Jethro Tull easily. I can't stand Zeppelin those damn plagiarists.

Tull over Zep. I did finally get into Led a few years after their heyday.

There is a difficult choose between Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. In the days of my youth Tull and Zeppelin was a two bedrocks, but Tul still untouchable in my mind. And Zeppelin... Yes, I love them, but Tull is more important for me. Both "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick" I like better than "Led Zeppelin II" or "Physical Graffity". Ian is like my god, hi's a genius composer, and I prefer him as a singer. You say Tull has three genial albums and other their records are bad? What are this three? "Aqualang", "Thick as a Brick", "Passion Play"? Or "War Child", "Minstrel", "Heavy Horses"? Or "This was", "Too Old to Rock and Roll", "Songs from the Wood"? All of them contains great stuff and all still important to rock music. Tull gets my vote. Objectively Tull more intellectual and more elegant than Zeppelin. So, I'm going with Tull.
Apropos, I think both Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull are essentially one person bands: In Jethro Tull this person is Ian, and in Led Zeppelin this is Jimmy. So the comparison is correct.

John Bonham's drumming hero in Great Britain was Barriemore Barlow.

Plus, the LZ frontman sometimes came up with lyrics such as "baby, I've been yearnin', way, way dwon inside, honey", while Ian Anderson always has lines such as "Wallet ever-bulging. Dressed to the left, divulging the wrinkles of his years. Wedding-bell induced fears. Shedding bell-end tears in the pocket of her resistance."
That decides it - I go for JT.

I'm always puzzled by lyrics like that.

Both bands released fabulous albums on their own merits (Tull released more fantastic albums) as Zeppelin only 9 in their time of living.
Heavens, Aqualung and the 4th Album were recorded in the same studio complex at the same time.
Both explored variety, both toured together, even Roots To Branches fits close to the Page / Plant - Unledded album - though of course the Tull classic is all original material. Though P and P really did indulge their rearrangement capabilities.
There's re a couple of great bootlegs from the Berkeley Theatre Ca, 1971 of both Tull and Zep (separate concerts folks) done by the same people (I think, going by the fine audience recordings...)
Both bands. Great stuff.

Where is the 'neither' option. Never been a great fan of either tbh but TAAB is totally brilliant album versus In Through The Out Door which is how I like my LZ ( keyboards!) . Brick it has to be.

Tull.
Always loved Zep but not one of their albums came close to Heavy Horses or Songs From the Wood for me
