Subject: 2015 Picks

Last year I made a thread so as to highlight the year's finest releases. Something that came in very handy when we were compiling our lists for PAs AOTY showdown. I personally found a lot of interesting albums through that thread, which is why I am making a new one for 2015.
I've already stumbled over some real beauties, although not as many by artists featured on PA (as of yet).
Pond - Man It Feels Like Space Again (One of the best I've heard this year. These guys are so incredibly infectious.)
Ozric Tentacles - Technicians of the Sacred (I am really digging this far more than what I expected.)
Steve Wilson - Hand.Cannot.Erase. (Yup, this one really grew on me after I saw the live gig in Copenhagen.)
I'm putting Todd Rundgren, Emil Nikolaisen and Lindstrøm's Runddans collaboration in the middle here, because I strongly suspect they'll get added to the PA database in the near future.
Then again there's also John Carpenter's new album Lost Themes and Public Service Broadcasting's The Race For Space - two albums that sound like they fit in here as well (No rush though, the PSIKE guys have a lot on their plate)
Outside of PA:
Viet Cong - s/t (Post Punk with a snarly melody and some real balls to it)
Kamasi Washington - The Epic (Spiritual jazz with a bootfull of zing!)
Panda Bear - Panda Bear meets The Grim Reaper
Django Django - Born Under Saturn (The Beach Boys goes electronic)
The Brian Jonestown Massacre - Musique de film imaginé (Oddball album from the eternal psych wizard of Ozz)
So what are your discoveries? Have you been pleasantly surprised by something (or incredibly annoyed for that matter)? -Any info on this year's releases, interesting or downright explosive, doesn't matter(although I prefer the latter) - this is surely the place to talk about it. As always, one man's sh*te is another man's gold.

New Jaga Jazzist is quite good, but not up to the level of One-Armed Bandit imo.

Btw Pat, did you check out the live album they recorded with the symphony orchestra? It is without a doubt my fave release from Jaga - even the tunes off One-Armed Bandit sound superior to the studio versions imo.

Man this year for prog has been very weak for me - plus 2015 has been a year where i've really dived into a lot of non-PA music like post-punk and shoegaze.
From what i heard from the new Swilson i was disappointed so that isn't on my list but the new Anekdoten, GY!BE, and Arcane have been pretty good.
I gotta start finding some new stuff.

I suspect I'm gonna come to the AOTY showdown empty handed
I only have Beardfish and Ghost Rhythms - Madeleine which is a great album.
Oh and the mighty Dreadnaught has a new EP which is supposed to land at my doorstep anyday now.

Guapo is probably top 3 on the year so far for me, it's continues the evolution of their sound from Black Oni era through History Of Visitation to this one. It's clearly still Guapo, crushingly heavy, distinctive keyboards but Kavus' personality on guitar is more apparent. Personally I think it's as good as anything they've done from 5 Suns onwards and I love all of those.

Don't worry Sagi - we're not even halfway through 2015
If the last years or so have taught me anything it's that come November/December there'll be dozens of albums I'm dying to get my hands on. All I have to do is (hopefully) to visit this thread from time to time *crosses fingers*

Yeah sure why not? I did it myself - the world doesn't stop at the PA borders. Let's just try and make this mostly about prog releases - or at the very least artists who are on the site so as it doesn't get moved to general music discussions

I'm not finding a lot of good stuff this year, prog or otherwise. Mostly listening to 2013 and earlier stuff right now, but so far my picks are:
prog:
Jaga Jazzist - Starfire (fav prog release so far this year)
Beardfish - +$234612 COMFORTZONE
GY!BE - Asunder!!! Sweet and Other Distress?
Toundra - IV
non-prog:
Viet Cong - s/t
The Decemberists - A Terrible World
Kamasi Washington - The Epic
John Carpenter - Lost Themes
Odawas - Black Harmony
Carpenter Brut - Trilogy
Disasterpeace - It Follows
Sannhet - Revisionist
Pond - Man it feels like Space Again
edit1: looks like I need to check out new Guapo and William D. Drake

Well... I was disappointed in Steven Wilsons Hand.Cannot.Erase and Steve Hackett's Wolflight. Happiest so far I am with
Hasse Froberg's Musical Companion - HFMC
Franck Carducci - Torn Apart
Beardfish - +4625-Comfortzone
Marco Ragni - Mother from the Sun
The Tangent - A Spark in the Aether

