Well, everybody has a taste.

It happens to me with Jon Anderson.

The odd thing is I like vocals with character that are out of the norm.  There's something about Gabriel's voice that just cuts through me like a knife.  The costuming doesn't really help his case, either, with me.

funny.. that bothers me the least. Well nothing really bothers me about Genesis... it is just that it.. well.. it just exists.. it says nothing.. and the music with very few notable exceptions does nothing to me. Doesn't inspire me to grab an instrument and play.. doesn't inspire me to drink a 5th and beat the sh*t out of someone.. doesn't inspire me to go Octopus on Raff... doesn't inspire me to.. well you get the point. It just is there..  Sleepy

that is what I find so hard to understand.. and why as much as I have tried.. and tried.. and tried yet AGAIN to listen to those albums and see what others get.. I don't.  I suppose it is part of the very special place music has in my life.. note not prog.. but music..  music to me is all about emotions.  Either reflecting my many moods.. or the catalyst for getting me into a mood.

It's funny, Genesis is what made me be a Prog listener.

I had Wakeman, Yes, ELP, Pink Floyd, Tull albums before Genesis, but when I heard Frágil (Peruvian band), playing covers of Genesis, I became an instant fan.

A friend taped some cassettes for me, an it was like magic.

On those days there were no Prog albums in Lima (A dictator called Juan Velazco Alvarado hated Rock which he called "Yankee infiltration" and almost banned Rock, he was out, but another military followed him), but my parents were in USA, so I called them and asked for Trespass, Foxtrot, SEBTP and A Trick of the Tail, they brought me that plus Nursery Cryme, W&W and Seconds Out in old LP format.

I copied those albums in cassette and used them until the tape was crap, after that, Prog became an obsession (Except Trespass which took me a couple years).

I only saw them on video several years later, and the stage act was a plus.

Only felt that emotion when I heard Anglagard for the first time and in a Kansas concert when they played Miracles Out of Nowhere and Closet Chronicles.

One more for KC, but vs Genesis it would have been the same even with the Sunshine Band Big smile

Genesis.

When he rides, my fears subside.
For darkness turns once more to light.
Through the skies, his white horse flies.
To find a land beyond the night.

Genesis for me (still can't vote in polls though).

To be honest I don't know enough King Crimson. What I've heard I respect and often like, but it doesn't touch me in the same way that a lot of Genesis does.

Mind you, saying all of that I keep having to remember that Genesis continued to release things in the late 70's and 80's, and that's rather a different matter.

One could argue that by 'Lizard', Crimson had stopped being progressive but Fripp did not; whereas Genesis long continued as a group rather than a vehicle.  Genesis clearly lost interest in being progressive even before the departure of Hackett although there is some great material albeit thinly spread across their later albums.  Plus Fripp put Crimson on hiatus for a long period.  So, if we judge the two bands in the period 1969-1975 then it should go to Crimson.  In 'Chapter and Verse' Tony Banks mentions how influential 'Court of...' was when they were locked up in their cottage.  However, my heart goes to Genesis (the first major band I saw - 77, Wind and Wuthering).

I really like Genesis, that means, I hear it since 25 years with great pleasure: Gabriel's era, Hackett's and Collin's era. The rest ist poppier, but I can hear it. But King Crimson seems to me a band of a wider horizont and enormous class (and there are some other bands which I consider better than Genesis, even if they are no doubt very good and classic).

But I like more songs from Genesis.

The nail-biting conclusion, what shall it be? There is only one vote left to tie them up. It's all in the hands of fate now. LOL

Nowadays I'm enthusiastic of bands that explore their sensations, feelings and emotions to the deepest without ever losing their edge in experimenting newer ways of expressing their ideas - I don't know KC but unfortunately I never felt Genesis exactly that way or as their fans feel here about their music.

KC is my vote: 54

Genesis from 1970 - 1977 were unstoppable
King Crimson - never even got started for me

A vote for Rael!

although i've loved genesis since forever - i rarely knew anyone who'd heard of them until the commercial radio hits..

its so weird to see them and the other bands referred to as 'giants'
I always thought they were to me - but no one else
