Well Camel and KC are both wonderful bands. This is a tough one. In my opinion however, King Crimson is the more enjoyable band.

I really wanted to vote Camel, but I love '80s Crimson way too much.

seriously?  where's the contest?  never an example can beat a definition. kc is in one of the definitions of prog itself. this poll is way too out of place.

they don't fit my definition fully. Not the most melodic band going around

Not even ITCOTCK?  Because that is pretty much the basis for a whole lot of symph prog.

Love both bands equally.
With magic, you can turn a frog into a prince.
With science, you can turn a frog into a Ph.D. and you still have the frog you started with.

I rate camel the better band because they had some great compositions. Quality prog. 70s Crimson were not composers after Sinfield left mainly, just experimenters, but they did write some nice slow tracks. Not sure how experimenting comes close to composing honestly. The best tracks from the Wetton era are Nightwatchman, Book of Saturday and Exiles imo. All slow songs. Starless is cool although I don't think it's half as good as some think. As for upbeat stuff, Crimson didn't have a composing idea really. A cool riff here and there but overall a solid band but many better at that time imo

symph prog is very limited though.

symph prog is limited? compared to ....what?  to king crimson maybe! crimson has some symphonic arrangements, but their not a symphnic prog band. they're " super-progressive prog " lol, that's like the very essence of progressive rock what im talking about.

but  there is this thing on my mind now: you say symph prog is limited......then what is illuminating, if symph is limited?

Slow mellotron songs are limited, once you record a couple they start sounding similar Wink
I much prefer prog bands who compose really good upbeat songs as well as slow songs using their jazz and classical influences. I don't want to hear a song with 5 minutes of wind chime eg. Larks 1.  What's so good about it? Waste of album space when something great could have been included but Crimson were capable of upbeat greatness with Wetton and without SInfield imo  Big smile
Give me Raindances and Moonmadness anyday of the week over Crimson King, Islands, Starless and even Red and Larks Cool

Red and Larks are pretty good, but Moonmadness and Raindances are better Smile

The critic in me acknowledges that King Crimson should win this poll, but the one I listen to more, like a secret guilty pleasure, is Camel. I feel more of an emotional connection to Camel, and I find the music to be more evocative. Crimson often leaves me cold, although "Starless" is one of my favorite prog songs ever.

I like them both, it's just that I prefer KC during their first years, and Camel since their first album!

Easily KC. Camel are hard to swallow. KC are much more fun ... and archetypal ... and dirty-visceral ... and they can be pure-visceral. Camel don't seem to be very open about it (to me at least.)
