King Crimson.
I was kinda hoping Dream Theater could have met Death in the finals, but this will have to do. |

Hard to describe but for me the weirdness of King Crimson is hard to get, it took me 10-15 years to begin to enjoy King Crimson. Genesis hit me like a hurricane from day one, you can identify the genius in those 5 very early on. They wrote albums that are simply brilliant. KC I think just tried too hard to be eclectic, different and too much experimental stuff. I mean you can do the experimental stuff early on then figure out what you wanna do, but to keep experimenting gets boring after awhile.
Again, my problem with KC is what band are you voting for??? KC of the 70-80-90s?? They had their moments but the album catalog does not meld well together. With Genesis we all split them up as either PG era or post-PG...or prog Genesis or pop Genesis, that is easier to define within their catalog and regardless of which you like the band jumped in with both feet, they knew what they wanted to do and made brilliant albums in each era. Those early albums by Genesis are timeless and the stories, lyrics and the music are genius. The pop-era has simply some great tunes and albums, that is when they began to make money, which I have zero issues with, we all need to make money and a band should too. The public responded and bought the krapp out of their albums in the 80-90s, and that exposed new people to the origins of Genesis. There will never be another Selling England By the Pound...never. Genesis for me.

Well, KC made some mind blowing albums with ITCOTCK and Red, and I quite like In The Wake Of Poseidon, Lizard and Larks' Tongues in Aspic too, and some songs on Thrak, but they are still no match against Genesis...
Trespass, Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, And Then There Were Three and Duke are all brilliant, and A Trick Of The Tail and Wind And Wuthering are quite good too. There are even some enjoyable tracks on the other studio albums, and then I didn't even mention the first three live albums, which are all sensational in their very own way. What a legacy!

I have to say I find it funny how being "experimental" is considered to be a bad thing by fans of a genre called PROGRESSIVE rock. This somewhat lends credibility to my theory that what a lot of prog fans actually want is a bunch of glorified pop songs rather than anything genuinely forward-thinking. |
