Don't own either LP....wouldn't play either LP.

If I'm given a choice, I prefer to listen to The Missing Piece over Abacab.

How are Abacab, Dodo/Lurker, Keep It Dark, Me And Sarah Jane, and Man On The Corner not progressive? Weird time signatures? Check. Synth obsession? Check. Sci-fi/fantasy lyrics? Check. Unorthodox arrangements and multi-part structures? Check and check. Does No Reply At All just nullify everything else?

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

Genesis were caught in the dichotomy of tryimg to appeal to teeny boppers whilst not alienating their current fanbase...the title is w**k the album art fookin awful and the musical content shallow and trite...but if you like it, play it...some people like all kinds of stuff that other people hate...but Don't try and pretend it is prog...it's not... Abacab never clicks on me, for me its a mixed bag, its not progresive enough and its not a perfect pop album

Out of curiosity, what is it about Abacab that so many people hate it? To me it seems like the most progressive of Genesis' 80s albums (yes, Duke included).

I consider "Giant for a day" the worst of GG albums, and "Abacab" its awful but not the worst album by Genesis (for me its "Invisible Touch") if you include "Open Your Eyes" by Yes we have clearly the winner of the stinkiest album ever.
I prefer "The Missing Piece" i enjoy 3 songs "Memories Of Old Days", "Two Weeks In Spain" and "For Nobody"

Nothing can be as bad as Invisible Touch. Gentle Giant doesn't have anything bad.

Same here. I was just waiting for someone else to vote for that option first.

Neither is the worst by either band so I voted "like em both."

Like it or not , I like 'em both. For different reasons, but I like them anyway.
3-stars each.

I think Civilian is much better, more interesting than Abacab. Oh well...

Keep It Dark is one of my favourite Genesis songs, while the title track and Dodo/Lurker are excellent as well. The rest I don't care for much. Not that familiar with the GG album but like most people I just don't care for anything they did post Interview. Genesis at least still put some prog out up to We Can't Dance (Fading Lights is excellent imo)

Not prime Gentle Giant, but it sure beats ABACAB. Might have been closer if you had chosen Civilian though.
Nice to see another old Elizabeth Sladen fan out there! |
