Every once in a blue moon that I stop by on this forum still as a newbie I'm astounded either by some unique and weird music.. or some other non-musical weirdness. No idea who Steve is, neither what stuff 'sucks' on here, but this time you put that pretty hilarious movie 'Asterix and Obelix On Her Majesty's Service' stuck in my mind heheh ... wondering whether it could make an interesting concept for a prog rock album LOL
Btw I'm just not willing to poke fun at anything here at all, not my intention here or on any sort of forum.

“Hi folks!

This is kind of like being deceased and listening to people speak of you.

To get to the heart of the matter, I don’t want to return to PA in any form of discussion forum. I apologize to all for my last outburst, especially to David (Guldbamsen), who got the brunt of my attack. He didn’t deserve it and I do feel sincerely bad about it. I was treated better at PA than I should have been by David, Andy Webb et al, as I know they made allowances for me having known my personal situation at the time. I used PA as what I assumed was just something to pass the time while I attended to wife’s needs.

What I didn’t realize was how much I learned from so many members there. I always felt as if I was speaking to a prog expert or a music expert as opposed to a prog fan with an opinion, which is rampant at the site I now frequent.

I also really enjoyed Timothy Leary’s photos with a hot cup of coffee and I came to appreciate Dean always pushing me for verify my facts and not lean toward conjecture, and I have assumed the same position with others. Despite the occasional blowup with a few members, I did sincerely like all at PA without reservation. As I said, I was conversing with prog experts, not just prog fans.

Btw, I was threatened with suspension at Ppogressive Ears after one of many told me to take my “Prog Archives mentality” and hit the road. As if I was an ambassador from PA. The anti PA bias is incredible. And I wasn’t going to budge. Ironic, isn’t it?

Ok, so this is it. I would like to thank David, Dean, Andy, Sean Trane. Dark Elf, Dr Wu, Timothy Leary, Holy Moly Steve, Barbu, Emigre80, Raff and all who have made my life a little bit better than it would have been over the last two years.

I hope this letter heals some wounds and sets some things to rights.

Regards, SteveG"

Good letter.

I couldn't really get to know him for a long time, but I do agree strongly that the people here are real music and prog experts.

Myself, I'm no expert.  I'm just a prog fan.  You can tell me by the way I walk.

Sure, but I can only speak for myself. It's something I did with regret and only as a last resort, and only then after considered and level-headed discussion in the AZ with our fellow Admins.

During my time we had a rule that an Admin could not moderate on discussions he was actively involved in (this seldom applies to current Admins as they generally are not as active on the forum as we were back then), this way we could avoid being accused of misusing our authority and could freely partake in forum discussions. This had a secondary effect that we'd usually step away from any disciplinary discussions involving someone who we'd previously had a heated exchange with. So we tried to be as impartial as was humanly possible to be in a small community such as ours.

To actually be banned took a great deal of effort. The quickest way is to make a racist comment as we had (and hopefully still have) a zero tolerance for that behaviour - the moment we start tolerating racism will the day the PA dies in my opinion - I like it here because we have a high-level of acceptance of people regardless of who they are.

So... Usually there would be an official warning sent by PM to all parties involved. I would say that in the majority of cases that would be the end the situation. As Bob would have said, the person would "take a telling" - we generally would not enter into a he-said/she-said argument with the person being warned. If the person stopped doing whatever it was they were doing the matter was over as far as we were concerned.

However, if that warning was not heeded then a temporary suspension was imposed - usually a week or a month depending on how belligerent the miscreant was and the seriousness of his misdemeanor. Contrary to popular belief, we didn't actually hold grudges or anything as petty as that. Some people like to flatter themselves that they were on an Admin's-hit list but if such a list existed I never saw it in the seven years I was an Admin. We'd also not punish someone twice for the same offence, if the second offence was the same as the first then generally they would get the same punishment as before - again, it would take a lot for someone to get progressively longer and longer suspensions.

There are some who were serial offenders - not only was their behaviour disruptive and aggressive, it got progressively worse - once two people (I guess you know of whom I refer) returned after an unprecedented one year ban only to start stirring up trouble all over again. They were given fair warning that such behaviour was not tolerated but they continued (probably for their own amusement) so after, as I have said before, considered and level-headed discussion in the AZ they were given a permaban.

In seven years I only dealt out the permaban-hammer on one occasion - it was I who kicked out Walter - not for his silly belief that everything post 1989 was crap, but for relentlessly attacking every modern-prog loving newbie who joined the site despite being repeatedly warned to stop or be suspended. Again, this was discussed in the AZ and the decision was made that we liked having newbies free to join this site without being harassed much more than we enjoyed laughing at Walter.

I did hand out one temporary suspension to someone who then tracked me down on social media and called me a four-letter word that begins with c and ends with unt. Bemused by this I mentioned the incident in the AZ- the other Admins didn't find it that funny so they permabanned him. Personally I was looking forward to his return so I could rip him a new arsehole, but there you go.

Now - here's a thing - some people who claim to have been permabanned from here actually never were. There is some weird kind of kudos attached with being dealt a life-ban from an internet forum - some may have received a temporary 1-week suspension and chose never to return, and some simply ran away after receiving an official warning. I recall one member asked to be demoted then stated elsewhere that he had been demoted, leaving everyone to infer that the demotion was imposed upon him by us. People on the Internet are strange.

So let's put this into perspective - the actual number of people who have been permabanned from here is a very very small number even when you count all the spam-bots and ratings abusers with multiple accounts. If we just count real people who interacted on the forum for any length of time then it is probably less than 20... 20 out of 56,130 people who have apparently signed up as members over the past 12 years. Even if that is a low-estimate and the real figure is 200 (which it most certainly isn't) that's still a stupidly small percentage that actually shows how much we favour redemption and forgiveness over permanent banning.

I hope that answers your question. Smile

Absolutely not doubting the numbers, but 20 would be just that Wallace character and his many reincarnations, no?? LOL

not quite, though he accounts for maybe a third of that. LOL

Shame he couldn't control himself because he was mostly tolerable and moderately knowledgeable, I chalked him up as a lost cause some time ago after giving him far more second chances than he rightfully deserved.
