Never been a Pertucci solo fan. I like his riffs, his solos are shred-lite.

Hackett's Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is my fave in prog.

I think Hackett's Firth of Fifth is the greatest prog guitar solo ever as it is so perfectly and exclusively a prog guitar solo---

I saw Mike Oldfield few times in early 80's, with Moerlen Bros and Maggie Reilly. Fantastic gigs, I must say! Oldfield is one of the greatest guitar players, he has so unique, own style. And Pavlov's Dog, you're absolutely right! I think it's Pampered Menial time, right now Smile

Some choice electric guitar favorites:

1. Steve Howe - Sound Chaser (Yes - Relayer)
2. Steve Hackett - Fly on the Windshield (Genesis - LLDOB) [There is a great version on his DVD, "Once Above a Time"...)
3. John Petrucci - Lies (Dream Theater - Awake)
4. Dave Bainbridge - Veil of Gossamer (Veil of Gossamer) [Electric guitar playing on other songs on that album also]
5. David Gilmore - Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd - The Wall)

Some choice acoustic guitar favorites:

1. Steve Hackett - Horizon's (Genesis - Foxtrot)
2. Neal Morse - Chatauqua (Spock's Beard - Beware of Darkness)
3. Phil Keaggy  [any acoustic guitar playing by him...]
4. Steve Howe - Turn of the Century (Yes - Going for the One)

These are just "choice favorites" that come to mind at this moment...

It seems prog is kind of spoiled with guitar solos
A couple of my favorites are;
-Any Jeff Beck solo (saw him live....still in awe...)
-David Gilmour on "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Echoes"
-Robert Fripp on "Starless" 
-Gary Green on "Peel the Paint"
-Syd Barrett on "King Bee" (I'm serious)
and...Les Paul on "Chicken Reel" 
Hey, he was progressive for his time!
He turned into a hoover!

I think you are confusing "Reasons for Waiting" with "We Used To Know" as RfW does not have a guitar solo at all...it's all acoustic and there isn't even an acoustic guitar solo. "We Used To Know" however does have one of the greatest guitar solos in modern rock/prog. Martin Barre is soooooo underrated.

Another of my all time great solos is by Jan Akkerman in the piece called "Tommy" from "Eruption" on "Moving Waves".

I have a rough ranking.
 
1. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
2. Dream Theater - Hollow Years Live at Budokan
3. Pain of Salvation - Second Love
can't remember the rest but there are more prog metal guitar solo-fests going on in my head.

Intermediate listeners start preferring the bass.

The guitar solos of Roman Bunka at the end of "Heartbeat" on his first solo album. Also his guitar solos in "Lost Scooters"and "Sulzheim Swinging" on the Live album of Aera. And his guitar solo in U-Bahn from Embryo's album "Zack Glpck". And many more Roman Bunka solos. A truly extraordinary guitar player.

IQ's Mike Holmes is responsible for some good 'uns too - not particularly long or 'noodly' solos, I suppose, but exquisite nonetheless. The ending (last 2 minutes) of 'The Magic Roundabout' from 'The Wake' (particuarly some of the live versions of it) always sends a tingle down my spine, and 'Capricorn' off 'Subterranea' is another track that has a beautifully expressive solo of his in it.

Not sure if this counts as a "solo" in the traditional sense, but Robert Fripp's two-note solo-type-thing from "Starless" strikes me as absolutely perfect.  The tricky time signature, the huge crescendo, the way the bass and drums slowly join as piece progresses...it's all just positively stunning.
 
A close second for me is "Oasis" by Enchant.

Absolutely agree here!
 
John Mitchell does a good version of it too in many of his appearances with John Wetton's solo band. There isn't a decent quality vid of 'Starless" featuring him on youtube, but have a listen to his solo in the middle of UK's old classic 'In The Dead Of Night" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGElIaAcz2s.
 
John Mitchell is a very underrated guitarist imho.
