S.F. has been almost utopic with far fewer cars & foot traffic, low pollution, and almost zero crime. It's been kinda nice.

It would have been better if he could have clarified precisely what constitutes essential work, though. The Tube, trains, and etc. have been rammed today with commuters.

Did he say essential work though? I may have to go back and listen again but the gist was don't travel to work unless you can't do that work at home.
I'm an accountant and many may consider my work to be non essential ( I wouldn't be offended at all for anyone to say that) but then I am in charge of calculating payroll for many clients. Could they do it themselves? Perhaps but it would be a right mess!
I did go into work today but in the light of the PM's announcement that must surely be it. I don't want to be stopped by the cops and have to explain myself. Its definitely going that way but its has to for the long term good of everyone. My parents are in their 80's , not in the best health and this will literally kill them if they get it.

Is there any reason you couldn't do that accounting work from home? All data you need should be available in a company network, and it would be its responsibility to see that you have access. Why should this be your decision?
I wonder what would happen if companies were given the responsibility of declaring themselves essential or not, and if they think they are, they would be held accountable (no pun intended) for their decision. Why should individual employees be burdened with the responsibility of deciding that?

My personal opinion is that when this whole thing has finally blown over (whenever that may be) the worst thing that can possibly happen is that things go back to the way they were.
This might be a chance to rebuild things better and see to it that human values get restored. I'm just stupid that way.

Well, watching the news this morning, he said don’t go to work unless it is essential that you do so, which is not quite the same as essential work, is it? That is the trouble with policy made up on the hoof, it always leads to more questions than answers (no criticism of him, btw. This is a difficult situation for HMG).
My take on this, and I have had to ask for guidance from senior people in my department, is that you come into work only if that work cannot be done remotely, or that you are engaged in tasks essential to keep this country running essential services and that cannot be done remotely.
In terms of payroll, well people have to be paid, and there will be a lot of agents on the phone or online to HMRC for the government salary scheme, but I would be astounded if that could not be done remotely without the commute.
Of course, Richard, I regard accountancy as an essential job. Your clients keep me in work, after all

Usually I would take economists predictions about the economy with a massive pinch of salt. Soothsayers they ain’t
However, what is certain is that there will have to be changes.
My prediction? Beware the laws of unintended consequences. The simple is is that we do not know, but this will, IMO, be the biggest change in economics and society since the end of the last war.

That's where a lot of us are Rich. There's not enough clarity. I work in crop protection research, which is only essential in the short term in a very round about tenuous way, but we have all these split shifts and isolation practices in place at work right now to minimise contact etc. Many in my team are starting to question if we should be here at all, and I'm inclined to think we shouldn't. I can do most of what I do from home, as can some of my reports but our strategy entails having some management here at all times, so home working, so far has been on a rota. That may change from today, but we're still waiting for an announcement from on high in our company. I don't want to be pulled over by the cops and have to explain myself, but I think it's going down that route, with checkpoints and having to show 'papers' as I believe they are currently having to do in France.

First day of total lockdown, which is pretty much what we were doing anyway as I can work from home permanently. We're allowed one walk a day, so mine will be 20 miles and last for 8 hours.

It has been socially interesting, and a good change of pace.
The people I feel really bad for are the ones who'd just started something like a business, marriage, homeownership, etc.

Trump is apparently planning to send the under 40s back to work on very short notice.
I think that Trump supporters should be required to give the Terminator thumbs-up just before they snuff it in the hospital corridors.
