Still CTTE for me. The apex of symphonic progressive rock. The only band that dethrones Genesis is Yes.

I can't disagree with that but while I prefer Yes over all I think close to the edge(the song)repeats itself too much and isn't quite as interesting or exciting as Supper's Ready. Plus what's up with part in the middle where it sounds like water is dripping?

"The" prog epic is probably either CTTE or Supper's Ready... but TAAB is the one I prefer to listen to.

Too much saxophone??!!! Is that a thing? |

No, I know how to behave in the restaurant now, I don't tear at the meat with my hands. If I've become a man of the world somehow, that's not necessarily to say I'm a worldly man.

Trust me, I get it, lol. Anderson was obsessed with sound samples; the birds during the opening were his idea, water dripping is ALWAYS a Jon Anderson idea - he wanted bathroom tiles for simulated reverb on vocals on TFTO, lol. Total Mass Retain is a very under-appreciated section of prog music IMHO! It has the most dynamic of almost the entire song!

Although I love CTTE and TAAB, for me is SR the winner anyway. I've heard it around 1982-83 for the first time and even after such a long time I immensely enjoy every listening to it till today. And Apocalypse in 9/8 section - it's maybe the best moment in prog music for me :-)

Aye....when a sax solo makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up like a solo by Hackett or Stolt I will.change my mind..sax is a jazz instrument not prog..... Edited by M27Barney - July 10 2020 at 14:14 |

Right, and guitar is a rock instrument, not prog, So Steve Hackett is a rock musician, and therefore equally exempt from your own logic as sax playing.

Sorry but Scorched Earth by VDGG might be my favourite prog track and the sax is what really makes it. I get goosebumps every time. The only time when I got annoyed with the inclusion is when Tangerine Dream included it on their 90's albums. It was a case of well we've got no ideas , so over to you Mrs Sax Player , make something up and fill in the holes. It can feel a bit like that at times admittedly. |
