Hey everyone, so I wanted to know what your favorite guitar solo in prog (all sub-genres) is or favorite solos in multiple songs.
One solo that I heard a few months ago really blew my mind. It's from the prog group Frost and the song is Black Light Machine.

Anything Allan Holdsworth has ever done.
Any Fripp solo up to and including Beat.

Off the top of my head I would say reasons for waiting - jethro tull, firth of firth - genesis, starship trooper - yes, reason for it all - kayak, starless - king crimson, ommadawn (whole album) - mike oldfield, hergest ridge - mike oldfield. Actually Oldfield is my favourite guitar player, he's done loads of good stuff! That's just a start.

This thread made me think of something odd. I got into prog a couple years ago because of the amazing guitar work of Dream Theater. Now out of every instrument, I pay the least attention to guitar. I even pay more attention to bass than guitar. Even odder considering I'm a guitar player.

It would be preferable if you can narrow it down to one, but myself included that's extremely hard. So pick a few of your favorites then...

Yeah I would agree, I love bass so much now. Petrucci's wizardly guitar solos were one of the things that introduced me to prog now. Yeah I mean I still love guitar a lot, but I really like listening for bass, love keyboard solos too, and of course drumming.

One of my favorites (out of way too many to count) is Fripp in Sartori in Tangier.
I am starting to appreciate Hackett's Dancing With a Moonlight Knight solo over Firth of Fifth.
Yeah, anything by Holdsworth.

Every Day, Firth of Fifth - Steve Hackett
Lunar Sea, Ice, Stationary Traveller - Andy Latimer
Jigsaw, Easter - Steve Rothery
There are many other brilliant ones by those artists and also people like Dave Gilmour, Dave Bainbridge, Andy Powell/Ted Turner and Brian Josh, but those seven stand out for me.

Jethro Tull - We Used To Know. It has been one of my favourite guitar solos of all time. Maybe not so prog, but very beautiful and full of emotion.

Never been a Pertucci solo fan. I like his riffs, his solos are shred-lite.
Hackett's Dancing with the Moonlit Knight is my fave in prog.
Zappa's Inca Roads
Devin Townsend on Deep Peace
Alex Lifeson on Limelight and Strangiato

I saw Mike Oldfield few times in early 80's, with Moerlen Bros and Maggie Reilly. Fantastic gigs, I must say! Oldfield is one of the greatest guitar players, he has so unique, own style. And Pavlov's Dog, you're absolutely right! I think it's Pampered Menial time, right now

Some choice electric guitar favorites:
1. Steve Howe - Sound Chaser (Yes - Relayer)
2. Steve Hackett - Fly on the Windshield (Genesis - LLDOB) [There is a great version on his DVD, "Once Above a Time"...)
3. John Petrucci - Lies (Dream Theater - Awake)
4. Dave Bainbridge - Veil of Gossamer (Veil of Gossamer) [Electric guitar playing on other songs on that album also]
5. David Gilmore - Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd - The Wall)
3. Phil Keaggy [any acoustic guitar playing by him...]
4. Steve Howe - Turn of the Century (Yes - Going for the One)
These are just "choice favorites" that come to mind at this moment...

It seems prog is kind of spoiled with guitar solos
A couple of my favorites are;
-Any Jeff Beck solo (saw him live....still in awe...)
-David Gilmour on "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" and "Echoes"
-Robert Fripp on "Starless"
-Gary Green on "Peel the Paint"
-Syd Barrett on "King Bee" (I'm serious)
and...Les Paul on "Chicken Reel"
Hey, he was progressive for his time!

I think you are confusing "Reasons for Waiting" with "We Used To Know" as RfW does not have a guitar solo at all...it's all acoustic and there isn't even an acoustic guitar solo. "We Used To Know" however does have one of the greatest guitar solos in modern rock/prog. Martin Barre is soooooo underrated.
Another of my all time great solos is by Jan Akkerman in the piece called "Tommy" from "Eruption" on "Moving Waves".
Spine tingling.

I have a rough ranking.
1. Riverside - Second Life Syndrome
2. Dream Theater - Hollow Years Live at Budokan
3. Pain of Salvation - Second Love
can't remember the rest but there are more prog metal guitar solo-fests going on in my head.

The new listeners always go for Led Zeppelin's guitar.
Intermediate listeners start preferring the bass.
Advanced audio fans spend more time listen to drums and percussion than any other instrument.
Same for prog.

The guitar solos of Roman Bunka at the end of "Heartbeat" on his first solo album. Also his guitar solos in "Lost Scooters"and "Sulzheim Swinging" on the Live album of Aera. And his guitar solo in U-Bahn from Embryo's album "Zack Glpck". And many more Roman Bunka solos. A truly extraordinary guitar player.

IQ's Mike Holmes is responsible for some good 'uns too - not particularly long or 'noodly' solos, I suppose, but exquisite nonetheless. The ending (last 2 minutes) of 'The Magic Roundabout' from 'The Wake' (particuarly some of the live versions of it) always sends a tingle down my spine, and 'Capricorn' off 'Subterranea' is another track that has a beautifully expressive solo of his in it.

Not sure if this counts as a "solo" in the traditional sense, but Robert Fripp's two-note solo-type-thing from "Starless" strikes me as absolutely perfect. The tricky time signature, the huge crescendo, the way the bass and drums slowly join as piece progresses...it's all just positively stunning.
A close second for me is "Oasis" by Enchant.

Absolutely agree here!
John Mitchell does a good version of it too in many of his appearances with John Wetton's solo band. There isn't a decent quality vid of 'Starless" featuring him on youtube, but have a listen to his solo in the middle of UK's old classic 'In The Dead Of Night" here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGElIaAcz2s" rel="nofollow - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGElIaAcz2s .
John Mitchell is a very underrated guitarist imho.

Thanks for that one! I was going back & forth on which Fripp solo to pick, but that is my favorite single one for its pure, frenetic energy!
I actually did this one live with one of my bands ("Casual Crowbar," a Spinal Tap cover band)! I didn't get close to Fripp's solo, but I also sang the lead, and it was a GREAT song to do live!!

I haven't heard Veil of Gossamer yet, but it's on my list.
I suppose I should be ashamed of myself for not listening to it yet, because, as a guitar player, I should probably listen to the solo album from one of the best guitar players in the world.
Is it on Itunes, so I can immediately put it on my MP3 player and listen to it backstage while I'm acting in Twelfth Night this weekend?

Oh, can't believe I forgot to mention Greg Massi's (maudlin of the Well) sublime solo on "Another Excerpt: Keep Light Near You, Even When Dying." He's another guitarist who, like Dave Bainbridge, is one of the best in the business but gets almost no attention paid to him.

Sorry, I don't "do" ITunes. I got the CD from Amazon.com - bought it "new" from the "cheap list" (not Amazon directly). It came in less than three days. Worth having the CD to read the liner notes...
