Three classic prog tracks that draw inspiration from classical, or more specifically Greek, mythology. Which one do you prefer?

Salmacis. It is far more memorable than the other two.

Genesis - The Fountain of Salmacis, is more significant in Genesis career in relation to  others  !

It may be just be a redone version of Epitaph, but Poseidon is still pretty good. Three Fates is one of the more tolerable ELP tracks (the debut album isnt bad actually). The keyboard flourish may sound great, but Salmacis has always been dull and forgettable to me. One of the Genesis tracks I understand the praise for the least.

Genesis for me since I haven't listened to the other two bands for years.

In the Wake of Poseidon easily for me. Among the three mellotron dominant Lake sung songs from early King Crimson, this one is my least favourite, but still a wonderful song. Fountain of Salmacis is the kind of songs I don't really like from Genesis, though perhaps if I find the right version I might grow to like it (just like Watcher of the Skies, which never did anything for me on it's original version... except perhaps annoy me a bit, but the live version from Hackett on Tokyo Tapes, with Wetton on vocals, is just amazingly cool for me).

Wake of Poseidon for me, followed at a fair distance by Salmacis. I love Hackett's work, especially his slower solo at the end, but In The Wake of Poseidon has always been a more immersive mythological experience; I feel like I'm standing atop Mount Olympus every time I put it on.

The Fountain of Salamacis was the first Genesis track I heard (on the Charisma Keyboards sampler) and I went out and bought the album immediately. Amazing and light years ahead of the other two tracks.

Genesis
I like the KC song a lot as well
As for ELP's debut, I haven't listened to that in a really long time, when I'm in the mood for ELP, I usually listen to Tarkus, Trilogy or Pictures... Embarrassed

The Genesis and ELP tracks are personal favourites, but since Genesis is easily winning this, I voted for ELP. By the way, where's Eloy? Tongue

I'd pick King Crimson over Genesis and ELP any day, but in this competition "In the Wake" only makes the third place. I like The Three Fates but the long piano part is a too off-showing for me. When Genesis get it right, they get it really right, and Salamacis is such a case.

Three classics for sure, but I vote for KC here.

The Fountain of Salmacis by the mighty GENESIS. Young gods, they barely were 22 then...

https://youtu.be/zE3dYof_rbE

"The Fountain of Salmacis"

[Hermaphrodite:]
a flower containing both male and female organs;
a person or animal of both sexes.

The child Hermaphroditus was the son of Hermes and Aphrodite,
the result of a secret love affair. For this reason he was
entrusted to the nymphs of the isolated Mount Ida,
who allowed him to grow up as a wild creature of the woods. After his
encounter with the water-nymph Salmacis, he laid a
curse upon the water. According to fable, all persons who bathed in the
water became hermaphrodites.

From a dense forest of tall dark pinewood,
Mount Ida rises like an island.
Within a hidden cave, nymphs had kept a child;
Hermaphroditus, son of gods, so afraid of their love.

As the dawn creeps up the sky
The hunter caught sight of a doe.
In desire for conquest,
He found himself within a glade he'd not beheld before.

[Hermaphroditus:]
"Where are you, my father?
Give wisdom to your son"

[Narrator:]
"Then he could go no farther
Now lost, the boy was guided by the sun"

And as his strength began to fail
He saw a shimmering lake.
A shadow in the dark green depths
Disturbed the strange tranquility.

[Salmacis:]
"The waters are disturbed
Some creature has been stirred"

[Narrator:]
"The waters are disturbed
Naiad queen Salmacis has been stirred"

As he rushed to quench his thirst,
A fountain spring appeared before him
And as his heated breath brushed through the cool mist,
A liquid voice called, "Son of gods, drink from my spring".

The water tasted strangely sweet.
Behind him the voice called again.
He turned and saw her, in a cloak of mist alone
And as he gazed, her eyes were filled with the darkness of the lake.

[Salmacis:]
"We shall be one
We shall be joined as one"

[Narrator:]
"She wanted them as one
Yet he had no desire to be one"

[Hermaphroditus:]
"Away from me cold-blooded woman
Your thirst is not mine"

[Salmacis:]
"Nothing will cause us to part
Hear me, O Gods"

Unearthly calm descended from the sky
And then their flesh and bones were strangely merged
Forever to be joined as one.

The creature crawled into the lake.
[A fading voice was heard:]
"And I beg, yes I beg that all who touch this spring
May share my fate"

[Salmacis:]
"We are the one
We are the one"

[Narrator:]
"The two are now made one,
Demi-god and nymph are now made one"

Both had given everything they had.
A lover's dream had been fulfilled at last,
Forever still beneath the lake.

You need a certain number of points (40 if I'm not mistaken). Keep participating and you'll be there soon.

Indeed. I was there. GENESIS REVISITED EXTENTED LIVE April 2014 shaked the venue with sheer power. Yes, my best ever gig, obviously I never saw GENESIS LIVE with maestro Peter Gabriel forty years ago.

Nad Sylvan nailed it. If they ever will do it again (Iīm praying for) just donīt miss it.

I need explanation here. Still I can't say why and how a piece is regarded as showing off. Would you regard a classical piano piece which is very technical as being made to show off?
This "long" (???) piano part is first of all played with very subtle intonation and emotion (just listen close). It has quite some compositional value and is very innovative. Besides it is hard to play indeed, but please tell me if hard to play means showing off and if no where you then do base your statement on.

I like all three, but the edge goes to the maestro that is Keith Emerson!
