I love King Crimson, but they aren't my favorite band. Where do I vote?

OK. I consider myself a fan of King Crimson, but they aren't my very favourite band, so I guess I'm voting for ItCotCK on this one.

Same for me as above so not sure whether I'm voting in the right poll. Anyway it's ITCOTCK for me although Red is not far behind. If you include Larks, then you have their three best albums imo.

I'm sorry. That got far more heated (on my part) than I intended. My bad.

In consistency and power? Well both are subjective.
By "power" i'm talking about it's emotional aspect. How it makes me feel and such. Fallen Angel, Starless, and even Providence posses these characters that seem to strike a certain chord with me. They just make me feel good. Obviously it's a personal situation.

I don't like Talk To the Wind, the title track is only fairly good (around 3.5*). Moonchild is growing on me seeing i've never really listened to it before. Leaving Epitaph and Schizoid Man, the latter being worthy of the classic title.

Well if it's subjective then you cannot argue with my initial point. Red can also be described as overrated. Now that was a pointless discussion.

About your so called argument, i must agree it is subjective, only Horizons didn't think Red was overrated, and i don't too.

Most people don't. I don't particularly care either way. I don't use the overrated term anyway.

Don't you have an album that you think is overrated?

I don' think  so. But anyway i do not think that Red is overrated. I just do not like it as much as the majority. Why does that make Red overrated?

It doesn't. I feel when an album is highly regarded and i dislike it completely, then it is overrated. Anyway it is subjective like we agreed before.

Red gets my vote.

ITCOTCK is an excellent debut, though.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Yep.  I would say that overrated is not a good term to use for cases when it's merely a subjective value judgement.

I'm fine with the word overrated, but it does depend upon the context.  It should be used in a more objective manner and be more specific than general.  For instance, one could make a case for a piece of music being overrated within a framework of analysis/ according to certain criteria.  For example, if one person says that he/ she is giving an album five stars because it deserves it as the first piece of music of its kind, but there was an earlier album that ploughed the same musical territory, then one could say that it was overrated.  Or someone praises a piece of music for its originality and vision, and yet that piece was lifted from another composer, then one could say that the person has overrated it.  It generally works better when talking about individuals misconceptions when judging a work rather than pretty nebulous groups of people.  If it's a common misconception that tends to put a work on too high a pedestal, then that can work for saying that groups overrate something.

Saying that people overrate or underrate something when it's just because one does not have the same enjoyment is misguided, and can come across as very arrogant.  I have used the word for shock value on occasion when I know that it's just a subjective value judgement, but sometimes I have seen reviews that indicate to me that they are under or overrating music due to a lack of knowledge about the artistic "genre" and the history of the work, and sometimes because I've thought that they are not knowledgeable enough about composition and musicianship or technicality generally if talking outside music....

EDIT: Back on topic.  I chose Red.  Neither are my favourite KC albums though.

In the Court of the Crimson King over Red. The title song and "21st Century Schizoid Man" are two of my favorites. But they are two starkly different albums, and I have to be in a certain mood to hear either.

By the way, both albums are sadly underrated or ridiculously overrated, depending on whom you reference.
