You can't compare Dream Theater with anyone because they are the bestest of all genres and all the rest of the bands are clones.

Dream Theater have both top spots in the prog metal chart. And people complain about the lack of appreciation for them here?

Ok. Why the f**k do people hate on Dream Theater so much? I really don't get it. Dream Theater are thier own unique, creative force. I think other people and bands alike are jealous of the virtuoso talent |

To the OP:
Do yourself a favour and dismiss anything to do with "greatest", "best", "top" and "lists". I stopped looking at the top 100 a couple of years ago, and was actually only reminded of it here recently because of some punk kid in Mexico trying to champion some Yes tribute albums. The more music you stumble across, the harder and more abstract these things tend to get. Do you love the exact same kind of music now as you did back in high school? Does some music work better in the morning and is therefore only really great at that time of day? I used to adore Boney M and now I don't - does that mean that I've committed treason against my own true self? All this non-sense is of course beside the point, but merely there to show you guys that I can link words together to form sentences of sub par quality - and maybe illustrate that the notion of a single list that's supposed to equate some kind of factual merit hierarchy, is utopian and furthermore stupid as hell. Why? Because people's tastes change and listening habits change as well. What may have seemed like noise a few years ago, may now hit you right in the gizzard. Conversely, an album like Close to the Edge may have started out as a real humdinger destined to reside alone at the top of tops for eternity - only you find yourself rather bored by it, after you suddenly discovered Krautrock... Like Dean mentioned, the list is essentially Just For Fun.

Before Dream Theater there was only Proto Dream Theater, and after Dream
Theater, merely Post Dream Theater and Dream Theater Related. DT is
the pivotal point of the time-space continuum (Australian Aboriginals refer to it as the DreamTime, and in ancient times prophesied the coming of the Falling Angel of Cheese See THIS and THIS).
Really there are only two major Prog eras: BDT (before Dream Theater) and ADT (Anno Dream Theater) with some subsets which entail changing personnel such as Anno Dominici (In the Year of our Dream, 1 AD) which is also referred to as BlB (Before La Brie). |

Oh yes the time before the Brie... I remember it fondly. We literally submersed ourselves in cheddar and Roqueforts for days on end...

Yes, but collectively Prog Metal is one of the lowest rated genres on the site. Go ahead, check it out. Also, check this out: http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=&salbumtypes=1&syears=&scountries=&sminratings=1500&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=100&x=0&y=0#list That's right, they are the lowest rated band with over 1500 votes. This is why DT fans harp on the fact that they are hated around here - because they have to work the hardest to get anywhere on the PA charts. The fans have to overcome all the haters to get them anywhere on the charts. |

You know, you do an awful lot of carping about Dream Theater's place in the chart for someone who only rates their albums. A review carries ten times the weight of a rating only. DREAM THEATER Dream Theater - Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour Live with the Octavarium Orchestra(rating only) DREAM THEATER Chaos In Motion 2007/2008(rating only) DREAM THEATER Live at Budokan(rating only) DREAM THEATER When Dream And Day Reunite [Official Bootleg](rating only) DREAM THEATER Metropolis 2000: Scenes From New York(rating only) DREAM THEATER Live at The Marquee(rating only) DREAM THEATER Once In A Livetime(rating only) DREAM THEATER Score: 20th Anniversary World Tour Live with the Octavarium Orchestra(rating only) DREAM THEATER Live at Budokan(rating only) DREAM THEATER Live Scenes From New York(rating only) DREAM THEATER Train Of Thought(rating only) DREAM THEATER Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (rating only) DREAM THEATER Octavarium(rating only) DREAM THEATER Systematic Chaos(rating only) DREAM THEATER Black Clouds & Silver Linings(rating only) DREAM THEATER Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From A Memory | review DREAM THEATER Falling Into Infinity(rating only) DREAM THEATER Awake(rating only) DREAM THEATER Images And Words | review DREAM THEATER When Dream And Day Unite (rating only) |

Geoff, you have to take into account the possibility that different people have different understanding of the words "low" and "lowest". C'mon, the 4.2-4.3 range isn't that bad. And again, you are taking the list too seriously. The math fails the list (no offense to the authors of the idea for this list).

Highest rating is 4.42. http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=32&syears=&scountries=&sminratings=0&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=100&x=55&y=8#list Of course, it only has 32 ratings... Edited by dtguitarfan - October 04 2012 at 17:19 |

I could go for some dustsucker now.... mmmmm such a good album. And I don't know where you're getting that whole lowest rated thing. They have "low" ratings, just like you said, because they have over 1500 votes. But with weighting, Images & Word's 4.29 will DESTROY Dustsucker on every list. So with many of the "high" rated subgenres, they have very ephemeral scores. If I were to rate Dustsucker 1 star, the rating would plummet. If I would rate I&W 1 star (which I obviously won't given my 2000+ word 5 star review), the rating wouldn't change.

Krautrock, Neo-Prog, Progressive Electronic, Zeuhl, Post/Math Rock, Indo/Raga, Exp/Post Metal are all rated lower than Progressive Metal in the Top-100 chart. Seven qualifying genres are "rated" lower than Progressive Metal, if the 19 subgenres were represented equally in the chart each would have 5 albums - Prog Metal has 6 while Neo Prog has 2, (hell, even Zeuhl beats Neo Prog) and Post Rock has none, so there is no way that Prog Metal can whine about being one of the lowest rated genres on this site.
Dream Theatre have TWO albums in the chart - Krautrock has none - an entire effing genre of some of the most important music in European Prog isn't even represented in the Top 100, Progressive Electronic has ONE album and that's Tangerine Dream (nice name) who now represents the whole of the of the German contribution to Progressive Rock over the past 45 years by one flippin' album. Like Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree also have TWO albums in the chart, and they rank lower than Dream Thehater according to the "haters" around here because the highest they can achieve is #93 to DT's #44 ... I don't see anyone carping on about how badly Steven Wilson and Porcupine Tree are treated around here.
Someone has to be the lowest rated band with 1500 votes, being beaten by the top 5 Prog bands OF ALL TIME is nothing to be angry or upset about - you have to lower the number to 1400 to even see Rush make an appearance, 1300 and Porcupine Tree appear, you have to lower it to 1200 to see Camel join the ranks, no new additions for 1100, at 1000 we finally see Marillion. So there you are ... of the Top Ten most "popular" Prog artists of all time Dream Theater "rank" at #6 above Rush, PT, Camel and Marillion - with multimillion selling artists like Mike Oldfiled, Peter Gabriel and ELP and critically aclaimed artists such as Van der Graff Generator or Gentle Giant not even making a showing. Dream Theatre's achievements and placings on the PA are something to be PROUD of, not something to cry about. Of the modern era bands Dream Theatre are doing very well - better than PT and far better than Radiohead, Sigur Ros or The Mars Volta (all of whom sell more albums than DT).
The ONLY DT fan that harps on about it is you. So stop complaining and start celebrating.