Horribly behind this year. But some standouts in PA have been: Sannhet- Revisionist Zs- Xe Liturgy- The Ark Work Bjork- Vulnicura
Outside PA: Kendrick Lamar- To Pimp a Butterfly Viet Cong- s/t Kamasi Wahington- The Epic Father John Misty- I Love You, Honeybear Sufjan Steven- Carrie and Lowell
Pleasant surprises: Liturgy's new album was much better than its lead single suggested. The album has it's flaws, but it's probably one of the more inventive things I've heard this decade.
Turnover's Peripheral Vision is a surprisingly literate indie rock album by a pop-punk band. Elements of Cocteau Twins, The Smiths, and the Cure. Not the most original thing on the market, but it was definitely a nice surprise.

How do you feel about http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmXIIL2tmR8" rel="nofollow - Panda Bear btw? I really dig this latest of his with all the abrasive and fluttering electronics.

Yeah, we do have similar tastes in non-prog. (prog too, to a degree). I did have Viet Cong as my avatar for a while. Glad I was able to help bring that band more listeners. I'm really excited to see where they go next.
I do like Person Pitch a good bit (never listened to Tomboy). I definitely want to get his new album but I've been buying a lot of the albums that I streamed last year. I usually get a slew of new releases around my birthday and Christmas. Panda Bear is certainly one I intend to get.

Yeah, that should be interesting to hear. I hope they don't steer away from the current rather trashy post punk sound of theirs. There is however room for a lot of things to happen inside that palette methinks.
I've been following Panda Bear since Tomboy. Is it just me or doesn't he have a kind of Beach Boys surfer quality to him? In fact, I hear this in a lot of other popular artists. Django Django, Fleet Foxes, Animal Collective (big surprise!), Temples and to a lesser extent Grizzly Bear all have that Beach Boys surfer thang going on in one way or another. I'm not complaining btw - I happen to like all of these

I used to get Grizzly Bear, Panda Bear, and Animal Collective confused when I was younger. Definitely some Beach Boys-esque stuff going on in all of them.
I'm really liking the recent post-punk bands. Viet Cong, Iceage, Savages, and Protomartyr, especially.

I dig Iceage as well. They're getting pretty big here in Denmark.
I have still to catch one of their shows though, which irritates me a little. I've certainly had my chance.
It's just not that often I come across modern rock bands from my home country that i actually dig.

That one is sitting on my to buy list.
Truly excellent stuff - and from my own backyard!
Unfortunately, due to the personal slump I have been experiencing for some time now, I haven't heard many of the higher-profile releases of this year. Not particularly interested in Steven Wilson or Steve Hackett, if I have to be perfectly honest, but I'd really like to listen to the new Guapo and the new Upsilon Acrux (to name just two). On the other hand, I am trying my best to keep up with new releases via Progstreaming, and following the various suggestion threads that pop up here on PA.

One interesting question is whether Phideaux finally releases Infernal, or if it'll turn out to be prog's Chinese Democracy.

Just popped by and saw Sannhet's Revisionist on at least a few lists here. Figured I'd mention that they are on the Archives, currently without a single rating. I'm guilty as charged as well, but it looks like they could use some love for that release.

But then, the bulk of releases will start coming in September . . . .
I wouldn't say bad as much as somewhat lackluster - with very few exceptions so far. Then again, I haven't listened to all the new releases, especially those (like the new Guapo) that are more to my taste. The really good new stuff (at least as far as I'm concerned) tends to fly under the radar.

I want to recommend the album by Deadly Orgone Radiation (Weasel Walter / James Sedwards / Alex Ward):
It's a very noisy amalgam of improv / metal / brutal prog. So you'd want to be in the right mood. But it's hitting the spot for me.

So I checked out Alco Frisbass after seeing them mentioned in this thread and I have to say it has been one of the most frustrating experiences of 2015. These guys seem to have 'borrowed' everything warm and jazzy about Caravan and Hatfields and then popped it in the blender with a touch of the mildly avantguarde. Definitely not a difficult album to get into.....yet I, for one, am missing a real drummer. I guess the programming is done very well on the album, and the drums genuinely sound like drums, but there's no groove imo. Everything else about the album I love, but the lack of a carbon-based rhythm conveyor is still a pretty big let-down for me.
Fingers crossed for a sophomore release featuring Torstein Lofthus (elephant9, Shining) on the drums

Though not included on PA, I'd still heartily recommend the newest release by Heroin in Tahiti called Sun & Violence. If any of you people are into a little left-field psych dabblings, then by all means http://boringmachines.bandcamp.com/album/heroin-in-tahiti-sun-and-violence" rel="nofollow - take the plunge .
Here's how they describe the album themselves:
This time, Heroin In Tahiti abandon the freaked out approach of the previous release, for an almost prog-infused sequence of psychedelic folk dances, spacey tarantellas, twangy guitars, black market hymns and Joe Meek-style homages to the sinking of Costa Concordia.

