After watching a Youtube clip of people physically fighting over toilet roll in Australia, and our own supermarket shelves being stripped bare by rabid crowds of dribbling morons here at home, I was wondering if it was time to just lock everyone down under house arrest and disable the internet until people learn to behave.

Ok, in all seriousness is anyone else more bothered by the public reaction, and the media deliberately stoking panic, than they are about the actual virus??

There is a huge negative hype going around the world about this virus. It doesn't serve a purpose, at best. It is like the evil version of Ice Bucket Challenge. Just warn/act, and don't exaggerate to a point of smothering all the public opinion in.

My country Turkey claims that we're clean of the virus still. I doubt it, anyway.

I've not seen much panic buying round my way yet, except you can't get antibacterial handwash (which is ineffective anyway). Tesco have now started limiting the amount you can buy of some goods (pasta, why are people panic-buying pasta? I mean I know it keeps but what are you going to eat with it?).

Me? I'm just going to make sure I have enough whisky to last me a few months.

Bothered? Hmm. That depends if it serves good or bad political purposes. A crass answer but that's how I feel.

I'm not sure what political purpose it could serve, apart from as a distraction from something else going on that they don't want to draw attention to.

It's really sad that Asian people have been beaten up over here due to the virus but then again, it was people in this country who attached a paediatrician's office a few years ago because they didn't know the difference between a paediatrician and a paedophile. Confused

I have just got into London, and travelled on the underground from Paddington to Euston Square. Only a 10 minute journey, but the train was absolutely ram packed.

If this is a modern equivalent to the bubonic plague, and virulent in its spread, Irather feel I might be doomed 🤮

However, what makes me feel a little bit better is the fact that it quite clearly is not the modern equivalent of bubonic plague.

I prefer to keep it cool without worrying. I hope I stay free of it, but if I'll get infected, then so be it .

But again more people get sick and die from just the flu..so why are we getting all uptight?

Likewise; my default position (generally in life) is self isolation, we live in the middle of nowhere on a farm and are fairly self sufficient for most food.. there's plenty of Dock leaves in the fields to wipe my arse on if we run out of toilet roll and I can knock up a cracking Nettle soup/ Quiche (thank goodness the Hens have started laying again!)

It seems strange to me that some people are simultaneously saying: the normal flu is much worse and kills tens of thousands of people a year, and: it's just the flu.

It also seems very strange that the people who are panic buying disinfectants and toilet rolls don't seem to realize that they're preventing others IN THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOODS from disinfecting their hands after they've not been able to wipe their arses after a sh*t.

The markets are freaking out, and that could end up being a bigger story than the virus, after the whole thing has played out. Someone is going to get very rich on the back of all this.

Yes, and just mentioning the biological weapons facility developing SARS-based viruses just down the road from that food market is akin to spreading malicious rumors and conspiracy theories. I did notice on the news last night that they quickly mentioned that the new hospitals China built in a hurry for the virus are now emptying out and they moved onto to a longer piece about a bloke stockpiling bog rolls. Confused

Well, that's essentially what happened after 2008. The banks were bailed and the debt passed on to everyone else, while the speculators cleaned up. The system is apparently designed to work like that. Ron Paul had the right idea; make it clear to the banks that if they fail, they're on their own, and the architects of the collapse go to jail.

We only have China's word that it's under control. Their record on truth is even worse than our own. I wouldn't be surprised if it was dangerously out of control over there.

Some points;

1. Idiots claiming the common flu each year is worse. Well, COVID 19 is already a much bigger pandemic than SARS and MERS combined and has already taken more lives than SARS and MERS combined.

2. Anti-bacterial face masks and hand cleansers are USELESS against a virus. Surgeons all over the world are pleading - stop buying up all our face masks, we need them so that bacteria from us doesn't infect the person on the operating table.

3. I am not worried about the hysteria and panic buying, I live in rural Sweden, I haven't seen any of it. The only thing that worries me is the virus itself and protecting my sick 16 year old son from it.

We are out of hand sanitizer in the stores here, but I haven't checked the toilet paper situation yet. Gee, I might have to use paper towels and other stuff I can't flush down the toilet. Shocked

In all seriousness, if epidemiologists and virologists are telling people over 80, people with pre-existing conditions, and compromised immune systems to avoid crowds and make sure they have enough supplies then maybe this is something a bit more than "just the flu." This hoarding is keeping those most vulnerable from getting the resources they need, especially if they need to isolate themselves for an extended period of time.

