But all joking aside, I have 2 very elderly in laws, 1 of whom has chronic long term COPD and whilst they seem pretty relaxed, my dear wife (and I) do have real anxieties about them. I guess this maybe something that is true of many of us here.

Was to the supermarket yesterday, no shortages. The Italian government got this right probably, they promised food stores and supermarkets remain open and well supplied. People seem to accept that here.

^brilliant! LOL

Meanwhile, back here in dear old Blighty, a very worrying development. My niece, who is visiting for the weekend, has just seen something on her Facebook thingy; a report that a leaked government document has been seen which states that Boris and the boffins are to order the closure of all pubs in the U.K.

f**k meAngry the closure of my beloved local? What has the world come to?

One of two courses of action seem to me to be sensible in such dire circumstances.

1. Get out my old, hole ridden, Che Guevara t-shirt, beret, and kickstart the glorious revolution
2. Go down to The Prince of Wales and advise the landlady, with my senior leader in government hat on, to immediately reclassify her premises as a “community hub”, or “local farming collective premises”. Anything other than a boozer.

Bloody hell. This is now becoming acutely serious. I am, therefore, off down the road immediately, whilst I still canOuch

Yes, on an equally serious note, my wife and I care for my mother in law, who has a history of heart problems, so we are, of course, observing simple and basic hygiene rules. Having said that, we do so anyway.

All of us, though, remain utterly bemused by the hype and ridiculous coverage of this. We are determined to carry on living our life for the unique joy and blessing it is without becoming reduced to quivering wrecks (and I know that was not your point in postingSmile)

Boris Johnson's politics is criminal

(This is an Italian article, that I have translated with gogle)

Hundreds of members of the BRITISH scientific community have sent two open letters to the UK Government, expressing strong concern about the approach taken against the spread of Coronavirus in the country. In a letter, 198 academics in mathematics and science called for urgent measures of social distancing, calling the government's strategy of developing herd immunity an option that "does not seem viable". In another letter, 164 behavioural scientists questioned Downing Street's contention that if drastic measures are imposed on the public too soon, they will eventually return to previous behaviour.

So far the UK government has refused to take social initiatives, such as closing schools or even closing the nation like other European countries, advising self-isolation for anyone showing symptoms of Coronavirus. For the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, measures against the spread of Coronavirus are useless. To avoid contagion, the development of 'herd immunity' would be sufficient. Herd immunity occurs when a large number of people are immunized and or vaccinated, if there is a vaccine, against an infection. In the case of the current virus there is still no vaccine and when there will be it will be necessary to assess the effectiveness of the vaccine on people. If the vaccine works, all vaccinated people will act as a barrier to the spread of the infection. Boris Johnson's recipe is considered ruthless by many epidemiologists and unable to stem the pandemic.

Walter Ricciardi, a consultant to the Ministry of Health and a member of the Committee of Civil Protection Experts, points out that without a vaccine immunity is not certain and that in the UK the decision taken in an attempt to block Coronavirus is not ethical. Johnson's exhortation is to listen to his epidemiologists. ""I think we'll see more specific therapy than a vaccine first. It is absolutely unethical to accept that people get sick in order to create an immunity of flocks which is not even safe; because it is a new virus and there are still no scientific confirmations on a lasting immunity after the disease. Those who have been infected could also take it back as far as we know at the moment." Walter Ricciardi, in an interview with Repubblica, specifies how: "Our Government has received all the indications of the scientific community, which the English one is not doing. Yet they have epidemiologists from imperial College London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a journal like Lancet. They would be top-notch public health advisers who are obviously ignoring them.' The United Kingdom, Ricciardi points out, in this way "runs the risk of being invested more violently than the others and above all can become the area that keeps the infection alive and latent, when others have already managed to contain it. Thus it becomes what no one would want to be considered: the aor of the world."

an interesting take as well...

Lord knows we've seen a lot of pooh poohing and flat out head in the sand about this. It is just the flu.. or it will go away when it gets warm.  Everything will back to normal in a few weeks..  it is highly likely we haven't seen the worst of this. Might explain why BoJo is doing what he is.. and over here. While our buffoon of a President is more concerned about the economic side of this than the human cost (ie his reelection)

yes he really did sign a poster with the upward tick in the stock market after his emergency declaration.. wow..

anyhow.. perhaps the 'slow' response here and there might be a blessing of sorts for if this continues for weeks.. months...  you really can't lock people down for that long.  No fan of BoJo's I am.. but it should be considered that he might be dealing with this the right way.. people are going to die with this.. what government has to do is limit it and still have something left standing.. like jobs and an economy left once it does burn itself out.

As this virus mainly seems to target society's 'undesirables', what concrete action do you expect from a Trump administration?

exactly what we've seen from it for the last 3 years...  zero emphathy.. zero regard to anyone other than himself and he has based his reelection solely based on that stock market..

I mean who is lead man on all his disaster meetings.. it isn't scientists or health officials.. but Larry f**king Kudlow

You're right and I absolutely agreeClap We've done a fair bit of care work between our families and so are well drilled in hygiene rules etc so this is just a small step up really in that regards. And yes, we have just got to get on and live our lives- there has been so much mixed messaging and over saturation of often conflicting advice in the media.. and much of it rather patronizing in tone. We are really fortunate where we are and, for my wife and I its not going to make much difference what happens outside. But lots of peoples businesses and livelihoods are going to go down the drain and just add another huge burden for them after Floods, an utterly impossible farming situation (we are going to have a real sh*t storm down the line due the appalling weather since last October added with the post-Brexit situation in terms of UK farming and Horticulture)… Anyway, enough of the doom and gloom- Sorry!Embarrassed

Hope Winters end does happen, I haven't heard anything, have you?

After the media has ramped up the hysteria, coupled with the effects of the deliquesces of the Trump admins, this has been the outcome: People packed into food stores like sardines breathing all over each other just so they can run home and lock themselves away from the rest of humanity to wait out the virus like doomsdayers in their bomb shelters. And then be absolutely perplexed as to why some of them contracted the virus while in their blissful state of isolation later on. If this isn't the very definition of madness, then I don't know what is. Confused
