Something not nice, preferably. Altaeria: Although I may not enjoy ELP that much on the whole (there was a time when I counted Trilogy amongst my very favourite albums, and when getting into Prog in a big way this past decade, it was one of my first purchases), if I were to make a list of what I think to be the most important Prog albums, ELP would feature prominently. It is a quintessential Prog band to me. But of course the top 100 is just a popularity list. It's not that represenative of my tastes, that's for sure, nor do I think it a great list when it comes to historical importance. Considering your ratings, you hardly look the ELP fanboy type: EMERSON LAKE & PALMER In The Hot Seat (rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Works Vol. 2(rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Black Moon (rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Emerson Lake & Powell(rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Works Vol. 1 (rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Tarkus(rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Trilogy(rating only) EMERSON LAKE & PALMER Emerson Lake & Palmer(rating only) I also find the début best, and would have expected to see ELP quite highly ranked at one time. Pretty sure it was ranked much higher when I started visiting this site a lot back in 2005. |

Don't cry, dude. I really like Popol Vuh, but none of their albums are on that list. Can are highly lauded, but their albums aren't there either.

As far as I'm concerned, I do like ELP very much, and they have done some incredible songs that I find among my very favourite prog songs. However, somehow they didn't manage to do any single album I would rate 5 stars, they all have many songs I don't really care much for, or even rather despise. I don't care if they are suposed to be pompous or egomaniac or whatever (hey, one of my favourite albums is Myths and Legends of King Arthur, by Rick Wakeman, you can hardly go more pompous than that). But when ELP goes into that, how to say it, kind of carnival groove, I really dislike them. |

You wouldn't alienate yourself from PA if you said you like ABBA. People just don't agree that ELP must somehow occupy a higher place in the top 100. Basically, the top 100 is just a popularity contest and not highly relevant except for those who are new to prog for whom it's a handy reckoner of prog essentials. |

Hey, for what it's worth, this thread motivated me to listen to ELP and I find them quite enjoyable. Tarkus might become a 5 star album by the time I decide to rate it. And contrary to just about everyone else, I like "Jeremy Bender" and "Are You Ready Eddy?". They're fun.

Did you know that if you search "marmite" and "progressive", you find about 2,030,000 results. We should explore and discuss them all...

For me, I really like "Are you Ready Eddy?", haven't really understood all the hate towards that track. Sure enough, it's not prog, but for me a very nice Rock n' Roll piece (without guitar!!!). On the other hand, I really dislike "Jeremy Bender". |

Tarkus though does seem to be an album with a split personality. Partly becuse the band were not all on the same page. I think Greg Lake preferred a more rock n roll approach while Emerson wanted to expand the symphonic side. The album illustrates the internal battle going on but is still a fascinating album either despite or because of it. Jeremey Bender though is a really odd track to me. Not sure why they did it. The other tracks on Side Two are good especially The Only Way which is the most underrated ELP track. A Time And A Place is a full blooded power track and Are You Ready Eddy is a nice affectionate tribute to their sound enigineer and not a bad way to round off the album. Oh and almost forgot Bitches Crystal which allows Emerson to flex his fingers on the piano. On reflection its only JB that brings the album down a notch. Not dissimilar to Benny The Bouncer and BSS perhaps??!

BSS? BTB - wouldn't be out of place on a Chas n Dave CD, KE9 2nd impression is also fairly ropey compared with the first impression's sheer brilliance - Mind u like I've said before BSS - should get five stars - because KE9 FIP1 & 2 is an essential for any serious prog collection......
SEBTP similarly has the equally awful - "More Fool Me"...still a SIX star effort for me though....

In a poll that was done recently 2nd Impression and 3rd Impression proved quite popular, the latter getting more votes than 1st Impression. I voted 3rd Impression because its ELP at their most symphonic. I also love Pirates for similar reasons. KE9 stands up well as a suite and isn't unbalanced. My only reservation is that the studio version is inferior to the live version. 3rd Impression is a monster live. |

I agree, I consider 2rd imp better than the 1st, though KE9 is an outstanding piece in every minute.