Also, what Swedish doctors are saying is that warm water and soap is more effective against the fatty shell of the virus and removes it more effectively than alcohol based sanitisers and anti-bacterials. Any surgeon will tell you it is the process of the brisk movement, as they themselves do, when washing their hands that is of most importance not the medium being used.

Everything I have read from the medical end simply states to take the same precautions you do with preventing influenza. Being CLEAN is the most important, washing your hands often and especially after coming in contact with groups or simply going to the store. Limit hand shaking and hugs for now........
I can't imagine any doctor saying "don't use antibacterial products", its something and it helps clean your hands, with simple soap and warm water being the best option.

If you become sick with a fever then you are in a different genre of people.......You should not go anywhere!!

I am 100% confident in the US medical system that it will be controlled sooner than later. I am not sure about the comment that "America dont understand"?? Confused Reports I hear and read about that there are several vaccines ready for testing, although that will take time.

My local SuperWalmart has been out of toilet paper since the weekend, no bleach and very little cleaning products on the shelves....People clearly panic and bought all of it, not sure why.

Don't worry, we understand it's bad. It almost wrecked our economy and many started die in the US. We can't do much without the necessary testing equipment but our stupid government is trying.

While people are freaking out with useless and quite often damaging anti-bacterials all over the place and themselves and "killing 99% of all known household germs" as the British tv Domestos ad used to say, it is a very good time to remind people that we live in an extremely necessary symbiosis with bacteria, they protect us from a lot and keeo us healthy in many ways, but most importantly bacteria can and do attack viruses, for example,
the CRISPR-Cas system in some bacteria helps to form an effective barrier to invading viruses. These viruses – known as phages – attach to the surface of bacterial cells, inject their genetic material, and use the cells' enzymes to multiply while destroying their hosts.

It's neither. The whole thing is financed by George Soros. From an ideological point of view, the Klimazi's (Al Gore, Gretel Thunberg and the Franzlführer1 a.o.) are the ones who benefit most from it. This Corona thing helps to reduce flights (exactly what Franzl wants to impose on European citizens) and CO2.

Together with regular hygiene practices like washing your hands using a soap, avoiding touching your face outdoors etc., experts also advised the use of cologne here. It seems most people are convinced. I'll only wash my hands a little more often than normal, instead. That should -or hopefully would- suffice.

Here’s something. Just got news today, on my 19th birthday that the rest of my college semester will be moved to online classes. Little is known now, but I’m a music major, classical piano. I don’t know what’s going to happen to my lessons, the ensembles I’m accompanying for and playing in, the aural skills classes. I don’t know how on earth this is going to work. I’m pissed and worried. I’ve been enjoying school so much, it feels like I can’t catch a break recently.

Sounds like you hit a sour note. Sorry to hear your semester is in treble, and now you're playing the blues, but it's just a minor interlude. On the bright side, no need to feel flat, the diminished scale of work leaves you open for other arrangements. Compose yourself, that's the relative key to inner harmony. So take note, go out and do something, nothing major is necessary -- that's the tonic! After all, every good boy deserves favour.

Quite a news cycle. Trump imposes travel restrictions with Europe, Tom Hanks has the coronavirus, and the NBA season is suspended indefinitely.

The university I work for has also cancelled in-person classes until April 6 and moved them online. I still have to go to work at the moment. Not sure if that will change. There are many things I can accomplish from home. The way things are going at the moment, it wouldn't surprise me if they extend that way past April 6. Hope they nip this in the bud soon. I understand the mortality rate in Italy is at 5% now, mostly due to having an older population. I've got older relatives I'm really concerned about here in the U.S. Some of the predictions some doctors are now saying are much more dire than I ever expected.

I’m looking at a forced 2 week vacation from work. Sure I’ll miss my little autist buddies taken straight out of Monty Python’s Flying Circus...but yeah not ALL is doom and gloom regarding the ol corona. Ahem

Then again..I can also vividly imagine having to be one of the only people who has to go to work, simply because I am one of the few there who actually can be around all the kids.
Feck...I celebrated too soon

I'm keeping my son home from school, elementary school, as there was a case at the high school a few minutes walk away (where my daughter went to school). He was sick with the stomach flu for over a week anyway, and Spring Break is almost here. I'm picking up and driving my wife to work (she's an engineer in biotech) so she doesn't have to be on the crowded public transit. Her heart attacks put her at more risk. I work mostly from home anyway. I was planning to go to Australia soon to go to my brother's wedding, but have decided against it.

