is awesome and I wish VDGG had more with him. Darryl Way next and then Didier Lockwood.

Lambrecht and Kihlstedt are great (don't know Mlodecka), and I add Iva Bittova.

Jobson. He also played on the Viva Roxy Music live album where his violin work overshadows the keyboard stuff.
I also like Robbie Steinhardt , Jean Luc Ponty and Darryl Way from that list.
Jerry Goodman also worth a mention. He released an excellent instrumental album On The Future Of Aviation in the 80's , worth checking out.

Hi,

I specially liked his duet with the electric guitar in "Apocaliptyc Bore" ... and in general, how he uses his violin is amazing, and unlike many of the other "musicians". And this guy is a Sufi master! For him, the use of the instrument is something that we do not usually think of in "westernized commercial music".

Of all these, and I have heard them all, Simon House is very special because what he added to HAWKWIND is something that added tremendously to the music ... and it's hard to not think of his ability as a keyboard player which was also magnificent and brought HAWKWIND to a more modern sound than the electronics of before.

Darryl Way is very fine, and his ability with Curved Air is magnificent, and then with Wolf. On his own and with Gong, I do not think he was as strong, and I think he might have been discouraged by it all.

Graham Smith, has always had an incredible list of stuff going back to the very early days before String Driven Thing, and his work with PH was very nice, but I think that he felt limited that he could not add more to the whole thing, but you never really saw that with the saxophone as an issue with PH.

JLP is not one of my favorites, although he has some really good stuff, and seeing him with RTF is a treat ... and I wish he would do more with them, if the opportunity was there. His many solo albums come and go ... and always have one or two things that are very nice. However, when I heard him with Jon Anderson, it was sad ... and it was obvious that he wanted to do more with his violin, but was having to be in the background and consequently his work suffered. Nice, but not great. His stuff with FZ is nice, ... but I always think that it is more FZ than it is JLP.

Eddie Jobson is OK with me, and his best stuff is ... probably in his earlier days when he helped Roxy Music some ... but I also like his stuff with Curved Air. After that, I am not sure ... it is obvious that he is a master musician, but I am not sure that he ever really "showed" that he was the super violin player that the others are.

Dave Swarbrick of Fairport Convention deserves a mention here ... his work with the band from the early days to his end, is special indeed, and one ought to catch the improvisations that you can find in some films here and there with Richard Thompson, and how he handled himself ... very well. Special is the only word for it.

Though this poll is almost four years old, I had to go searching for previous threads about prog violinists because I've only JUST DISCOVERED J-R Fusion pioneer MICHAL URBANIAK. I have been blown away not just by his innovative sound (he J-L- Ponty-ed the processed electric violin sound long before J-L P, L. Shankar, and/or ARTI E MESTIERI's Giovanni Vigliar ever did) but by his ability to surround himself with incredible musicians with which he could push the envelope of seriously great composition and jazz-funk sound as well as by his tremendous discography: the dude released--as a band leader/composer--over a dozen studio albums in the Seventies, pioneered the melodic synth funk that J-L P and Arti E Mestieri later copied and perfected, pioneered the Acid Jazz movement, and never stopped recording and touring or re-inventing himself to the end! And yet there are so few reviews here on PA--so few of us who have even heard of the dude--despite the fact that he has been living and recording as an American since 1973! 31 studio albums between 1968 and 2009! John Davies (Mellotron Storm), Scott from The Idiocracy (Evolver), Slava Gliozeris (snobb), and now me, are the only people here on PA who lay claim to giving this amazing artist his due! Let the word out! Michal Urbaniak's discography is at the top end of the Jazz-Rock Fusion hierarchy. And the dude was not only a virtuoso violinist and composer of the very highest caliber but a Montreux Jazz Festival award-winning saxophonist (in 1971 after teaching himself the sax)!!! How could this guy have not received his due props?!!!
