Think I know who'll win this, but voting should be interesting.

Other: Jethro Tull and Horslips; mostly for prog folk/flute compositions. Barry Devlin, the band leader of Horslips was/is a Tull appreciator and there are a few Horslips tracks that hark back to Tull e.g. Second Avenue (from Aliens) and Teacher, but largely these bands are different animals.

In general, Yes and Genesis are the most lumped together imo.

Classic Yes and Genesis are my two favs---what I love about them is they both have 5 guys who play similar instruments but sound nothing alike---two legendary originals .

I am a huge, huge fan of Horslips and like a lot of Tull as well. I can see some similarities (eg use of flute, concept albums) but Horslips are deeply rooted in Irish folk/myths and are the founders of Celtic Rock. Tull were a blues rock band which explored other formats including prog and prog folk. Horslips were definitely influenced by Tull. Personally, I rate The Tain and The Book of Invasions head of anything Tull did. And Tull never had a re-recording of one of their songs included on a football anthem, either (Put 'em Under Pressure 1990 World Cup)

I guess many see Genesis and Yes as the archetypical prog bands par excellence, so this is where my vote went. There's no doubt in my mind as to which one I prefer though.

Disclaimer: I don't believe they sound remotely like one another. Many folks seem to think Genesis and Marillion sound similar

Except for a few bass lines, I am not sure why anyone can consider Yes and Genesis even remotely comparable: lyrically, vocally, compositionally not comparable. How about Genesis and Big Big Train. Same band from 1976, just updated.

I haven´t ever compare Yes & Genesis, although they are most famous here. I choose Zappa & Beefheart just because they were schoolmates (but made really different music).

![]() probably the most musically valid... but most compared even though there isn't a comparison in substance or style.. or the more subtle aspects.. obviously Yes v. Genesis and that thanks to Genesis fans who torture us with countless threads.. the definitions of insanity hoping to get different results from those outside the cult that laugh at the notion that boring people to death with soporific music, having too clever by half lyrics and still playing small unis while others rock stadiums and made prog popular and taking it to the masses made for any kind of comparison

Return to Forever and Mahavishnu Orchestra get compared often when talking about fusion groups to listen to.

I like the ELP v Triumvirate post! What about Yes and Starcastle, musically-wise too? Didn't Kansas and Styx get compared a lot too in the late 70s in their pomp rock prime? Yes and Genesis always get compared due to them being the 'big two' and often bring out a tribalism amongst fanatics, but musically very different when you get down to it.... but I'm teaching everyone to 'suck eggs' there!

I didn't mean acts that sound a lot alike but one is clearly better than the other, I mean more acts that are often debated which is better. Camel and GG for instance. I mean obviously(as long as you're not breaking forum rules) you can answer this however you want though, and the discussion has definitely been interesting so far.