People leaving big lists of names with no description bugs me, so...
Keyboard-heavy instrumental fusion in their usual fantastic vein. More synthy and urban than One-Armed Bandit.
http://music.tangledthoughtsofleaving.com/" rel="nofollow - Tangled Thoughts of Leaving- Yield to Despair
Post-rock, but not of the pretty, melodic, polished variety; rather, it's visceral, raw and dark. Gigantically fuzzed out & heavy-hitting, with jazz influences in the piano and the free style of playing.
http://https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLZQotpncMsxMXbTv1hdainA1A3pm5OG4Q" rel="nofollow - Godspeed You! Black Emperor- Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress
Good but not quite as great as their classic albums, this is effectively one 40-minute track with a long droning section in the middle, no field recordings here. If you like GY!BE you won't be disappointed.
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbXis3k6mVo" rel="nofollow - Pond- Man It Feels Like Space Again
Sibling band of Tame Impala but more genuinely psychedelic and less indie, really fun album with fantastic dancey hooks.
http://https://cuneiformrecords.bandcamp.com/album/x" rel="nofollow - Schnellertollermeier- X
Instrumental avant power trio, raw and natural-sounding, very intense, and very good.
Probably not prog:
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-48u_uWMHY" rel="nofollow - Kendrick Lamar - http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AhXSoKa8xw" rel="nofollow - To Pimp A Butterfly
Yes, it's a best-selling hip-hop album, it's really is as good as people say it is. Prog fans might like that it's effectively a concept album with deep themes, tied together by a monologue revealed in stages; lots of jazz influences in both the compositions & production; and he employs an even wider palette of voices for different characters than Peter Gabriel.
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDSEtWt9u-A" rel="nofollow - Everything Everything- Get To Heaven
These guys wore prog influences openly on their first album, but they're now more like weird indie pop darlings. This is a great melodic, fun album with lots of creativity hiding in & around the big choruses.
The hipster jazz fusion ensemble joins an orchestra here, and they're impeccable as always; I don't think the compositions are quite as strong as the previous album, but they can't really put a foot wrong.
http://https://timbre.bandcamp.com/" rel="nofollow - Timbre- Sun & Moon
Woman plays harp, sings, and writes beautiful songs to suit. This is a double album, the first (Sun) consists of regular songs, the second (Moon) consists of classical compositions for massed choir, chamber groups and otherwise.
http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2sW53Hjo30" rel="nofollow - Courtney Barnett- Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit
Plain-talking Australian indie singer-songwriter, writes simple but punchy songs that are really just background to the clever, down to earth, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. Breath of fresh air.
Entirely quiet, stripped-back, beautiful songs for lo-fi layers of guitars and voice. It's just really nice.

Definitely looking forward to the new Dungen as well as the new Agusa. The latter is an album with only two track on it. I predict some improv psych of the highest quality.
I still think Pond has made the best album up until now. Memorable, easy on the ears, rocking, danceable, funky and last but not least psychedelic. It's not often you come across modern psych records that you can dance to.
Other new acquisitions of mine from the year of our dog 2015 include the new Ghost Rhythms, Godspeed, Jaga, Zs and Tame Impala. They're all very new to me, so I'll wait a bit before I start dissecting them. On first listen though the new Tame Impala seems like a cool take on 80s synth pop....even if the drums and vocals still sound exactly like the first two albums. Again, I feel far more seduced by their sister act Pond.

Upcoming releases that I bet will end up in my AOTY list:
elephant9 - Silver Mountain (This one is a double album featuring Swedish guitarist extraordinnaire Reine Fiske. Release date 21. August)
Zombi - Shape Shift (A return to a more space rocking sound for these two electronic critters. Releases 16th of October)
Steve Moore - Cub (One half of Zombi, Steve has recorded the soundtrack to this upcoming horrormovie. This should be very interesting methinks. Releases on the same date as Shape Shift)
