Topic: "Classics" Prog Posted: October 10 2016 at 17:13 |
Three classic prog tracks that draw inspiration from classical, or more specifically Greek, mythology. Which one do you prefer?

Salmacis. It is far more memorable than the other two.

It may be just be a redone version of Epitaph, but Poseidon is still pretty good. Three Fates is one of the more tolerable ELP tracks (the debut album isnt bad actually). The keyboard flourish may sound great, but Salmacis has always been dull and forgettable to me. One of the Genesis tracks I understand the praise for the least.

In the Wake of Poseidon easily for me. Among the three mellotron dominant Lake sung songs from early King Crimson, this one is my least favourite, but still a wonderful song. Fountain of Salmacis is the kind of songs I don't really like from Genesis, though perhaps if I find the right version I might grow to like it (just like Watcher of the Skies, which never did anything for me on it's original version... except perhaps annoy me a bit, but the live version from Hackett on Tokyo Tapes, with Wetton on vocals, is just amazingly cool for me).

Wake of Poseidon for me, followed at a fair distance by Salmacis. I love Hackett's work, especially his slower solo at the end, but In The Wake of Poseidon has always been a more immersive mythological experience; I feel like I'm standing atop Mount Olympus every time I put it on.

The Fountain of Salamacis was the first Genesis track I heard (on the Charisma Keyboards sampler) and I went out and bought the album immediately. Amazing and light years ahead of the other two tracks.

Genesis I like the KC song a lot as well As for ELP's debut, I haven't listened to that in a really long time, when I'm in the mood for ELP, I usually listen to Tarkus, Trilogy or Pictures...

The Genesis and ELP tracks are personal favourites, but since Genesis is easily winning this, I voted for ELP. By the way, where's Eloy?

I'd pick King Crimson over Genesis and ELP any day, but in this competition "In the Wake" only makes the third place. I like The Three Fates but the long piano part is a too off-showing for me. When Genesis get it right, they get it really right, and Salamacis is such a case.