There are a number of confirmed cases in the area where I live, and I expect quite a few more in this neighborhood.

I'm expecting that all pro sports will be postponed or cancelled, MLB has yet to make a call, but right now Seattle Mariners are looking for a place to play in April since no gatherings of 250+ are allowed in Seattle. Once this becomes more the case MLB will have no choice but to postpone the season, that's crazy.

Our local HS spring sports have been postponed and will probably be cancelled is my guess, season is too short. I coach HS lacrosse and we are not part of HS sports but we follow their rules in most cases for things like eligibility, I expect our season will be either shortened or cancelled.

I would not be surprised if this virus is not controlled soon that Washington state gov will impose some curfews to make those that work in office to go home rather than go to restaurants or bars after work. Even the thought of closing off county lines, nobody in or out for a month has been discussed I heard.

Friends of mine in leadership roles in both the health care industry and emergency response are now saying that one-third to one-half of all Americans will contract COVID-19. 75-150 million Americans at a 3.5% death rate equals 2.65 million to 5.25 million American deaths at the end of this round (there are more rounds predicted for the 2020-2021 flu season).

My point is: This seems to be real, not hype. Fear is a normal and acceptable response to looming mortality.

Good luck, everybody!

The only thing is that current death rate estimates based on registered cases are probably overestimates, because many more milder than serious cases are in all likelihood not tested and counted. It's hard to estimate the true mortality because it depends on things that are not directly observable, but somewhere between 0.5 and 2% seems more realistic than 3.5%.

This is fair enough, but it doesn't detract from the seriousness of the situation. We know that a lot of people who get the virus will have only mild symptoms. A lot of others will get seriously ill, and some of them will die.

I don't get the craze over testing other than to give health providers a rough number of who's infected.   Testing does nothing to help people who may be ill, and with this virus it's just a few days before those numbers change.   We don't need testing, we need easy-use home ventilators for those whose lungs are unhealthy and may collect fluid.   Beyond that, people should be doing what they should every flu season: hygiene, good diet & exercise, and common sense.   Testing does nothing to help people at risk.   It's become a red herring.

I understand your point of view David, but you can't fight your enemy if you don't know where he is. And by that I mean forgoing quarantining people who shouldn't be and quarantining the ones who should be. Without testing, we're just guessing.

I understand that and I'm not against it, but it does nothing to actually help people, it just provides numbers to doctors that will change soon anyway.   If a community can't handle the patients that need care, testing does nothing to change that.

What we need en masse are not test kits, but home ventilators and plenty of flu medicine so if you do get it at least you can have some small comfort at home.

Yea the whole testing thing seems to me just something else to add to all the stress. You don't need a test to know if you have the flu, you need a thermometer as fever is the main symptom. If you get flu like symptoms and also fever then you need to self quarantine.

The other thing is so what if we had 10 million test kits?? You swab your mouth/throat and send it off to a lab and wait for results. This is the main issue, getting test results back......normally you go to the dr and get a test done blood or other and its few days to a week for results. People are yelling because they want it back in 5 minutes....mis-informed people.
To do that you would have to make all the labs drop everything and only process these swabs....not realistic.

I'm very pleased at what President Trump and VP Pence have put together with Walmart, Target, CVS, Walgreens, Quest Labs and others just now....That's massive to get all those people to work together to slow the spread and help those in the high risk areas.

I'm looking at Trump's national emergency speech right now.
Like yesterday's Oval Office speech, I'm wondering how it's possible that someone can f*ck up a pre-written delivery so thoroughly.
As the inflection is all wrong, it's obvious that he's not understanding large parts of what he's reading. It's amazing!
It's like watching someone during an acting audition who has been given a script just a few seconds earlier with no knowledge of the script, the role, or the circumstances. The struggle is painful to watch.

And has anyone noticed how the people standing behind him during these occasions seem to be suffering from a severe case of bobble-head?
