Anybody else out there thinking that overall this is actually a surprisingly bad year for prog music, so far?
But then, the bulk of releases will start coming in September . . . .

^ I'd say it's at least on par with last year (probably the past two years, but I'll admit my memory of two years ago is fuzzy) at this point in the year.

I wouldn't say bad as much as somewhat lackluster - with very few exceptions so far. Then again, I haven't listened to all the new releases, especially those (like the new Guapo) that are more to my taste. The really good new stuff (at least as far as I'm concerned) tends to fly under the radar. |

I want to recommend the album by Deadly Orgone Radiation (Weasel Walter / James Sedwards / Alex Ward):
It's a very noisy amalgam of improv / metal / brutal prog. So you'd want to be in the right mood. But it's hitting the spot for me.

^ This is quite wonderful. Definitely stays pretty much full throttle all the way through, which is a nice touch IMO.

So I checked out Alco Frisbass after seeing them mentioned in this thread and I have to say it has been one of the most frustrating experiences of 2015. These guys seem to have 'borrowed' everything warm and jazzy about Caravan and Hatfields and then popped it in the blender with a touch of the mildly avantguarde. Definitely not a difficult album to get into.....yet I, for one, am missing a real drummer. I guess the programming is done very well on the album, and the drums genuinely sound like drums, but there's no groove imo. Everything else about the album I love, but the lack of a carbon-based rhythm conveyor is still a pretty big let-down for me.
Fingers crossed for a sophomore release featuring Torstein Lofthus (elephant9, Shining) on the drums

Though not included on PA, I'd still heartily recommend the newest release by Heroin in Tahiti called Sun & Violence. If any of you people are into a little left-field psych dabblings, then by all means take the plunge.
Here's how they describe the album themselves: This time, Heroin In Tahiti abandon the freaked out approach of the previous release, for an almost prog-infused sequence of psychedelic folk dances, spacey tarantellas,
twangy guitars, black market hymns and Joe Meek-style homages to the sinking of Costa Concordia. |

Not prog but one of my favorite songs and albums of the year so far. A more loose Cage the Elephant is how i've been thinking of them. Great hooks, love the fuzz and distortion, fun jams.

Ghost Rhythms for me, the discovery of the year! I used to be they did not know about! Now I bought all 3 CD album, Why they are not on the PA issue? They also have a separate project "Lady with" he is also very good, it is more progressive. Play practically the same musicians as in "Ghosts Rythm" Edited by ProgCandles - June 24 2015 at 22:23 |

Actually I discover new releases mainly on this website!
![]() My favourites so far (no order): Anekdoten - Until All The Ghosts Are Gone Grand Tour - Heavy On The Beach IO Earth - New World Ciccada - The Finest of Miracles I am not that fond of the new album of Steven Wilson. Not that it is a bad album, but I simply like the previous one "The Raven..." much much more. |
