With the exception of "Tales From Topographic Oceans", I find that Jon Anderson's lyrics are only really great if they are not taken literally.

Sometimes Jon Anderson gets away with his absurdist lyrics. Other times, I feel they are a waste of a great voice (and band). However, he's far from being alone. The other day, a boy band suddenly appeared on a TV programme I was watching and started to perform lyrics along the lines of, 'You and I are like a missiles in the sky, we go up, up, up.' Their curiously affected singing style and 'harmonies' were massively inferior to Jon Anderson's, but they are probably making pots of money.

As much I love their music, the one prog band that instantly comes to mind when I hear "bad lyrics"...is ELP.
Man in the street nowhere to sleep No time for nothing no Patek Phillipe Pedal to the metal Blow by Blow You're runnin' with the devil it's touch and go They're leaving you nothing and nowhere to go Just put you in the corner like an old banjo The strings are breakin' but you can't say no You're runnin' with the devil it's touch and go Systematic one man show You're caught up in the middle where the four winds blow No salvation 20 below You're runnin' with the devil it's touch and go All systems go friend or foe It's all dependin' on the dice you throw Come without a warning like a U.F.O. You're runnin' with the devil it's touch and go You see this woman on a T.V. show She's drippin' in diamonds from head to toe They make you believe it's the status quo You're runnin' with the devil it's touch and go All systems go friend or foe It's all dependin' on the dice you throw Come without a warning like a U.F.O. You're runnin' with the devil it's touch and go (And I like that song a lot!

Personally I think the last few Dream Theater albums have been plagued by really awful lyrics. But they're just nowhere near as good as they used to be in general.

^"Tears fall from the shameless Shelter me, guide me to the edge of the water Selfless are the righteous Burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter" I personally don't think these are really bad lyrics.

I honestly tend to focus mostly on intrumentals, they can make me high or most sentive too, never pay attention to lyrics (never could sing along either with my friends except hum the tunes), thus cannot answer the above.

HaHa, that's why I didn't say ALL of their lyrics, but they're were more than enough times on their last two albums where I thought to myself "you can't be serious..."

Lyrical content eh? Apart from Neal Morse's preaching most prog has adequate lyrical content and covers far more topics than typical pop - which is some geezer singing about some girls eyes and heart when he's really just interested in her tits and fanny......or some bint singing about how she's in love now she;s found out the size of his wallet.....
Gangsta rap is about shooting people...and country and western is about snakes with tits....running off with his best friend when he's trying to get the harvest in with a broken tractor......Or am I just being just to sterotypical ??

Strange - all the proggers I know Love Star Trek / Science Fiction....also a good deal of them are fantasy war gamers..and obviously a lot are glued to their PS-II.....However I was just doing a swift premis based on the most likely topic matter for Pop/Ganstarap/Country and western......Mind you I haven't heard a lot of the latter two - can somebody point me at the 32 minute Country & western epic about the siege of stalingrad...I'd love to hear it....

I am quite openminded in terms of listening to other music genres also not phased by anything, I live in Africa and my housemate likes rap, I personally do not like rap however rap has a lot of meaningful lyrical content and I do not mean MTV rap music about gangsters and blink, lyrics don't mean much to me and this goes for all genres, I tend to focus mostly on instrumental this might be the reasom I like prog but not because of the lyrics, instrumentals mean much more to me. All this said certain rap artists even if they might sound a bit harsh they do have a good lyrical contend and NAS is a big example, one of his lyrics as follows: [Chorus] [Chorus] Hey yo its poison, ecstasy, coke You say its love, it is poison Schools where I learned they should be burned, it is poison Physicians prescripting us medicine which is poison Doctors injecting our infants with the poison Religion misoverstood is poison Niggas up in my hood be getting shot giving poison In hospitals, shots rittle the block Little children and elderly women run for their lives Drizzling rain come out the sky every time somebody dies, Must be out my f**king mind, what is this, the hundredth time? Sending flowers to funerals, reading rest in peace You know the usual, death comes in threes Life is short is what some nigga said Not if you measure life by how one lives and what he did Its funny how these black killer companies is making money off us Fast food, cola sodas, skull and bone crosses [Chorus] Sisters up in my hood trying to do good given choices When pregnant drop out of school or have abortions Stop working hoping that they find a man that will support them Up late night on they mothers cordless, thinking a perm or Bleaching cream will make better when they gorgeous White girls tanning, lypo suction Fake titties are implanted, fake lips that's life destruction Light-skin women, bi-racial hateful toward themselves Denying even they blood I don't judge Tiger Woods but I overstand the mental poison That's even worser than drugs [Chorus] Radio and TV poison, white Jesus poison And any thoughts of taking me down is poison Who want beef now, my heat shell annoyed them, plow Never to worry, all the wrong doers got it coming back to em A thousand times over Every dog has its day and everything flips around Even the most greatest nation in the world has it coming back to em Everybody reaps what they sows that's how it goes Innocent lives will be taken, it may get worse but we'll get through it Y'all be strong The China-men built the railroad The Indians saved the Pilgrim And in return the Pilgrim killed em They call it it Thanksgiving, I call your holiday hellday Cause I'm from poverty, neglected by the wealthy Me and my niggas share gifts every day like Christmas Slay bitches and party everyday like this is the last I'm with my heckles connecting and we hitting the lad This is my level, f**k if it get you mad It's all poison, all of my words to enemies it is poison Rappers only talk about ki's, its all poison How could you call yourself emcees you ain't poison Think about the kids you mislead with the poison And any thoughts of taking me down is all poison Who want beef now, my heat shell annoyed them, plow [Bridge] What goes around comes around my nigga And what goes up it must come down my nigga The soldiers found below the ground my nigga Just hold it down we older now my nigga What goes around comes around my nigga And what goes up it must come down my nigga The soldiers found below the ground my nigga Just hold it down we older now my nigga This nigga Ike with the Iverson jersey Light skin with herpes f**kin' sisters in Harlem, Brooklyn and D.C. This is the problem cause he never tell em he got it From letting fags suck him off Rikers Island in nine-three Drives in Benz, hangs in all the parties All the concerts, backstage where the stars be Rocking their shirts in bitches faces like clockwork What's your name, where you from, chain blinging Thinking girls every wheres dumb, taking powder ruining their lives So they could never have babies, and they could never be wives He never used a condom, give him head he got ya Met the wrong bitch and now he dead from the monster AIDs I contemplate, believing in karma Those on top could just break and won't be eating tomorrow I know some bitches who be sleeping on niggas dreams They leave when they nigga blow she the first bitch on her knees Knowing dudes that's neglecting their seeds Instead of taking care of em they spending money on trees I pray for you deadbeat daddies Cause when them kids get grown its too late for you Now you old and you getting sh*tted on Its all scientific, mystic, you know the Earth and the stars Don't hesitate to say you heard it from Nas What is destined shall be George Bush killer til George Bush kills me Much blessings be healthy, remember [Bridge] Read more at http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/56390/#ocYyrZbis0P2cpeL.99 |

Lyrics don't need to make sense for one to relate to them, i.e. The Wizard by Uriah Heep is very emotional to me, beautiful and no I don't believe in Demons and Wizards
