....although if you asked me tomorrow it might be Foxtrot and A Trick Of The Tail Wink

My favorite band of all time - simple as that!  Big smile

Trespass and Duke.
Both amazing and beautiful records.
Also I think the ebst thing about W&W was the album art. It's not the worst album ever, but I'd say Genesis released better stuff before and after that album (Calling all Stations doesn't really counts).

I prefer Duke much more than W&W, for example..

Am I alone here in thinking that they don't have any really bad albums? (maybe with the exception of their very last 2-man Calling all Stations) Actually, Abacab might also be qualified as bad. The only 3-or-more-man Genesis album that is really bad. I even enjoy Invisible Touch and Genesis.

Their best? I'd say Foxtrot, followed by SEBTP, A Trick of the Tail, and And Then There Were Three, for me a masterpiece that needs to be seen under a different light. The cult of Peter Gabriel has cast a bad spell over gems that deserve better.

I liked that Genesis better when they started sounding less like Genesis in Fugazi and beyond... until they lost their own Gabriel.

There  is no Genesis album I think is bad.Even  Calling All Stations has grown on me. It could have been so much more though. It's kinda lacklustre

I should really give Calling all Stations another try.  I barely gave it a chance. Bought it when it came out and tossed it away on the same day.   I was actually expecting Phil to be on it LOL

Somehow I missed the memo.

My fave cd's would be "Trespass" and "And then there were three."

Trespass:

The Trespass album to me is the picture of a band that is still searching for it's voice, still rough in the mix yet contains a very organic sound and vision. At times this albums sounds very close to VDGG and that's not strange since they were both label mates and toured together..

And then there were three:

It took me years to finally acknowledge Collins-era Genesis. What most people don't realize is that his singing has graced almost all of the Genesis albums he he has played on.I was constantly dissing all the post Gabriel and Hackett albums till one day a friend made a copy of Wind and Wuthering. After that I was hooked.Ane then there were three still has the prog compositions and very Hackett-esque guitar courtesy of Mike R.A very upbeat album.

Trouser Press years back made the brilliant observation that Genesis didn't lose its edge after Gabriel left but after Hackett left.Even though I love Duke I think it's pretty fair to say that Trouser Press in my op' was close to the mark in their observation.

You know this is actually an easy one for me just because I have so much love for what it's done for the Neo prog genre. Basically started the Neo wave. Anyway, A TRICK OF THE TAIL. Hands down.

I know people compare the Fish years Marillion with Genesis a lot, but I think the similarities are not that strong!! Nice o e DEAN.

The similarities are there imo including Fish's voice which sounds a lot like Peter Gabriel and the way the songs are stretched out with keyboard and guitar solos. The drumming style is different though and Rothery's guitar work sounds more like Brian May than Steve Hackett. Mark Kelly does sound a little like Tony Banks at times but who has the stronger influence on the Marillion sound? The early seventies Genesis sound or mid seventies Art Rock music of bands such as Queen and David Bowie?

You know at first i didn't think Fish sounded at all like Gabreil, but now I definately detect a similarity when Fish sings softly into the note. You are right on that one. Mark Kelly sounding like Banks? Na. Don't agree there, but I do find your Rothery/May comparison with Hackett. Please tell me what Queen albums where May sounds like Rothery? I'm very curious on that one ;) anyway. Still a great album though. Hey! Can I change my vote to script!!!? Just kidding.
Also one last thing, did you feel that the guitar was massively scaled back in the album Wind and Wurthering? I think it was.

Not necessarily massively, as the guitar wasn't very prominent on Trick either, but it's noticeable. On one hand, this contributes to the album's own unique sound. On the other, maybe I wouldn't be as bored if there were more guitar.

Selling England... But Wind and Wuthering deserves a special mention for (1) Eleventh Earl of Mar, whose proud martial beat just shouts confidence (as the group proved on the prior Trick of the Tail that it could succeed without Gabriel), and (2) One for the Vine with it exhilarating instrumental break, which I'll never tire of.

they started weeding out Hackett by each growing year....and then in 1978 their where 3, which is not a bad album too. Nice precursor to DUKE. You could really here and see what sound direction Genesis wanted to take. Enter POPI PHIL!!! Lol
