Virgil Donati (Planet X, Alan Holdsworth)

Elliott Hoffman (Car Bomb)
Bill Bruford
Gavin Harrison
Carl Palmer
Barrimore Barlow (Tull)
Danny Carey
Piwee Desfray (Myrath, extremely underrated player)
Jeff Eber (Dysrhythmia, once again, highly underrated)

That's okay man - half the music we listen to is 20 to 50 years old!

Moerlen
Ward
Peart
Collins
Cobham

All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I'm a Prog fan; but proggies in general make me laugh - clinging so rigidly to the dogma, protecting what they see as their rules. To write Phil Collins off because of his admittedly pop tendencies, when he is actually one of the finest drummers of the lot is ludicrous; to omit Harry Hughes of Clouds - who actually gave lessons to both Bill Bruford and Carl Palmer is another shocker. All these polls tend to be fanzines, not rational debate at all. And by the way, there is no such thing as the greatest, there is only top quality as a guidej.

agreed

I've always liked Collins a s drummer

Wasn't aware that Palmer (or Bruford for that matter)  had lessons from Harry Hughes. Interesting.

I'm prepared to ignore my disllke for a  band if the drummer impresses me. Always considered Zoltan Csorz to be one of the best although I get bored with TFK very quickly. Their current drummer also impresses me although I do like the last album a little bit compared to those horrible long winded doubles they used to churn outWink

When I listen to a Thomas Pridgen solo on YouTube, the one where he is in a type of
video studio, it doesn't even make me feel good.  It's like he's playing rhythms that are
out of sync with the way the human body is supposed to experience rhythm.

He was on Black Market right - or did he only play on that live release? I can't recall.
